Each unworthy thought or deed clouds its surface. The aim of every true and loyal student should be to keepit spot- less and bright, an outward symbol of the high ideals that our Alma Mater holds for each of her sons and daughters. The shield comes down to us today with years of tra- dition that have built Tennessee High School. The axes and rods of ancient Rome are symbols of effort, power, and strength, necessary to enforce the laws in the cause ofjustice, right, and high ideals. As sym- bols of our school, they represent the constant willingness that must be the part of every student, to see that the honor of the shield is kept forever shining and bright. Therefore, we, the students of Tenn- essee High School are honor-bound to hold these symbols dear to our hearts. 6 TABLE OF CONTE TS ' 'iff uf! hy 5.4-5 Jill? Em. Winning ten of eleven games--the City Championship--- the Exchange Bowl in Kingsport---the 1959 team displayed all the qualities of great athletes. Not only were they outstanding as athletes, they were gentlemen and scholars as well. Their team spirit, their attitude both on and off the field was such that the school and community could be very proud to be represented by this fine group. They set standards which future teams may well strive to match. Individual honors were garnered by Randy Robinett and Joe Garrett who were selected on the All-State first and second team respectively. Howard Garrett was chosen the most valuable player and his brother Joe came in for a second honor when he won the coveted King Trophy. The 59 team won the Big Seven, the District, the Regional Championships and placed fourth in the State Tournament. Coach Basham and the 59 squad traveled several hundred miles back and forth between Bristol and Knoxville to take part in the state tourney. Behind the great pitching of Whitey Pullen and Bill Green the team expects to go all the way in the 1960 season. This was the first year that games were played on the new field at Haynes- field. In this season the batting power of Walter Wolfe and Stan Kitzmiller, along with the relief hurling of Lester Byington, is expected to place the Vi- kings high in the state standings. From the moment we entered the portals of our Alma Mater this year, we were looking forward to the coming events. We had so much to do and only one small year in which to accomplish our tasks. We were reunited with our old friends and made many new ones. From all of these we chose the officers who were to be the leaders of our class. Football season proved to be the best yet. The team that we, as upperclassmen, cheered to victory won 10 of 11 games--the most important one, the V. T. game, ending 34 to 0 for the victorious Vikings. The unsurmountable joy we experienced with the receiving of our garnet class rings could not be put into words. We now had something tangible to prove that we were really upperclassmen. The highly anticipated week known as Junior Week finally confronted us. At this time, we were even more important than the seniors! As an end to this glorious 7-day adventure, we presented Annie Get Your Gun on Friday night and danced until the wee hours on Saturday at our prom, enchantingly decorated in baby blue and white, our class colors. When the climax to our junior year finally came, we did not fully realize it amid all the excitement of Class Night. After we had taken the seniors' places on the stage, we suddenly realized with pride that we were now the senior class. S, ,1 Jean Goode admires Laney Credlds garnet class ring. The Class Ring of 1925 compared to the 1961 Class Ring. In 1934 'the name Vikings was selected for our athletic Vl '! ' ima -ill riors. This created a great need for a uniform class ring. Cl les J. Hawkins, a student at Tennessee High, designed the pre class ring which was first worn by the class of 1936. In a letter to the editors of the 1957 Cadmea. Mr. Hawl writes: The old school building was chosen for historical and se mental reasons' its silhouette to always remind us of fond f 1, , cherished memories in school days. and fighting spirit of our teams and scans the horizon for his-Zig! The Viking standing in the bow of his ship symbolizes the v f fields of conquest and endeavor. The size and ruggedness o ring depicts the strength and growth both physically and ment Our identification encircling the stone adds a final touch for be and richness of character. A f From Class Night ceremonies we get the following ideas: V lf The axes and rods symbolize the effort, power, and strem necessary to enforce the laws for the cause of justice, right high ideals. ns' R Qhvxl The shield stands for the honor of the school. The four-leaf clovers are symbols to honor the first clas wear the ring with the present design. They are also token luck for the seniors graduating to new realms of life. The Class of 1961 established the tradition of choosing the g net as the stone for the Class Ring. 151 V. 1 Q, '14 1 if ., v ' , 7 Wu! ' U l , 1 . , ,av W . . .
