eclz Uzrrfugh the year The Tennessee Polytechnic Institute has had a typical American growth. Open- ing its doors to students on September H, lfllli, the school began a development that has been as constant as the passing ol' time. Originally Tech's grounds and early buildings were those belonging to Dixie College, a private institution founded in lflll but purchased and appropriated lor the new college by Putnam County and the City of Cookeville. By H927 the State Board ol' Education authorized the offering. in 1928-W29, of a complete Iour-year college course. the granting of the degree of Bachelor of Science, and the discontin- uation ol' all secondary work. For Tech the years l9l7, l927, and H129 were important in its physical expan- sion. During that period the General Assembly of the State of Tennessee made large appropriations lor buildings. Among those added were a dormitory lor women, the enlargement ol' the Administration Building to include an auditorium and two wings lor classrooms, the Science Building, Gymnasium, a central heating plant, the lin- gineering and Home Economics Buildings. Since lfllll an Industrial Arts Building, a Foundry, and a Hospital-Infirmary were constructed. Extensive repairs have been made since lil-13. Trailer houses, Dixie Court, and YValnut Hall have been recently added to accommodate veteran students. The Science Annex and the Student Union Building were completed lor the IEH7- l948 session. As the years have passed, Tennessee Tech has remained the only state-supported technical college in Tennessee. lts function is to train students in agriculture, trades, and industries, to prepare teachers for elementary schools and vocational teachers lor secondary schools, and to include, also, a four-year technical and engineering program, with all its curricula providing lor a general cultural education, in addi-
