The 1977 football season was the first year that TSU was recognized as a member of Division I in the National Collegiate Athleti Association. A surprising but won- derful statistic was also found out this year e TSU has the best 11-year record of any university in the NCAA with a record of 90 wins, 1610sses and 3 ties, making a winning percentage of .840. This outranks such schools as Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State, Oklahoma, Southern California and Alabama. The TSU Tigers were also fortunate to have plenty of size this year, as in past years, with the offensive line averaging 234 pounds and the defensive line averaging 244 pounds, this line being the number one defense in the nation. The Tigers had a lot of dept with 33 letter- rnen returning and many promiSing freshmen. Next year's team promises to be just as good, if not better, and who knows, maybe even a bowl game e of course the Rose Bowl! Down, Setl Weire number . .. 209 8 WIN wjmm'a'I-w' . ', - W? TSU's first year in Division One did not go unnoticed. TSUis defense allowed only 9.1 points per game for a 8-1- L '1 season record, which was the best defensive record in the nation. Defensive coordinator Joe Gilliam is one of the seldom publicized coaches, but he is known in the Pro ranks for turning out the finished product the N.F.L. is looking for.
