6'There's a world out there to be conquered! For thousands of years man has tried to be victorious over his world. Columbus defeated a cen- turies-old fear by sailing off the edge of the earth and returning safely. Conquering is not always physical. Mental victories have inspired man and encouraged him to continue, even at the risk of his life. John Kennedy of- fered the younger generation a 'cnew frontierv on which to plan their fu- tures. Martin Luther King sought to guide his people to a new age of new goals, standards and concepts. Yet each time man conquers, he must also adapt. Customs and ideals are never the same in two different na- tions. In earlier centuries, schools did not include courses on the life and cus- toms of people on other continents. Today, however, education has be- come essential in helping man to un- derstand and appreciate the goals and aspirations of other peoples. A college is not merely a place for educating the mind from musty text- books. It is a center of experiences. It is a center of challenge. It is a cen- ter of adapting and coping.

A sa if Learning does not have to be con- fined to the classroom. Yet, here it has a planned beginning. The atmo- sphere and stimulant are available to help prove old theories and formulate new ones. Through classroom discussions, man has the opportunity to present his ideas and to hear those of others. Under the guidance of experienced leaders, he begins to shape the pattern by which he will live the rest of his life. This pattern may not follow his old con- cepts completely, yet, it will represent him as an individual. In the four walls of the core of learn- ing, he will learn to adapt, to explore, to see himself as a member of a pro- ductive society. Since his first moment on the college campus, he has adapted-to rules, to customs, to authority. He has learned that coping is often the stream of sur- vival.
