I I I APPRECIATIO WHAT IS A TEACHER? To a child thrust into a strange world, a good teacher is the best thing that can possibly happen . . . They are invincible , indispensable , infallible, and very nearly inexhaustible . . . Most of all, a teacher is somebody who likes somebody else's children - and still has enough strength left to go to the PTA meeting. Teachers get the good and the bad, and through some mysterious magic power are expected to turn out yearly a group of well-behaved, educated children - ready for the next grade . i in DON BURNES A teacher must be prepared for anything. There are more emergencies in the classroom than in the hospi- tal, . . . more puppy-love heartbreaks at the water fountain than are to be found on T. V. She must know everything, because she will be asked everything, but she most of all must teach school. IEANETTE HARDIN MELBA WATSON Teachers have more bosses than anybody else . Few others put up with so much for so little , but few others have that vast , personal satisfaction of looking at the long row of marching students in the past and in the future and of knowing they have helped direct the foot- steps of those marchers into right paths.
