V. NELSON, USN LCDR Mark V. V. NELSON was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on 16 October 1931. He enlisted in the Navy on 1 April 1952 and attended Officer Candidate School at New- port, Rhode Island beginning in March 1958. LCDR NELSON has hadabackground in the Amphibious Force since his first duty assignment as an officer. Upon receiving his commission as an Ensign, LCDR NELSON reported for duty as Navigator aboard USS PAUL REVERE CLPA 2485 where he served until June 1961. At that time, in his first billet aboard an LST LCDR NELSON became Executive Officer of USS JEROME COUNTY QLST 8485. From February 1963 until June 1964 LCDR NELSON was ashore serving as Senior Naval Advisor and Junk Force Advisor for first Corps at Danang, Republic of Vietnam. Since then he has held billets in the 'Officer Per- formance Section of BUPERS from June 1964 until March 1966, as Commander PCF Division 104 from March 1966 Lmtil May 1967, and as Executive Officer aboard USS CABILDO QLSD 165 from May 1967 until March 1969. Prior to reporting aboard TERREBONNE PARISH LCDR NELSON served as Officer in Charge U.S. Naval Forces Philippines detachment, Singapore. LCDR NELSON relieved LCDR F.L. EDMUNDS Jr., USN LCDR Frank L. EDMUNDS Jr., USN, a native of Norfolk, Virginia, was born on 17 March, 1931. Enlisting in the Navy in May 1948 he served in a variety of ships and stations until March of 1958 when he attended Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island, and upon completion was commissioned an Ensign, U.S. Navy. LCDR EDMUNDS was first assigned to duty as an officer aboard USS CANBERRA QCAG 25 where he served as Assistant Missile Officer. In January 1961 as a Lieu- tenant ljg5 he reported for duty in USS VOGELESANG QDD 8625 where he served as Gunnery Officer until January 1963. While attending U.S. Naval Destroyer School in New- port Rhode Island, he was promotedto Lieutenant on 1 June 1962. During the following two years he served in USS SELLERS QDDG 115 as Weapons Officer. In July 1964 he commenced a three year tour as a Weapons Instructor at Destroyer School in Newport where he was promoted to Lieutenant Commander on 1 January 1967. After detach- ment from Destroyer School in June 1967 he was assigned as Executive Officer of USS HUGH PURVIS QDD 7095.
