TENNESSEAN «, |andm„k in (ll lnsloiy ol Tcrincssct Stats Enivenily. This yeat marita U,e infaiatinn „( a court ordered merger with (he University of Tennessee at Nashville. The merging of thc.se two institutions with diverse histories, racial compositions and educational thrusts is significant as a development of higher education in America. It merges the rich traditions of both institutions and creates for the public a major comprehensive urban university. We have a challenge to bridge the accomplishments of the past, to innovate for the future and to design a campus environment that will continue the University's legacy of greatness. If we can accomplish these objectives, we can build a TSU that will continue to justify pride by its products and which will be a symbol that in this state and in the nation all people can learn, live and work together in a harmonious and healthy environment. As we move the institution into the 80's, I believe there are bright promises and great challenges ahead. It will take a special effort to merge the differences of the past to make them a oneness. How successful we are will determine whether the American dream can become a realitv Qn ,U who seek to share in its fruits and benefits. y ,bose The staff of the TENNESSEAN have included in these pages a collar pictures recording for posterity the activities and events of the past ye r Throughout this yearbook is the spirit and the scope of an institution which was blueprinted by this great American idea in higher education. To have had the opportunity of serving as president of the Student Government Association of Tennessee State University in the first year of the merger has indeed been a challenge for me and the entire membership of the Student Government Association. It is hard at this point to judge how effective the 1979-80 S.G.A. Administration has been. However, I do hope that as the months and years pass, students will reflect back on the 1979-80 S.G.A. Administration with good feelings. I have enjoyed serving my fellow students and Tennessee State University. Bond DR. WALTER STROTHER DAVIS August 5, 1905—October 17, 1979 I ■ . Strother Davis, under whose 25 year leadership at Tennessee State University achieved land grant status and full accreditation, died October 17, 1979, in Nashville, TN, after an extended illness. Dr. Davis, a native Mississippian, started his association with the state of Tennessee and Tennessee A I State College in the late 1920’s as a student of agriculture. During his undergraduate days, he was a star football and baseball player. From 1933 until 1936, he was Tennessee State’s football coach and his teams become a succession of greatness at the institution. However, his first love was agriculture and after receiving his doctorate, he continued teaching in that division until he was named president. Dr. Davis became the second president of Tennessee Agricultural and Industrial State College in 1943. During his administration the institution achieved university status and expanded to include a Graduate School, School of Arts and Sciences, School of Education and School of Engineering. In 1958, Davis’s interest in agriculture came to fruition with the establishment of the School of Agriculture and Home Economics. His administration laid the foundation for ‘TSU’s Touch of Greatness”. In 1958, the institution was also fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and was designated a Land Grant University. Dr. Davis was the recipient of a number of honors and awards throughout his educational career. But his greatest thrill came a few months after he retired in 1968 when he saw his dream fulfilled—the institution become Tennessee State When Dr. Davis became president of the University in 1943, there were 1100 students; when he retired in 1968 there were 6,000 students. Over 70% of the buildings on TSU’s campus were erected under his administration. The legacy left by Dr. Davis’, “Touch of Greatness,” gives the yearbook staff their reason for “Putting It All Together” for TSU in 1980. What is it all about my sister, when all is told, This constant striving for fame or gold, The fleeting joys, the bitter tears, We are only here a few short years, Nothing our own but the silent past, Loving or hating, nothing can last! What is it all about my sister It’s just a passing from day to day, A cross for me and a cross for you. Ours seem heavy, while others seem light, But God in the end makes all things right! He tempers the wind with such loving care, He knows the burdens each of us can bear, He changes life’s grey into heavenly gold, And that is all when all is told! my sister. (.iiiruc -«-«! ••• II Cliwt «tl SI ! Brief History On July 1. 