The 1944 TSU graduates' con- tributions as a member of the staff and faculty were recognized this year when she was de- clared a Founder's Day honoree. Beginning her career as a secretary in the Department of Home Economics, Ms. Robinson began her move to the business school faculty by teaching several business education courses, including executive secretary skills, office machines, shorthand. and typewriting. About eight years ago she served as assistant director of the business education evening school. Future plans include returning to Chattan- ooga. Tenn, her hometown, and travel to Europe and Africa. RECRUITING STUDENTS A MAJOR ACTIVITY During the past year, Tennessee State University has instituted a rigorous, aggressive plan for getting students to choose TSU. The Office of Admissions and Records and a University-Wide Recruiting Committee have worked very hard to recruit students for the University. Programs entitled ttPresenting TSU were held in Memphis and Chattanooga. The program featured performances by the dance ensemble, Players Guild. band and university choir. Other on and off campus recruiting activities were held to give perspective students a view of TSU. 54 Scenes from on and off-oampus recruiting pro- grams include tclockwiset High school students from West Tennessee who attended the Agriculture Ca- reer Awareness Symposium as they prepare to have lunch; Dean of Admissions and Records James Ellzy and Registrar Shirley McNair are very important ube- hind the scenest people - they make sure all stu- dents are properly enrolled and registered for class; A representative from USDA and Dean Roiand Norman talk about TSU and career opportunities in agriculture with visiting students; Dr. Andrew Ryal, assistant dean of the School of Engineering. talks with a stu- dent about engineering education at TSU; University Recruiters, Barry Havens, Evelyn Hadley, Leroy Alex- ander and Patricia Whitmore. Dr. Hooks attended a reception in his honor at the home of TSU President - Dr. Frederick Humphries. Mrs. C.E. McGruder, local civic leader, and Ms. Georgette Peek had the plea sure of being photographed with Dr. Hooks. HOOKS URGES BLACKS TO VOTE, TO DREAM. By Sabrina Goodwin and Hakim Flahsul Reagan is the sorriest President of the twentieth century, according to Benjamin Hooks, the national ex- ecutive director of the NAACP. Speaking at the Gentry Complex at the Co-Curricular awards pro- gram. Hooks said, America has tried to get ahead by feeding the hungry. clothing the naked, sheltering the homeless, and the best that this ad- ministration can do is replace the soup lines with the cheese lines. Hooks urged the sparse. enthusi- astic crowd to vote - the most powerful. precious and persuasive weapon that blacks have. Quoting Frederick Douglass. Hook said, slaves can't vote themselves free, but free men and women can vote themselves slaves by their indif- ference, lethargy, unconcem and la- ziness. iiThere are those who think their vote does not make a difference. Hooks said. Those who donit be- lieve this should go to Chicago and ask Jane Byrne who was recently outsted as the Democratic mayoral 'oandidate by Horold Washington. The civil rights leader confidently stated that Washington would win the upcoming Chicago mayoral elec- tions but also stated that if he hap- pens not to win, at least we fixed it so those who had it, won't have it anymore. Hooks quoted Langston Hughes. ttNever lose hold to your dreams, for without dreams life is a broken winged bird that cannot fly. Blacks have always believed that tomorrow would be a better day, Hooks said. Despite the unemployment rate of 22Wo, the unemployment rate of 5005 for black youth between the ages of 18-25, and also including the fact that there are about 9 million blacks living at or below the poverty level, we are still holding on to our dreams, Hooks said. Trying is a very important element in life, according to Hooks. The out- spoken leader quoted Benjamin Mayes. the Moorehouse College President, and stated that tragedy doesn't consist of having tried and failed, the tragedy consists of never having tried at all. Hooks encour- aged the students to continue the long hard successful struggle of their ancestors. Hooks pushed the students to keep struggling. hit the books and burn the midnight oil. He stressed that college should not only be a place for having a good time, but a place where you educate your mind and body. He also emphasized that students should take school more seriously. While exerting signs of a true be- liever, the NAACP leader said, 'tl teel good about the 1983 generation of today, who won't let anybody turn them around. I sent a letter in a heat-t ed exchange with President Reagan reminding him that you may kill the dreamer, but not the dream. Photos by John Class 111 PLAZA LIFE w:- '. Proverb ALMA MATER In the land of golden sunshine, By the Cumb'land's fertile shore, Stands a school for greater service, One that we adore. Alma Mater, how we love thee! Love thy white and blue, May we strive to meet thy mandates With faith that's true. Many come to thee for knowledge, Come from East, North, South and West, For they know that thou doth offer Such a rich bequest. Alma Mater, all thy children Worship at thy shrine May the God of nations bless thee With gifts divine. Send forth sons both strong and valiant Send forth daughters wise and true, Filled with hope and dauntless courage, Motives sane and true. Alma Mater, kindly mother, Smile on Tennessee: May she lift her head toward heaven, Honor country, God and thee. - L.M.
