22 Dr. Frederick S. Humphties Outstanding Leadership $ Local, National and International Frederick S. Humphries became the fourth president of Ten. nessee State University injanuary, 1975. The Appalachicola. Florida. native graduated magna cum laude from Florida A8cM University with a major in physical chemistry. He went on to earn a doctorate. with honors. from the University of Pittsburgh. Society memberships include Phi Lambda. Sigma Xi. Alpha Kappa Mu and Beta Kappa Chi. Prior to coming to Tennessee State University. Dr. Hum- phries held a number of directorships and the position of vice' president with the Institute for Services to Education tISEt in Washington, D.C. Since becoming President of Tennessee State University, Dr. Humphries has worked diligentiy to carry out the goals of the institution and to establish TSU as middle Tennesseehs premier urban university. While Tennessee State University has benefited dramatically from the leadership provided by Dr. Frederick S. Humphries over the last ten years, he has also provided leadership in educational and civic affairs in the cbmmunity of which TSU is a part. He has taken seriously the demands of local, national. and international outreach that is a commitment of the insu'tu- tion. and he has worked tirelessly in its fulfillment. Locally. he has been a member of the Nashville Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Nashville. the Young Men's Christian Associaton, and a member of the Ethical Canduct Board for the Metropolitan Nashville Government. He has worked with the religious community as a Supporter of the Interdenominational Ministers' Fellowship, an organization of black and white churchmen and churehwomen in Nashville. His council and advice played an important role in that organization's establishment of the College Trust Fund. a fund to assist students in the historically black institutions of Nashviile. Through his speaking engagement, media interviews, and per- sonal appearances at a wide variety of civic. religious. and com- munity functions in Nashville. Dr. Humphties has created a very positive image of Tennessee State University as an institu- tion of compassion and quality. Although he has served as a member of a number of boards of direcwrs over the last ten years. it has been his activities as a member of the Board of Direetors of the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education tNAFEOt that the leadership of Dr. Humphries has been most persuasive and ef- fective. As the Chairman of the Science Advisory Committee of NAFEO. he has led the Committee in a close working relation- ship with the national government and secured more than ten million dollars. Ior both research centers at historically black insu'tutions and for funds for academic enrichment for faculty and students. The merger of Tennessee State University and the UniverSity of Tennessee at Nashville in 1979 enhanced the international dimensions of the Unitersity's research and academic offer- ings. Under Dr. Humphries' leadership. the institution is developing a masters degree in international programs to meet this mandate. The University is continuing its role in assisting in developmental work in the underdeveloped countries. The wife of Dre Humphrics. the former Antionette McTUmEf of Pittsburgh. The Humphries family has given much as Frederick Humphries has devoted his genius and energy to a greater Tennessee State University, a greater Nashville and a greater Tennessee.
