sir iff 23? if 'iff tion to technical and professional training. On March 31, 1939, the institution was admitted to membership in the Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. Whether meeting demands for better-trained young people for business positions, lor trades, science, agriculture, home economics, engineering, teaching, for the pro- fessions, or expanding and enriching its courses of study, or setting a pace in secur- ing higher scholastic standards, the Polytechnic Institute has taken pride in trying to keep ahead. Such ellorts have brought results. There are now nearly one hun- dred on its instructional staff, approximately eighteen hundred students on its rolls, representing twenty-three states and three foreign countries. The senior class of 1948 will be the largest that has ever graduated from the Polytechnic Institute in its thirty- three years of existence. Today, under the able leadership of its fourth president, Everett Derryberry, Tech launches on a million-dollar expansion program - the largest in the history of the College. This new program includes a six-hundred-thousand-dollar library, with thirty-seven thousand cubic feet of space, the enlargement of the gymnasium by the addition of a stage for dramatics, sixty by thirty-five feet deep, spectator space for basketball, a back stage auxiliary gymnasium, having offices, locker rooms, and balcony space for women's physical education and intramuralsg and a ground Iloor swimming pool with locker rooms. The efliciency of the College Heating Plant will be increased one hundred and fifty per cent of its present capacity and there will be a steam laboratory constructed on the north side of the heating plant. These additions will approximate one hun- dred thousand dollars. Tech's million-dollar program will also call for the construction of a new dairy barn to replace the one that burned, the building of a second farm implement and storage barn, and a new trades and maintenance building that will be placed west of the Industrial Arts Building. '