1979, Tennessee State University and the University of Tennessee at Nashville became Tennessee State University Main Campus and Downtown Campus. This merger enables Tennessee State University to provide improved and expanded educational services. The main campus opened its doors on June 12, 1912. It became a full fledged Land Grant University in 1958 with the establish- ment of 5 schooIs--Agriculture and Home Economics. Arts and Sciences. Education. Engineering and the Graduate School. The School of Allied Health Professions was authorized in 1974 and the School of Business was authorized in 1976. The downtown campus opened its doors in 1971 to meet the needs for a fully functional evening University. It offered ' many educational opportunities forthe working adultinciudinga nursing and MBA program. : . Some ot the other programs 't developed by the downtown cam pus include awide variety of public and continuing educa- tion activities. As the everyday functions of society become more intricate. the need for this additional education increases. For some. an undergraduate degree will serve their purpose, for others the Masters degree - ' ' i3 will be the answer and still for others. the doctoral degree will be necessary to increase their effectiveness in achieving personal goals. 1 For over 60 years Tennessee State Univer- sity has provided an opportunity fartheyoung people to receive that kind of education. Moving forward with our expanded services and facilities on two campuses in building your kind of university. we reaffirm our commitment to serve as a significant and unique institution providing opportunities and establishing new programs to meet the ever changing demands and the needs of saciety. .V' i . , lllllllllll ;.I i. .l-l-I:l I - n n n u n hu-nugls-unI-nbonnu-nn-nu-n.nInuleui-n-nnuan-s MPH 7-; --- General Information Listed below are the locations and phone numbers of some of the various offices involved in providing help conducive to beginning and completing your higher education. He signed autographs and endeared himself to all who came to congratulate him and hear from him his experiences with the girls track team beginning in 1950. Coach Temple is the first coach in history to coach three U.S. Olympic women’s track and field teams, 1960,1964, and 1980. He has served as a member of the United States Olympic Committee for the past five Olympics (1960, 1964, 1968, 1972, 1976, and 1980). The library staff prepared displays on two floors of the library from materials graciously loaned by Coach Temple's wife, Charlie B. The displays included trophies, plaques, medals and numerous photographs and records of Coach Temple and the Tigerbelles. An attempt was made to create an atmosphere of an Olympiad on the first floor of the library. Large flags stood on pedestals and the Olympic flag designed and created by Deloris Harris hung from the ceiling. Small flags and a globe of the world were used for the centerpiece on the refreshment table. As the official student newspaper, whose motto is “a measure of student opinion, the 1979-80 edition of the METER reached a new horizon. Under the editorship of Shelton R. Tucker, the METER became a weekly newspaper and during this same period produced a record setting 22 editions. With a circulation of 10,000 copies, the METER also produced its largest issue which consisted of 20 pages. A venture into the area of marketing generated $4,000 in advertisements. This year’s METER staff, which consisted of 30 members, proved to be one of the most creative staffs in TSU’s history. Through such features as: Dear Debbie, Students Are Talking About, Sports-Players of the Week, JUST FOR LAUGHS, Tiger Pin-Up, and special columns such as Essien’s Outlook and Rod Spann’s Album Review, the METER not only proved to be informative but provided enjoyable reading material. The 1979-80 edition of the METER established itself as an integral part of TSU as well as the Nashville community in “Putting It All Together.” Slid ton R. Organizations Teresa and Clarissa Cuytoo Secretaries Lenorn Catron Special Consultant Sabrina Peters and Karen Terry Layout Director LETTER FROM THE STAFF Time brings about change and Tennessee State University has undergone changes as well. One of the biggest changes was that of the TSU-UTN merger. Another change that not only affected TSU, but the Nation as well was the Iranian Crisis. Other changes at TSU—The University is in the process of finishing its new Convocation Center. It should be open for use during the fall of 1980. The 1980 class will be the first class to graduate after the merger of TSU-UTN. When the merger came to TSU, so did a new process of registering for classes. The students said goodbye to the days of running from place to place looking for a seat card for a particular class. Along with these changes came the staff of the 1980 TENNESSEAN. Like any other group or organization, we started with many but ended up with a smaller number of students. This Tennessean holds not only memories of days gone by but days to come. For the staff it holds success, stress, pain, and happiness of the past, present and future. As you flip through these pages years from now, we hope the memories you once shared still remain. The 1980 Staff would like to thank each and everyone who helped with this book, especially our advisor, Mrs. Mary Vowels, (we love you), and John Cross who devoted lots and lots and lots of his time to taking and developing pictures. And thanks to the whole TSU Family because YOU are the TENNESSEAN.
