An American TBE, Tlying low, bursT inTo huge Tlames and crashed inTo The sea. American arTillery ashore de- posiTed a paTTern oT explosions in The area souTh oT The Town, shiTTing consTanTly To cover The enTire area. The sTeady pounding oT The bluTTs and specified Tar- geTs conTinued all day unTil I73l when The ship secured. The Tollowing day again saw The TENNESSEE cover- ing The advancing oT Marines Trom Tinian Town To a poinT on The souThern Tip oT The island, where The Japanese Troops were cornered and where many of Them Tound The only way ouT was by suicide. AT 0830, The TENNESSEE was able To halT Tiring and This compleTed The operaTion as Tar as The ship was concerned.
