Text from Pages 1 - 244 of the 1981 volume:

- Published by the student 'r .r THE BEGINNING OF . . . . . . JANUS was one of the early Italian gods. He is thought of as connected with the deer or gate, and he is sometimes pictured as holding, a key. In statues he is represented with two faces, one in front and one behind, to typify the power of seeing forward and backward at the same time. The Romans built a temple to Janus in the Roman Fdrum, in the shape of a double arch with doors. When these doors were closed the state was at peace; but when they were open, everyone knew that war was being waged in some part of the Roman world. 4,! . ha: TENNESSEE 1 STATE UNIVERSITY A NEW BEGINNING THE BEGINNING OF . . . . . . January, the month which may be thought of as the ttgateway to the year, takes its name from the god Janus. Janus-headed means double-headed, and Janus-faced coveys the idea of tttwo-facedf, insincere, 0r deceitful. It may mean that a question or situation has two sides to it, as in this quotation from the Atlantic Monthly: This is a Janus-faced fact. Because Janus faced both ways he became a symbol for openmindedness; for since he looked both forward and backward, he was able to take a just view of all questions. 4 NEW 5 A FRIENDSHIPS THE BEGINNING OF . . . . . . The History of Janus is not improperly subjoined to that of Saturn, for he was that most Ancient King of Italy amongst the Aborigines, or first Inhabitants of the Mauntains, that receiv'd Saturn, and gave him out of Crete. The Birth and Origin of Janus is very much controverted, whether he was the son of Coelus and Hecate, or was the same as the World, or the Sun, or else the same as Ogyges, who built Thebes fifteen hundred Years before the Foundation of Home, or whether he came from Seuthia into Italy, or else from Greece. And was the Son of Apollo by Creusa Daughter of Erictheus King of Athens, and reignfd with Camesed, a Native of the Country, both having their Palace in Janiculum beyond the Tyber. NEW EXPERIENCES Janus had the Titles of Deus Deorum, as being the most ancient of all the Gods; and that of Janus Pater, because he had been a true Father to his People. He was the God that presided at THE the Beginning of all Undertakings; To him the first Libation of Wine and Wheat was offer'd; the Preface of all Prayers was likewise directed to him by whom Access might be had to the other BEGINNING Deties; And so because through the Doors of Houses we must pass to the innermost Apartment, they were called Januae from Janus, O I i'l and were dedicated to him as their Protector. He 0 o o o a a was also eateemld the Inventor of Locks and Keys for their farther Security. He first consecrated the Bounds of Towns and Cities; and therefore when Romulus built the City of Rome, he sent into Tuscany to learn exactly such Forms and Ceremonies as their Ancestors had receifd from Janus THE BEGINNING OF . . . . . . He was the Inlroducer 0f the Months, and the first took the Denomination of January from him; though the first Day of the Month was sacred to Juno, yet this was by her Leave committed to the Protection of Janus, and at this time Cakes of new Meal and Salt were offerid to him, together with new Wine and Frankincense. Then all Tradesmen and Artists began their Works and the Trman Consuls appointed for that Year entered solmnly upon their Office, the Romans then took care that all Quarrels should be laid aside, that New-Years-Gifts, the Tokens of Friendship, should pass between ,em, and that the Day should conclude with Mirth and Diversion. Numa Pompilius instituted a Feast to Janus upon the ninth of this Month, when the Sacrifice was a Ram, and the Solemnities were perform,d with Man-like Exercises and THE Combats. Romulus and Tatius built a Temple to him upn the Union of the Sabin People with the Romans. Numa ordefd that the Temple should be shut in time of Peace, and open'd in BEGINNING that of War, from which Ceremony Janus was call'd Clusius and Patulcus, Names given with allusion to those Actions. The Romans being 3 OF warlike People, this Temple was seldom shut, o a o o o 0 except once in the Reign of Numa, then in the Consulate of T. Manlius Torquatus, and C. 12 Attilius Balbus, some years before the first Punic War, and afterwards in time of Augustus, when he had taken Possession of NEW CAMPUS SCENEBY The Univ. 0': Term ' '- : l3 This year the Yearlmnk stafl deveIOped a theme meaning beginnings. MEETING 9 ENTERTAINING STROLLING, RAPPING, nu -. - -- 2.1.1. ...1.! f -- ' . . mlaiymln at: g: STUDENTS SAY 0CNO,, TO BUSING By Sonya Dec W'illiams Irate student. Stephen Braden asks that John Merrill be replaced as llledtalllr between students and faculty. Merritt was replaced by SCA President. Roosevelt Ilamb. Why must we be bussed t0 the downtown campus? That was the question all of the business students were asking John Masten, Dean of the School of Business during an open forum held on September 18, 1980. The open forum gave students an opportunity to voice their opinion on the proposal to move all of the 300-400 level business courses to the downtown campus. Over 300 students attended the heated hour long meeting in the business building. Head football coach John Merritt acted as mediator ever the torum, until students asked him to step down, because they felt that Merritt was being ttused as an influence over the students, position against the proposal. If the 300-400 level business courses are moved downtown, according to Mastcn, uThiS program will heenme more visible to the business community? One student asked, uVVhy must we as full-time students he hussed for the convenience of part-time students? Another student stated, 0We were not included in the proposal. Masten said in a formal position paper, 0There are tinequities' and unfairness whichever way we go. I am not insensitive to business studentsa concerns. The problem is IIOW to balance these inequities so that in the long run Tennessee State University and its School of Business takes its rightful place in the urban and business community. As the meeting progressed the students became angry and frustrated, because they felt that Masten was not answering their questions. George Walker, 3 business major. who is chairman of the Business Student Coalition tan impromptu organization fighting the administratitm prepnsah encouraged students to stick together and reminded them that the forum was not the end uf the proposal situation. The Nobel is given to persons who have worked