This year's track and field team was one of the best in a number of years. They nosed out Kaufman in the District Meet which was held at Greenville. About fifteen boys qualified to participate at the Regional Meet held at Kilgore. Then two boys, Lavon Cox and Blain Duncan qualified to go to the State Meet held at Austin. This was Lavon's second straight year to qualify in the broad jump, and Blain's first time to qualify. His qualification was in the discus. They both have another year. They went to the State Meet and both placed ninth in their respective divisions. Considering the number of boys that participated this was a very high place to attain. There were only two Seniors on the team and these were Jerry Hamm and Royce Mull who did most of the distant running. So next year should bring a great track team. One of the best times at the District Meet was the running of the Century by Glen Priddy, He ran it in 9. 9 seconds to win. We regret that there were no pictures taken of the track boys so we will try'naming them from memory, and if we leave anyone out it wasn't on purpose. SENIORS: Jerry Hamm. Royce Mull. JUNIORS: Blain Duncan, Glen Priddy, James Harris, Marvin Fleetwood, John Miller, Charley Greene, Larry Day, Tommy Norton. SOPHOMORES: James Huffman, Lavon Cox. FRESHMEN: Neal Brockway, Wayne Avey, James Norris, Don Jameson. BASEBALL '52 As there was only two teams in the district this year, Terrell and Plano, they played a three out of five series. The Tigers won the first game in the seventh to win by one run. Then Plano won three in a row, two being close games. The Tigers deserve plenty of praise as they only had three returning lettermen from last year's Regional Champions. Next year should bring better results. The leading batter was Bobby Richardson who played his last game for Terrell High School. We are sorry there were no pictures taken of the team, therefore there were none available BASKETBALL '52 This was the first time that a basketball team had hit the hardwoods for Terrell in quite a few years. As was expected they didn't show too well, but participated in quite a number of well-played games. Their do or die spirit kept them in the game. No matter what the score was they played their best until the game was over. Terrell Terrell Terrell Terrell Front row: Wayne Boles, Rupert Henry, James Harris,Glen Priddy and Marvin Fleet wood. The Terrell Tigers, after three unsuccessful attempts of capturing the district crown, finally succeeded in winning it, but as Tigers never give up, they went into a sudden- death playoff with the following three teams: Linden, Edgewood and Sulphur Springs. The Tigers met the strongest team first in playing Sulphur Springs, and playing one of their best games of the season completely outplayed them to come out as victors. Then the Tigers' next opponent was a strong Linden team, who on the same day that the Tigers beat the Wildcats, won a game from Edgewood. So their worries weren't over yet. At the start of the game it looked as if the Tigers hopes were to be van- quished, but as Tigers will, they came up in the latter part of the game to whip the 0 Linden Tigers by an overwhelming score of 18 to 7, and win the first regional crown in T. H. S. History. With the team that the Tigers had and the overwhelming support there was no doubt in the minds of the people that Terrell would come out victorious, and they did. This was a very good game, considering that it was the first game of the season. Pleasant Grove led at the half, but the Tigers with a fine last half surge, came up on the top of a 25-13 score for their first victory. - Happy over the fact that they beat a favored Pleasant Grove team, the Tigers worked hard in preparation for the coming game with Athens. Athens had yet to beat a Vineyard- coached Tiger eleven so they were prepared for the arrival of the Tigers. The game rocked along with the score tied, but with about four minutes to play Athens blocked a Terrell punt and later turned this into a touchdown and the Tigers were on the short end of a 21-14 score. After the previous week and a taste of defeat, the Tigers decided that they would like to get revenge. They did, for they smothered H weak MBSQUUC team 34-0- THEN, the game of games, the annual Terrell-Kaufman battle. When game time rolled around the Tigers had been picked as easy meat for the Lions and we had an over- flow crowd. The so called King of Beast was sent home in a hurry as the powerful Tigers SKUNKED the Lions in one of their best games in history. The final score, Terrell 19, Kaufman 0. Then came the lull after the storm as the Tigers prepared to take on the Waxahachie Indians. The Indians were supposed to be pretty weak, but they gave the Tigers a good game but the score ended 26 to 6 in favor of the Tigers. Then the Tigers prepared to go into the last half