A vital part of Tennessee Wesleyan College, the building known as Old College stands as a reminder of the past and present. This three story brick building was built by the Order of Odd Fellows who obtained a charter from the State of Tennessee on January 2, 1854. This was to be eventually bought by the Methodist Episcopal Church South on October 22, 1857, and then became known as Old College. At this time Old College came under the control of the Holston Conference. In 1858 Old College opens as the Athens Female College with seventy students. The college has always been used as an educational facility with the exception of the year 1862 when it was used as a hospital during the Civil War. After the Civil War, there was a dispute over the building and in a 1870 Supreme Court decision the building was returned to the Methodist Episcopal Church South. It was later called East Tennessee Wesleyan College and now is the focal point of the campus. Presently the McMinn County Living Heritage Museum is located in the Old College building. The museum was placed on the National Historical Register in 1983. Extensive renovation has taken place on Old College and nine rooms comprise the museum with each room sponsored by a family or company. The museum houses articles from McMinn, Meigs, and Monroe counties that date from 1820 to 1940. Tennessee Wesleyan College carries on the tradition set by Old College today. 17
