TOMORROW S EDUCATION FOR TOMORROW'S WORLD Governor John Connally's address highlighted the dedication ceremony on September 3, 1965 at the new Ter- rell Junior-Senior High School. He commended two major educational firms and the Terrell School Board in his address on education for initiating an experimental program which he said would provide tomorrow's edu- cation for tomorrow's world. Here in Terrell, Texas, the governor said, begins an experiment that opens a window to the future through the combined efforts of Encyclopaedia Britannica Films and Bell 8: Howell Co. The two companies originated the concept of Project Discovery and are providing S600,000 worth of the latest audio-visual equipment for the Terrell district. A xff' gg Fx Ngtw., U: Masons Level Cornerstone Approximately 1500 persons converged on the Terrell Junior -Senior High building site af- ter 70070 completion, March 15, 1965, for the leveling of the cornerstone. J. Carroll Hinsley explained that the ceremony was handed down from the masons of England who always leveled the cornerstone as the first step in construction. The leveling of the stone determines the direc tion and trueness of the structure. The students at Terrell High took advantage of the occasion to stage a money-raising project to provide carpeting for the auditorium and administrative areas in the new structure. Rustay, Martin Cgl Vale of Houston, Texas, is the architectural firm which designed the 1 114 million dollar building containing 128, 000 square feet. The school, designed for 1200 students with an anticipated increase to 1800 students, is completely climate controlled on a year-round basis. The academic and vocational areas, as well as the gymnasium, auditorium, cafeteria, and administrative areas are all located in one building. WHAT IS HIGH SCHOOL? Research teams from East Texas State University and Ohio State University are studying activities within and out- side the classrooms of the entire Terrell School System: Where every room is provided with light and temperature con- trol for ideal study. Where every teacher has automatic mo- tion picture and filmstrip projection equipment. Where every building has a complete library of films and filmstrips to vi- talize each unit in the curriculum. Where films are used, not as supplementary, but as basic materials of instruction. Where every child has a front seat to learning. The general purpose of the Ohio State Innovation Study is to see how a new idea develops and is carried out. Mr. Owens, who received his B. A. in Economics from Fordham University in New York City and his M. A. in Education from Ohio State University, interviews teachers to obtain their views on this new discovery and keeps records of the films. He then relates this information to Ohio State University. Mr. Tom Uwens s, X Z Board of Education MR. GRADY HE TER SUPERINTENDENT We hope you, the first graduating class of our new High School, will leave these halls with the same tenacity of purpose and the will to overcome all obstacles in life, that you have shown in overcoming the problems we have en- countered in getting adjusted to moving into this new building. Giving up old customs and traditions isn't an easy task, but you will find the outside world is also a constantly changing and challenging way of life. You have been schooled well. I wish you all success in your future life. You underclassmen, may you live and cn- joy this new school and take full advantage of the purposes for which it was provided. Build strong, worthwhile traditions for future classes to live by. ADMINIS TRA TION E MR. HARVEY CRI TTENDEN 5 ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL ' MR. DAN 0. But in the students' life, sports mean long hours of tiresome practice, high hopes and sometimes the lonely feeling of defeat as well as victory. Athletics takes on a broader aspect than merely win- ning games or cheering the team. It has a deeper and more significant importance to the spirit and life of a school. Qualities of sportsmanship, determination, loyalty, and initiative evolve from athletics that are building factors of strong character and sound conviction. Individuals with these qualities become stars not only among their friends, but also stars in society, in Amer- ica, and in the world. Included in the many branches of the athletic depart- ment are football, basketball, baseball, track, golf, and tennis. Terrell High is proud of its fine sports de- partment, proud of its victories and proud of the star athletes if produces. The fighting Tigers started off the season with a heartbreaking loss to a speedy Greenville team. Games were lost, tied and won, but the season was ended in great team effort as they beat Lancaster. J ew Generatlon... 6 Each new generation requires more and more electric- ity. To meet these increasing needs Texas Power Sz. Light Company is constantly planning and making improve- ments and additions to its facilities for producing and supplying electric power. For example TPSLL recently completed a new 240 O00- kilowatt generating unit at its Trinidad Steam Electric Station in Henderson County. A new unit at the Stryker Creek Steam Electric Station, in East Texas, will add 500 OOO kilowatts in 1966 to meet customer needs. An additional new unit is also under construction at the Valley Steam Electric Station in North Texas. TPSLL invested about S55 million in new and improved facilities in 1964. Approximately S100 million more will be spent for construction of new generating units and other facilities during the 1965-66 period. You can be sure that TPSLL and the other investor- owned electric companies will continue . . . through use of private capital . . . to provide ample low-cost, dependable electric service in the years ahead. 4, . As the school year draws to a close, the seniors be- gin looking ahead to future years, but memories of the past are not pushed aside, when phrases such as Re- member how we used to . . . occur in conversations, the 1965-66 school year at Terrell High School will be relived many times. Glancing back over the year we realize that it would be impossible to recall all the memories which made this year a great one, but here are a few. Could you have imagined this year without ----- senior rings . . . films . . . bus trips . . . games, victories, and de- feats .... that dynamic duo--Batman and Robin, the boy wonder . . . mud . . . 3:30 trips to Stouts . . . Mrs. Murray's warm smile that brightened the office . . . sack lunches ..... workmen and the finishing touches? . . . Coach Drennan and his red sweater . . . confusion in the chemistry lab . . . the Tiger on the gym dressingroom door andwhy??. . .Grendel. . . and Mrs. R.'a never failing to say, You kids get off the gym floor, These are some of the outstanding events one remembers as he recalls his grand senior year. GRADUATION OBSERVATION These eagerhands, these dreaming hands-- Can they be the same scheming hands That once invaded cookie jars Or snitched the keys to family cars? That once belabored anagrams To keep from cramming for exams? f These noble hands, these fearless hands-- Who'd ever dream these peerless hands, Now proudly clutching parch- ment rolls. Once burrowed deep, like blanket moles, Pretending sudden predawn pains To keep from harvesting these gains? --EDITH POWELL WORTMAN 23l' bex 1 dual! W ww Xvd I . , A NWT!!
