Rawnsley faculiy E X :sum In these times certain people doubt that it is worth while to make plans for the days ahead. Many feel that living day to day will be enough, since no one knows the future. - Today it requires real courage to prepare yourself for the'future. What you hope to do and what you hope to be, however, must always be in the back of your minds, regardless of how your lives may be affected by the con- flicts about you. You must have the faith and serenity to prepare for the future. When these ' Z troubled days are past, you will never be forced to reproach yourself for not preparing for the duties of peace as you prepared for the duties of war. ' rtf in Z 39 , li ,tri . These words are as familar to all of us as is the person who says them. It is Mrs. Clark, the school's efficient secretary. Writing excuses, checking statistics, compiling records, and issuing the daily bulle- tin are only a few of the many ways in which Mrs. Clark has proved invaluable to the school. In addition to keeping the office in order, she manages to find time to be a friend and a help to all. page eight vt .QK 5' pi Richard E. The senior class president is ineligible to hold the office of council president. The Senior class has four members in the council-the business managers of the yearbook and the paper, one elected member, and the class president. The Junior class has two elected members and the class president. The Freshmen and Sophomore classes each have two members-the class president and one elected member. The council president is elected by the student body. Although he is refused the right to vote, he conducts all meetings. The rest of the officers are elected by the council members. For the 1950-51 year the officers were as follows: Dick Sonntag, President, Jay Riedel, Vice-President, Peg Stansbury, Secretary, and Jim Harmon, Treasurer. The faculty advisor for the year is Mrs. Carlton, whose iob it is to offer suggestions for the improvement of the council. Some of the council's activities for this year were as follows: planning the school calendar, distributing conces- sions, and settling any disputes that may arise. page thirteen 5 Q3 . Four years after Nick Reinhardt and Bruce Smith organized the Terrace Park Science Club, under the able leadership of Miss Philhower as sponsor and adviser, it has advanced from two members to a growing group of twelve. The club had contributed to the laboratory many pieces of equipment which would be a delight to any scientific-minded person. The Terrace Park Science Club has bi-monthly meetings. Many proiects were outlined for the year by Louis Strass, the President. The other officers are Bob Patrick, Vice President, and Shirley Scales, Sec- retary-Treosurer. ' The club is a member of Things ot Science , an organization which distributes various products of industry. lt is also an affiliate ot the Science Clubs of America. This year the club has made trips to various in- dustries-the Water Works, a steel mill, and others. The purpose of the club is to create a better under- standing and interest of science in high schools. I ki i i Wifi V i l Row 1-M. Havens, S. Arnett, H. Thompson, J. Vogel, S. Havens, C. Row 3-E. Under the capable direction of Elizabeth Bristle, President, Sue Havens, Vice-President, Dionne Cady, Secretary, and Sue Arnett, Reporter, Chapter l92 has held a number of events which had the interest not only of the school but ot other chapters all over the state. The year started oft in grand style with the election of .lay Riedel as State President at the state convention at Mentor, Ohio. ln November a tea was held tor the purpose ot arousing interest in other schools to organize new chapters. ln December a Christ- mas party was given, and in Jariuary the new members were initiated. Argo. One of the oldest and most honored organizations in Terrace Park is the Hi-Y. This club is open to all Senior and Junior boys. lt is affiliated with the National Hi-Y organization and also the Y.M.C.A. i The organization of this year's group started late, with the applications for admission being sent out in early January. A large group of boys responded and the February initiation brought in a very capable and qualified group of neophytes. This group, along with the seven members remaining from last year, composed an energetic and active fellowship. The-first and probably most important of the proiects of the Hi-Y was the raising of money for the March of Dimes. In view of this, Hi-Y sponsored an intra-mural basketball game between the champion Junior team and an All-Star team composed of representative players of each team in the intramural league. By merely passing the hat , S23 was collected. This money was added to an estimated S50 which was collected by the organiza- tion by asking for donations on downtown street corners. Under the sponsorship of Mr. Wilson and Mr. Avery, the Hi-Y has done much this year to improve the ideals of this national group. These ideals are to increase scholarship, fellow- ship, and moral standing among high school boys. The Terrace Park Thespian Club is undoubtedly one of the most active clubs in the High School. lt is an honorary organi- zation of students who are interested in the production of plays. The local troupe, No. 776, is a member of the National Thespian Society, which was organized into a national club from the original Thespian Society of Fairmont State College, in West Virginia. lts officers are Bebe Williamson, President, Lois Ratliff, Vice-President, Penny Roose, Secretary, and Bar- bara Beets, Treasurer ' ln order to become a member of the Thespian organization, the candidate must have achieved certain qualifications re- quired by the national club, plus those standards required by the local troupes. The objects of this non-social, non-secret society are two- fold: lil to establish and advance standards of excellence in all phases of ,dramatic arts in secondary high schools, and l2l to create an active interest in histrionics among students. He is a graduate of the College of Music at Cincinnati and has done an excellent job of instructing the All-Hi chorus. . All-Hi has taken