Slgma prade CAMPUS PEACH BLOSSOMS CAPTURE ESSEElS FANC Research begun seven years ago by Professor of Agriculture, Dr. Neal McAIpin. has resulted in the development of several varieties of peach trees suitable to the needs of the back yard gardener. Dr. McAl- pin's breeding program, which he has car- ried on in a 14-acre experimental plot on the University farm, has produced hardy smaller trees with large fruit and beautiful double blossoms requiring minimum care. Stock obtained from Dr. McAlpin will be grafted by nurserymen this summer and young peach trees will be available to the public next spring. In the meantime. the campus peach blossoms are a conversa- tion piece capturing the fancy of Tennes- see farmers, home gardeners, sight see-ers and photographers. Birmingham. On national television. before a capacity crowd at Roberts Stadium the Big Blue ended one of the most exciting seasons in the school's modern history. Playing one of the toughest small college schedules in the nation, the Tigers ended their regular season with an amazing 17-7 record Included on the 1969-70 slate were such powers as Carson-Newman, NAIA Champs Kentucky State defending NCAA champions Kentucky Wesleyan. McClain, the juniorsharpshooter from Nashville's Pearl High School. had plenty of support from sophomore sensation Lloyd Neal and junior standout Ron Dorsey. While the trio mentioned car- ried the bulk of the scoring load, Robert Mathis and Charles Moorman rounded out the starting five with their superb defensive play. Supporting the starting unit were AI Alexander, Larry Harris, Claude Grant. Jerome Lee. Willie Fisher. and Jethro Brown, Highlighting the season was the NCAA South Re- gional championship game between the Big Blue and defending 1969 NCAA king-ptn Kentucky Wesleyan College at Owensboro, Kentucky. The Diamond tigers opened the 1969-70 under the leadership of a new head mentor, Hylon Adams and hampered by rain in the early stages of competition. The Tigers' first outing. a home game facing Mem- phis' LeMoyne Coliege. was rained out. A week later. the Tigers journeyed to Alabama for a game against Tuskegee Institute, a game stopped after seven in- nings, because of rain, while Tuskegee was ahead 1-01 The next two outings, a March 21 game facing Mont- gomeryts Alabama State and a March 23 confrontation of Huntsville's Alabama A. and M. were both rained out and the Tigers hustled back to their home state with everything dampened but their spirits. for a March 31 show-down with Murfreesboro's Middle Tennessee State Raiders. Still on the road. the Tigers split a dou- bIe-header with the Raiders, winning the first game 2-1 and dropping the second to MTSU 4-2. With the arrival of April tthe rainy monthi and back at home, the Tigers' scheduled April 1 game with Co- lumbia State College, was promptly rained out. Of the remaining games, the Tigers had the May 1 game against David Lipscomb cancelled by precipitation and two games with Mississippi's Jackson State College cancelled for other reasons. Through May 9. the Tigers had a won-lost record of 5-7 with five games left to play, four of them at home. TEMPLE ttPLUS,, AND TRACK Quietly, without fanfare like the manner of its incep- tion, the magazine NASHVILLE died the only death a publication would know with its last April issue. In that issue the sweat, toil, glory and success of Coach Ed Temple's 20 years at the Tigerbelle helm was high- lighted in the article, ttTwo Nashville Pluses . This has been the poorest season for my freshmen in the two decades I've been coaching, Coach Temple ventured following some momentary reflecting. Temple's dismal cryptic summation does not stand up on first inspection of the record. Last season, as they have for the past 15 years, the talented Tigerbelles won the Amateur Athletic Association's national out- door Women's Track and Field team championship. Individual AAU champions Madeline Manning and Eleanor Montgomery reigned in the haIf-mile and the high jump, and Iris Davis and Martha Watson grabbed second in the century-yard dash and the long jump while both of Templels 880 yard and 440 yard quartets romped across the finish line first. securing the Tiger- belles' 13th Outdoor Championship in 15 years. Opening the indoor season, the Tigerbelle perform- ances followed the quick ups and downs like a yo-yo on a string. Spurred by the biggest victory in her entire cinder- path career. Pompano Beach. Florida-born Davis latched on to second place hardware in the indoor half-century finals. Coed Davis, last summer. in the America vs Europe Games in London upset Los An- geles' Barbara Ferrell in the century meter dash which established the little Mexico City-staged Olympic team member as one of the leading feminine sprinters in the world. Hiris Es the bright spot on our team, Temple offered. She has done very well in Canada. in the Louisville- staged Mason-Dixon Games, at the Dogwood ,Relays and at Quantico Relays Temple also had praise for sprinter Mattline Render and long jumper Martha Watson but felt that, These are lean years for us. Temple concluded, We lost Manning right after the indoor season started and that was a blow. Temple lost Olympic gold medalist and world record holder Manning to the lush life of love, and with her loss went his chances for fieEding an 880 relay team because Manning ran the quarter-mile anchor leg. The faultless flow precision-type baton exchanges is the hallmark of a Temple-coached relay team. They are so because the veteran cindercutie coach adopted the quartet race as his special thing. And of all of the cutting things like dropping his third indoor Womenls team championship at New York last March, none have hit Coach Temple as hard as repeatedly losing the quarter-mile foursome run; HI think we are going to have to change our philoso- phy and start building on individual performances rather than looking for team championships, Temple explored. Along those lines Temples little-heard-from men's thinclad trio have begun to carve headlines for them- selves Track Coach Ed Temple In the State College meet, that included all of the state supported schools except the University of Ten- nessee and Memphis State, Templets men won the 120 high hurdles, the high jump and the quarter-mile dash which puts the Jefferson Street sprinters at the top of the heap for competition among Ohio Valley confer- ence collegesr Senior T. J. Johnson's copping of the 120 highs and taking second in both the 100 and 220 yard dashes. sophomore Larry Jackson's bossing the 440 and Al- exia Simmonsl towering in the high jump against the other state college sprinters were the performances that led Temple to exclaim that the men's Big Blue cinder program was on its way up. 'The Ohio Valley is our class of competition, Tem- ple explained. Male participants numbered 1,769. forming 76 teams. involving 217 contests, while female participants num- bered 435, forming 44 teams, involving 102 contests. In addition to intramurals activities. drawing a great deal of interest this school year were the monthly co-recreationai evenings during which male and female faculty, staff and students participated in team and indix'riduai sports activities without the separation of the sexes.
