CO1 G THE DISTANCE Dashing through long and tiring trails of Garin Park and running lap after endless lap around the field, cross-country team runners had one thing on their minds, Going The Distance? These were part ofthe strenuous exercises they had to go through to be in best possible running condition, the team practiced sixteen to eighteen hours a week and ran about six to eight miles each day in practice alone. Coach, Mr. Ron Stark, worked equally hard preparing them for their meets that they had this year. Everyone on the team had to have one of three qualities. They had to be crazy, or had to have a lot of self-discipline or they had to be truly dedicated, because cross-country has a lot of pain involvedf' said Coach Stark. Top Runners on the team were Manoj Sen, Ramon Fuentes, Con- nie Hurtado, Chris Finn, and David Benevente, these five runners were the strength of the team. However other team members were nothing to leave behind for without them they could not have finished in such a dynamic way. Gln a sport like Cross-Country, being a boy or girl doesn't matter as long as you can run the long distances in a good time, said Connie Hurtado. She was the only girl here to go to the finals! We would not have had a chance without the strength and encour- agement of Coach Starkf' said Freshman Zeddrick Scott. Although we lost two of our top runners and gained a lot of inexperienced runners, we still felt that we could do well, said Manoj Sen and Ramon Fuentes. And they were proven to be correct as the teamjogged their way into one of the top four spots in the Hayward Athletic league. Cross Country YQ? fl9