for the interest of humanity and - , ' , W Ammons, sightless since the age of 14, is an - ' ' ' .. .. example to emulate. A native of Carroll County, Mississippi, he graduated from the School for the Blind in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1960. Very independent, and an only child, Ammons examined all possibilities after graduation and decided college was the next step. uI knew it would be hard to find employment because I was blind, he said. In 1964 he earned a B.S. degree in social science from Jackson State University and began looking for a teaching position. Two years later he got a job as an instructor at Immaculate Conception High School, in Clarksdale, Mississippi. For his services, Ammons says he received free room and board. ill used to sleep right up over the church, he said. While working in Clarksdale, he managed to do volunteer work by helping people obtain the GED tGraduate Equivalency Degreel and before he left, Ammons found himself head of the department of Social Sciences at the school. Now that doors were beginning to open for him, he decided to apply for an tiABC GrantetA Better Chance? to expand his classroom abilities. iiThis grant would take teachers and send them to school to learn to teach language arts, he said. Ammons had always wanted to be a teacher, and he felt that with a degree in counseling he could reach more people. aEvery teacher is a counselor, he explained. iiI wanted to be a counselor. I-Ie choose to enroll at TSU for graduate studies because it was a good university and it was convenient. TSU was accredited and I wanted to go to a black universityf, he said. iiBlacks attending white universities at that time were having some social problems, and I didrft want social and academic problems? uI also had a lot of friends and home folk from Mississippi at TSU? he added. TSU was eonVenient because it wasn't too far from his fiancee in Clarksdale. 56 Ammons counsels handicapped student as Fannie Perry, Coordinator of Counseling Services, looks on. There were no major disasters during the period of adjustment, Ammons stated, but there were some difficulties, especially with registration. But registration is a hassle even if you have 20-20 vision? he jokingly said. iil think I got acquainted with every pothole 0n the campus. iiIt took me about two weeks to find a good reader. he added. According to Ammons. being in the guidance and counseling center enabled him to meet a lot of students who were having unusual problems at school. - iiA lot of peeple didnit know about certain areas on the campus? he said . wl'hey needed someone who could understand handicapped people and could work with them. As a handicapped student I could better understand problems like registration? It was fortunate that the center administrators had the foresight to see the need for creating a position in the guidance counseling area to deal with the handicapped student specifically. Ammons became a vocational rehabilitation counselor and received his mastefs degree in Guidance and Counseling. He immediately began to put together a formal program to accommodate the needs of the disabled. Three conditions must exist before any individual can be eligible for the rehabilitation services: It the individual must have a substantial physical or mental impairment, 2t the person must have a vocational handicap as a result of the impairment and 3 there must exist the reasonable exception that the services provided by the program will help the individual to gain employment. Ammons said different students use the facility for different reasons. They may have a heart condition, a problem with sickle cell anemia or some obvious handicap? he said. I find out who they are, what their disability or handicap is and try to help them. Some even have emotional problems, he added. AMMONS cont. Ammons contacts each of the handicapped students at least once a semester. They report their schedule to him and tell him how they are doing. Although he is only a one man operation, he tries to provide other assistance for them. The tutorial center also has counselors who are employed by the State to give mobility training to students in order to familiarize them with the campus. iiAt other times we use some of our work-study students. And for some of the blind students, Ammons says that he may personally.r get the student acquainted with the school grounds. The vocational rehabilitation counselor does not limit his counseling to only the disabled or handicapped, but often is involved in getting a regular student into class or helping him to complete registration. nIt just depends on the nature of the problem, he said. iiMany of the students have the same problems. He is also responsible for recruiting handicapped students to the university, conducting group counseling sessions and conducting informal and theraputic interviews with his Clients. Ammons does not guarantee all of the vocational rehabilitation students a job once they graduate, but he does use every available source to aid them in finding employment. Being on the governorls and mayoris jobs for the handicapped committees provides him work leads for the students. Even though he burns up a lot of energy with his work day activities, Ammons says he devotes much of his time to his family. He and his wife Martha, enjoy playing cards and bingo with their kids and are big football fans and have never missed a TSU home game. uAlthough I did my undergraduate studies at Jackson State, I have to pull for the uBig Blue, he admitted. The Alpha Chapter tOriginaI founderst gave Up their rights and ritual and jewelry designs to Oklahoma State University in order that the National Organization be established. AS bands became more popular in the era between World War I and II, more women began to join their ranks. The growing number of girls in colleges and University bands gave birth to the idea of including qualified women band member into the existing structure of Kappa Kappa Psi Fraternity. Although the idea seemed to have wide-spread support within bands aving active chapters of Fraternity, a more attractive plan gained the widest acceptance that establishing a seperate sorority for band women, similar to and working with, but not an integral part of Kappa Kappa Psi. And so it can be said that the sorority as a National entity was created to meet the express needs of women in the college and university band across the nation. . ' t . . . . . . . - . e 13' enl.