of the season after losing only one out of the first five games. Their foe and their first conference game was Grand Saline. Grand Saline was supposed to be very strong and have a veteran team, but the Tigers took the strongness out of them with a 32 to 0 licking. Next on the list was a team that was favored to go pretty far in the state finals. This team being none other than Arlington. The Tigers with great support from the home town people went to Arlington and brought home the BAC ON. The final score in a very well- played game being 24 for the Tigers and 14 for Arlington. The coming week brought the second conference game with the Tigers playing host to the Van Vandals. The Vandals were also supposed to have a big and strong team but I guess the Tigers were just a little bigger and stronger because the score ended 26-'7 in the Tigers' favor. The next game was also a conference game as the game was played at Memorial Stadium instead of at Wills Point where it was originally slated. The Tigers took the other Tigers in hand as Wills Point's efforts were hopeless and the final score was 33-O in fyou guessed it a gainj Terrell's favor. The next week brought on the last game of the regular season as the Tigers, fwho were now District Champsj prepared to take on their last conference foe. The team was Mineola with their all-district back Joe Bob Smith. Smith was just about the team but as we all know, it takes all eleven men to win a ball game and so the Tigers were victors once again by the count of 26-7. As this game had nothing to do with the district champions, but change their record, one might think that few people would accompany the Tigers to Mineola, but I think that I am safe in saying that there were about twice as many people from Terrell as there were from Mineola, and the weather was very cold. This was the Finis to a'very fine season with an over all record of NINE wins and ONE defeat. This was not expected at the first of the year at all, but the Tigers came through. The Tigers, winning the district, had to play the Pleasant Grove Bobcats again for the Bi-District Title. This game was to be played at Pleasant Grove. The Tigers worked hard all week in preparation for the big battle. The student body held a pep rally at the school inviting everyone to come out, and they all turned out in style to cheer the Tigers on. Then came the time of the ball game. The Tigers were ready, but so were the Bobcats. They were not going to be slipped upon again. Right at the beginning of the second quarter the Bobcats pushed over a score but missed the extra point to lead the Tigers 6-0. With about three minutes until the half, the Tigers scored and kicked the extra point to lead at the half 7-6. The second half started off in style as Terrell soon scored a touchdown and extra point to lead 14-6. Then the Bobcats started in. They scored without losing possession of the ball to make the score 14-13, Thenthe Bobcats scored again after taking the ball when the Tigers punted to make the score 19-14. With about four minutes left in the game the Tigers scored and kicked PAT. to lead 21 to 19. But the Bobcats didn't give up. They took the kickoff and went all the way in about seven plays with the last play being a 33 yard jaunt for the clincher, as the Tigers didn't get a break in their four plays and the Bob- cats took over again and ran the time out. The final score in one of the most thrilling games of the season being 25 for the Pleasant Grove Bobcats and 21 for the Terrell High Tigers. This was the end of one of the best seasons that THS has ever had. Jack Blasius Q . 3.14 xxx? 5 . y -L ' 'ff 1 Q 2'01lYl0 L ?o he JOM CN ff if A , - 1. , . 1 an Zffkx I ei , 2 G... Raymond Harris: No, Sir. Mr. Young: Then don't talk like an idiot. Mr. Duncan was in fine humor after lunch and instead of settling right down to civics, he decided to tell the class a couple of jokes he'd heard the night before. Everybody laughed and laughed except one girl in the first row. What's the matter? asked Mr. Duncan. Haven't you got a sense of humor? Joyce Henson replied, I don't have to laugh, I'm transferring to another school tomorrow Mr. O'Neil was trying to get over to the Trigonometry class the simple idea of addition. Annoyed father: Good heavens, Tom, why aren't you at the top of the Physics class once in awhile instead of always at the bottom? Tom Liston: It doesn't make any difference, Dad. 'Fessor Akin talks so loud you can hear him at both ends. Thomas Vance: Congratulate me: I won the election. Jack B.: Honestly. Thomas: Oh, why bring that up. Miss Stephenson: What we need is some life in this class. Let's sponsor a scavenger hunt. Oran Hamby: Scavenger Hunt? What do we shoot them with? Mrs. Tyson: Let's see what seniors know about a government. John Rowden, who is the Speaker of the House? John Paul: Mother.
