Why We Should Kuy Konds and Keep Wheas In a faraway foxhole on a cold rainy day, a boy crouched. He could not be sure that the battle was over yet. It seemed hours until he heard footsteps. Holding tight to his car- bine, he ventured to take a peep. Good! It was a friend. The battle was over and the vic- tory won. Johnny had been lucky. Not one scratch when many had not lived through it. Now he took out of his rain-soaked pocket a billfold, containing the pictures of Mary, his girl; Mom; and Jake, his little pup. He took shelter in a damp tent where fatigue suddenly overcame him, but he could rest now. Sleep soon came to this tired boy. A smile was on his face as he lay there with thoughts, not of the horrible battle he had just been through, but of his girl, his mother, and Jake. Rest —what a wonderful word to this tired American! In his mixed dreams that soon came, one in particular took sudden form. Across the broad span of ocean that separated him from those he loved, Johnny could see the beginning of a bridge. Running to the water’s edge, he strained his eyes to see and be sure. Yes, there it was with people working frantically on it. As time went on and the bridge grew closer, Johnny could see Mary and Mom carrying beams to men of his hometown who were build- ing the bridge. There was Uncle Tom, Mr. Harris, Joe Brown, Ben Smith—all of his friends— working, sweating, praying that the bridge could soon be finished. To Johnny it seemed an eternity before he could actually touch the bridge. At last he walked out upon it to meet Mary, Mom, Jake, and all the rest! How could he ever thank them enough for making his return possible! Suddenly they came to a point where a piece of the bridge was missing. Frantically he asked why. Mary replied, ‘That was the part old Mr. Simpson loaned. He must have de- cided he wanted it back.” Are you the Mr. Simpson of our town? Would you take away a part of the bridge that is being built to bring our boys back home? Of course not, if you could help it, but that is just what you are doing every time you cash ina bond this late in the game. Remember that when you invest your money in bonds and stamps, you are building bridges to bring our boys back home. It is a great responsibility, but still it is a privilege. Surely the G. I. Joes are thanking you in their hearts for what you have done. But this is no time to cash in a bond and tear to pieces the bridges already built. Buy until it hurts. This is the unselfish thing to do. This is the American thing to do! Smith ‘came’ to B. TH. Satter spending eight years as head coach at Tucumcari, New Mexico. He was formerly coach at Springfield High, Springfield, Tenn., and at Peabody Demon- stration School at Nashville, and at Tennessee Poly- technic Institute for eleven years. Coach Smith completed high school and three years of college work at Middle Tennessee State Teacher's College where he participated in an all- round sports program which included football, bas- ketball, baseball, track, and tennis. He then went to Vanderbilt University and played on an undefeated football team which won the southern championship that year. He completed his college work at Peabody where he received his B.S. and M.A. degrees. His first term at Tennessee High has proved that the judgment of the student body at his college was very sound because they voted him the best all- round athlete in college. COACH TYREE Coach George Tyree came to captain the Tennes- see High Vikings after coaching all sports at Fayette County High School for sixteen years. The Coach started on his athletic career at Daw- son High School, Dawson, Texas, where he partici- pated in all sports and served as captain of the foot ball team in his senior year. After high school Mr. Tyree went on to Bethel College at Bethel, Tenn., and further pursued his athletic inclinations by playing four years of foot ball and baseball, serving another year as captain cf the football team, and saw two years of active service on the basketball squad. Bethel College showed their confidence and admiration for his abil- ity by voting him the best all-round athlete of '26-'27. Coach Tyree came to B. T. H. S. alter we had been without football for a year and has done a splendid job of starting the Vikings to roll again. We all sincerely hope he will be with us at least as long as he was in his first coaching position. 1944 Captains Heading the 1944 edition of the Tennessee Viking football team were two stalwart and rugged gridsters, Captain Lynn Galloway and Co-Captain Jim Crockett. Captain Galloway's superb blocking from his block- ing back position paved the way or many Viking touch- downs, while Co-Captain Crockett was one of the main- stays in the Viking forward wall. Both of these players re- ceived the honor of being placed on the All-City team. Sept. 22—Invading the Trail of the Lonesome Pine the Tennessee Vikings scored their first vic- tory of the season by edging out the Big Stone Gap Buccaneers, 12-7. Oct. 6—In their second engagement with the Johnson City Hilltoppers, Gene Felty’s toe slipped and the Vikings dropped another heart-breaker by being on the short end of a 7-0 score. Oct. 13--The Tennessee Gridsters waded through the muck and mire of a rain-soaked grid- iron to a 15-6 victory over the fighting Morristown eleven. Oct. 21—Outclassed by the Betsy Cyclones, probably the best team in upper East Tennessee, the Vikings returned from Elizabethton on the short end of a 19-6 score. Oct. 26—Emerging victorious for the first time in Big Five competition, the home team played one of their best ball games of the season to overwhelm the Erwin Blue Devils in Municipal Stadium to the tune of 25-7. Nov. 3—Kingsport’s vaunted, near irresistible force, met an immovable object, Tenness ee's line, in Municipal Stadium and the Vikings carried off a 12-0 victory after eleven years of vain attempts. We love that team!! Nov. 10—The whistle blew, the orange-clad Virginians kicked off, Captain Lynn Galloway of the Vikings tucked the ball under his arm and raced 73 yards for a touchdown. Thus the Vikings got under way toward scoring a lop-sided 40-0 win over the bitter cross-town rivals, the Virginia Bearcats, in the traditional classic of the year. Highlight of the season was the well-earned capture of the city crown as the Vikings defeated the Virginians two out of three well-played and closely-contested ball games, with the third game, which the Vikings won, 29-22, deciding the series. The Bearcats won 17 games and lost only two, both to the Vikings, which gives an indication of how the home team stacked up against Southwest Virginia competition.
