His deTermined answer To BriTain's CapTain Pearson, I have noT yeT begun To TighT, in The vicTory oT The BON HOMME RICHARD over The SERAPIS in I779, gave our Navy iTs TirsT biT oT glorious TradiTion. And a Tew years laTer, anoTher immorTal was added To The Navy's lisT, when CapTain James Lawrence aboard The CHESAPEAKE meT The BriTish ship SHANNON oTT BosTon in The War oT l8l2. Unprepared and undermanned, CapTain Lawrence's CHESAPEAKE was shaTTered. The CapTain's dying words, Don'T give up The ship, seT a sTandard oT devoTion Trom which The UniTed STaTes Navy has never wavered. There was CapTain Isaac Hull, in command oT The CONSTITUTION, who broughT his ship wiThin pisToI range oT The BriTish ship GUERRIERE, Turned calmly To his crew and said, Now, boys, pour iT inTo Them. The Trugal CapTain wanTed every shoT To counT, and They did. OuT oT acTion aT The TirsT blasT, The GUERRIERE sank wiThin The hour. Years oT peace passed by The naTion, in which many greaT men added To The glorious TradiTion begun in The sTruggle Tor exisTence. The age oT sTeeI and sTeam came To The sea and coIorTul sailing ships gave way To iron monsTers, marking The beginning oT our modern Navy. The paTTern was seT in The Civil War encounTer oT The Union MONITOR and The Con- Tederacy's MERRIMAC. The ironclad ships Tired aT each oTher Tor Tive hours, neiTher doing harm To her enemy. WiTh consTrucTion oT The sTeeI vessels DOLPHIN and ATLANTA in I888, They enTered The lisT againsT The poTenT Spanish TIeeT. In The war wiTh Spain, anoTher greaT chapTer in Naval hisTory was wriTTen. Commodore Dewey daringly led his squadron pasT hisToric Corregidor, capTuring The enTire Spanish PaciTic Torces. To The Navy, Tell The Task oT TransporTing hundreds oT Thousands oT American soldiers To Europe, as The FirsT World War engulfed ThaT conTinenT. A quarTer-cenTury oT uneasy peace Tollowed beTore The world again rocked To The deaTh sTruggles oT mighTy armies. War came To The PaciTic and The UniTed STaTes December 7, I94I. From The wreckage and blood oT Pearl Harbor, sprang The mighTiesT naval Torce The world has ever seen. Navy men Today may noT be sure oT pasT naval hisTory, buT by Their courage and Their sacriTice, They have per- sonally recorded many chapTers, Their own memorial oT nearly Tour years oT war. They can never TorgeT Those biTTer, early monThs when, wiTh so liTTle, There was so much To be done. A swaggering, successTul enemy roamed The vasT PaciTic, and There was liTTle we could do To impede him. Nazi submarine packs prowled The rough ATlanTic waTers, Taking Their deadly Toll oT Allied ships. IT was Then The indusTrial mighT oT our naTion proved iTselT as shipyards, slowly aT TirsT, began producTion oT The Thousands oT ships which we musT have. The close oT I943 saw ship aTTer ship, launched wiTh a rapidiTy which sTarTled The world. From every walk oT liTe came The men who would sail and TighT The ships. The real hisTory oT The Navy is The sTory oT The oTTicers and men who TighT The ships. Americans all-a buTcher, who sTudied elecTriciTy and kepT complicaTed gunnery conTrol equipmenT in The TinesT condiTiong a lawyer, a baker, cooks, docTors, newspapermen and all The oThers, eager and quick To learn. IvlasTering The sTrange and inTricaTe equipmenT oT Their ships, They carried The TighT To The enemy, wherever he could be Tound. IT was The old Navy regular, who worried and TreTTed wiTh green men, Teaching Them, driving, shouTing, and even pampering Them inTo becoming in The shorT alloTTed Time, dependable crew members who could handle Their iobs like veTerans. Navy liTe was never soTT, and The regulars Toughened recruiTs To Take The sTrange new liTe aTloaT and To meeT every conTingency. Each recruiT Tound his own parTicular hell, some serving in climaTes so hoT every shred oT cloThing dripped wiTh perspiraTion as he wresTled wiTh heavy supplies and loaded ammuniTion beTween air aTTacks. OThers sailed inTo The Toul weaTher oT The NorTh ATlanTic, Tacing The driving snow, sleeT and ice unTil he was numb wiTh The biTTer cold. There were long, TerriTying hours oT suspense as submarine packs dodged in and ouT oT heavily- Iaden convoys and American desTroyers danced and rolled as They chased The wolves circling The huddled, slowly moving ships. ' To The Navy's lisT oT greaT leaders were added The names oT men, who only a Tew shorT years beTore were iunior oTTicers, Tollowing The Tedious rouTine oT peaceTime Navy liTe. When The Time came Tor Them To assume command oT vasT Torces, They were ready. The long years oT poring over Tomes oT naval lore, TacTics, sTraTegy, IogisTics and operaTions paid dividends in vicTories Tor American sea power. Naval hisTorians will Tind The niches Tor These men, buT Those who served under Them know Their greaTness, abiIiTy, daring and resourcefulness. They know, Trom experience, The hundreds oT sTories oT Their exploiTs, Their humaneness and love oT The men who served under Them. These oTIicers and men have won a vicTory ThaT is sweeT because oT The promise oT peace Tor all men. ThaT This may be a lasTing peace is The TervenT prayer oT all. BUT, unTil iT is clear ThaT swords have been pounded inTo plowshares. our Navy will conTinue To be This naTion's TirsT line oT deTense. 'A' ir 'k E 13 Wi 5' TF I il D :AI ?