part in a number of activities which have been given at Terrace Park. The first important event was the Variety Show in which All-Hi sang Let's Dance , Blue Skies , and The Whiffenpoof Song . In the Christ-E mas performance, the chorus sang Masters In This HalI , O Holy Night , Bethlehem , and The Lord Bless You. Every year it is traditional for the All-Hi chorus to present anoperetta. This year they gave Gilbert and SuIlivan's Mikado. The female leads were held by Barbara Beets, Yum-Yum, Lois Ratliff, Pitti-Sing, Sally Chapman, Beep-Bo, page forty-four Row 4-S. Donaldson, S. The Mikado is the story of the Mikado's son who has run away from his father's palace because he does not want to marry an elderly lady named Katisha. He is in love with Yum-Yum, who is supposed to marry Ko-Ko, Lord High Executioneer of Titipu. He disguises himself as Nanki-Poo, a wandering minstrel, and offers to accommodate Ko-Ko and be executed in a month's time provided he is allowed to marry Yum-Yum for that month. Ko-Ko, who has promised the people that he will endeavor to find victims for execution, accepts the offer, and steps into a neat little plan that results in his marriage to Katisha, as the price of release, thus leaving Yum-Yum to Nanki-Poo. Upon return from a trip through France, Miss Harris came to teach at Terrace Park. The club meets once a month. At the first meeting of the year, officers were elected and plans, made. The results of the election are os follows: President, Bill Sommer, Vice-President, Penny Roose, Secretary- Treasurer, Dianne Cady. There were two members initiated at the January meeting. They were Marlene and Dorothy Jennings. The club has had a very full and interesting sched- ule this year. One of the most interesting activities was o trip to the Guild Theater to see a foreign movie. ln the spring a Spanish Fiesta was held. Everyone had a delightful time. ln May all the members went down- town to o Language Club dinner party. Near the end of the year, the students in the Language Club presented a short comedy in two acts. lt was given for the students who are interested in taking modern languages. page forty-five Syl' x a I 9 t wax l I N. I just returned from a trip to Hollywood, where Bebe Williamson is thrilling everyone with her heavy dramatic roles. Dianne Cady is also doing well as the queen of Class B opera houses. While out there, I SGW a picture of Bert Muscles Argo. He's being featured in advertisements on the back covers of several outstanding detective magazines, which incidentally are edited by Penny Roose. On the return trip I stopped by in Phoenix, Arizona, and met Bill Sommer. Bill is raising pet turtles on his reptile farm iust outside town. Elizabeth Phil- hower is his partner in this venture. Also in town are Mary Hebble and Clarerie Thompson, who have taken up nursing as a career. I stopped in Indianapolis on Memorial Day to see the speedway race. Met Ruby Fisher, who was in charge of concessions there. She had Virginia Hines and Mary Gibson as two of her assistants. You probably heard that the race was won by Bill Ratliff. Bill was driving the Ratliff Special, owned and cared for by his sister, Lois. Gary Bowen also drove in the race, but finished a poor last. Gary always was much better at flying than at driving. Up in Oxford, O., the students are all clamoring to join the fabulous sorority, Sigma Mu, founded by Dot McConnell and Ruth Barnett. A Peg Williams and Joyce Money now operate the bowling alley in Milford, while Ronnie Halbauer is right down the street running a dentist's office. He has Dorothy Wells as his secretary and assistant. Norman SmiIey Wright and I are still working in that little combo in Paul White's nite club. Norm's hot trumpet can be heard for miles. Write me a note if you have heard from any of the rest of the old gang. Yours truly, D. S. page forty-eight New York City, New York June ll, I96I Dear Dick, b I iust received your letter of the 7th and thought you would like to hear some news I've picked up about the Parkers of 'Sl . Strange as it may seem, the technician back of my show is Louis Strauss. And did you see the Nancy Chapman Show last night? She's taken over Ruth Lyon's old spot. Her vocalist is Addie Martin, who specializes in blues singing. Two of our former classmates, Barbara Beets and Mary Jo Havens, are tortur- ing the nation by writing iingles for Proctor 84 Gamble. Rumor has it that Elizabeth Bristle and Bill Robinson are going through life trimming trees together. Also doing a good iob holding up the home front are Freda Litton, Thelma McCollum, and Mary Jane Van Camp. Home Ec is coming in handy for them. What do you think. of President Riedel's new reform bill? I happened to be in Congress the other day when he tried to get it voted upon. But one Congress- man didn't like it and set a new record for the fillibuster. Someone said his name was Bob Werner. The only thing that stopped him was a bunch of high school kids from Ohio on a trip to the Capital. And taking it all down without a mistake was Ray Cross, recently appointed Congressional Recorder. Two of the secretaries in the Pentagon are Shirley Adkins and Betty Chandler. I hear they use up an average of 8 pencils a day. I was looking at the sports page over my cup of coffee this morning and happened to notice the box score of the championship pro-basketball game. One team was led by a combination of Rich Massman and Rolf Shorty Dority. But the star of the game turned out to be Jesse Applegate, who sank a left handed, under-hand shot from the center of the circle to win the game in the final seconds. There was also an article about the Madisonville All-Stars' hard-driving fullback, Black Russ Ratterman. The racing news had a lot about the big race between the country's two leading jockeys, Valdean Morris and Dick Smith. The recently named Horse of the Year was owned and trained by some obscure millionaire. His name, William Purvis, Esq., was vaguely familiar. . I hear you and Norm got offers to play in the Jazz at the Philharmonic Show. Good Luck! Sincerely yours, D. R. P. S. Gayle Crawford's still trying to get out of debtor's prison.
