Three gymnasiums will be had when the massive struc- ture is completed. In addition to the enlarged main gymnasium floor for varsity basketball and the women's gynmasium, an intramural gym has been incorporated in the design of the new east wing. The building will also house a number of classrooms and offices for health and physical education, a concession room, individual exercie rooms, squash and handball courts, and appas ratus rooms. XVhen the overall program is completed, the new health and physical education building will be a complete unit for recreation, intramural sports, varsity basketball, swimming, and dancing. Also in tl1e offering under the large scale building program at Tech is a men's dormitory, a women's dormitory, a new training school, a field house, and a home economics management house. Funds for these additions to the campus were obtained from bonds issued under the authority of the I9-18 legislature. The first of two million dollar building programs. begun last year, saw the completion ol a new S6l0,000 library building, a new women's gymnasium and an ultra-modern indoor pool, a new heating plant, a me- chanical engineering laboratory building, and an 8,500 S., Z seat lootball stadium on one of the most attractive fields in the state. .-Xmong the Hrst ol these newly planned buildings to be constructed at Tech is the first two wings of an ultimate million-dollar dormitory that is already under construc- tion and will be built at a cost ol' 528,000 dollars. These initial wings will house 300 men. Each wing will be divided into two complete units, each incorporating its own recreation room, supervisor's apartment, laundry and trunk storage rooms. There are to be about 75 two room suites to each of the four separate units in the two new wings. Sleeping quarters and private study rooms will be provided for two men in each suite. The north wing lacing Seventh Street, will be a two-story structure. .X four-story south wing to the rear will completely 'fl'rame the main unit when the layout is viewed from the quadrangle. The first two wings, now under con- struction, will be parallel to Seventh Street and each wing will center on the main axis Qextendedj ol the quadrangle. The eventual plan for the completion of the men's dormitory quadrangle at an overall cost in excess of a million dollars, included the erection of east and west wings. The capacity of the four dormitory, six unit, quadrangle, modeled after the Harvard Yard, when com- pleted, will be 600. Kuifcbng 3 clay o During the past few years at Tennessee Tech a new institution has been born-a larger and greater Tech, under the leadership of an outstanding president. Sweep- ing changes have been made in instructional develop- ment as well as in the expansion of Tech's physical plant. The sessions 1948-49 and I949-50 are indeed high water marks in the growth of Tech. One of the greatest marks of Tech's advancement came in September, 1949 with the division of the college into five separate schools. The growth of the college from the standpoint of the student body and the increased facilities has necessitated this movement to a great extent. For example, there are as many engineering students now at Tech as there were students in the entire college a few years ago. Tech's enrollment for the 1949-50 session is approximately 2,200 including in-service students. June 1940 marked the largest graduating class in the history of the college. In June 1950 there will possibly be 500 graduates. Tech's enlarged enrollment and the separa- tion of the college into schools has brought the largest and one of the best trained faculties that Tech has had since its beginning. It is probable, too, that this division into schools will serve as a stepping stone for graduate work at Tennessee Tech a few years hence. Certainly Tech will now be able to meet professional accreditation requirements in certain professional areas. Each division of the college will be able to advance under its own heading, thereby aiding the respective student to gain more value from his school. Tech's recent physical development has reached its climax during the past two years, with the beginning of its ten-year building program. The session 1949-50 saw a new million dollar building program begin on the campus. A gymnasium addition and new dormitories are included in the project. Launching of the first unit in the new million dollar construction program at Tech, the second since the end of the war, Tech moves on to a greater physical expan- sion. Highlighting the extended building program is the erection of the modern health and physical education building, which will be completed by December, 1950. The health and physical education building, of which a rearranged old gymnasium and the recently completed gym annex are to be a part, will be one of the hnest units of its type in the South. A new wing now under construction, will be located in front of and adjacent to the present gym structure and will extend forward to place the front of the build- ing in line with the fronts of South Hall and West Hall. A seating capacity of 5000 will be available upon the completion of enlarging the old gym. Both the north and south sides of the existing structure will be widened by 35 feet to provide additional seats for thousands on the main level. Extending the front of the building forty feet forward will make possible a horseshoe bleacher arrangement. Double-decking of gymnasium seats and galleries on three sides in a U-shaped arrangement as on the ground 1

Annex, designed by arclzitzwt Donald Souilzgnte of Nashville. ANNEX WILL DOUBLE SOUTH HALL CAPACITY Hlork is progressing rapidly on the construction of the 200,000 dollar addition to South Hall. The completely modern Iireproof three-story U-shaped annex will be completed early next year and will ad-join the West side of South Hall, with a main entrance on the west ap- proach to the quadrangle. A spacious inner courtyard will be enclosed by the completed dormitory. The court will be accessible by a driveway on the west side of the annex. SIXTY ROOMS Sixty new rooms housing I20 women will more than double the present capacity of the building. A feature ol the newer structure will be attractive and spacious social rooms and recreation lounges. Practically planned laundry and trunk storage rooms are to be included in the basement. In addition there will be a new superina tendents' apartment. Page I0
