ENDOWMENT They walked into the silent, crimson dawn: Two minds, two hearts, that thought and beat as one— The sun arose to kiss the golden sand As they stood there engulfed by sea and sky. There came a quiet voice that spoke to them: | am the sea that represents all life, And now | wish to give you of myself. The snow-capped tide flowed in, and then it ebbed To leave a host of shells upon the beach— Minute and gleaming in the morning sun. The kindred minds and hearts picked up the first To find engraved on it: “Yours Knowledge is; Use it to banish darkness from young minds— Use it as food to nourish ihose young minds. A second shell dropped Wisdom at their feet, And brought these ageless words before their eyes: Dear ones, | am that wisdom that you seek; Take me, and | shall elevate your souls Up to the crest of every wave | make.’ Then close beside the lovely wisdom shell The angel shell of Understanding lay— And there by it they found the shell of Love. They gathered them into their eager hands, And thanked the boundless ocean for its gifts. Dear hearts, | wish to show you one thing more— For without it my gifts amount to nought. The endless tide flowed in again to ihem, And from its foam there rose a battered cross. Without this cross all else is but in vain' '— And with these words the ocean depths were hushed.
