S A ff ' Maybe it was the gold spitoon, or the new jerseys, but this year's Tiger eleven turned in some spectacular games for the glory of Tenafly. Coach George Clark whipped up a bunch of husky lads whom he hardly knew, into a much improved ball club over recent years. We started our season with a win over Bergenfield l2-O and then lost the next one to St. Cecilia by the same score. The Ridgefield Park game opened our N. N. J. l. L. schedule. Captain Tony Sposa had a holiday and walked away with two touchdowns behind the able blocking of Reno Denese and Eddy Kurtz. Spooks Hatten tore away for another tally to make it l8-6 when the final gun went off. We walked into a little trouble with Englewood and found ourselves behind l8-O before Paul Wittreich could rack up 6 points. The Maroons had trouble getting by Bob Burdette and Al Wasburg so they took to wide end runs for their long gains. Final score, Englewood l8, Tenafly. 7. The heart breaker of the season was the one we lost to the Bulldogs. Hatten ran for our only touchdown in the fourth play of the game, but Rutherford tripped us l2-6. Who can forget the Hackensack game? The Tigers upset a highly favored Comet team to the tune of 28-l4. ln the first few minutes Flash Wittreich sprouted wings and galloped over the goal line twice in the first half. Al Swanson must have borrowed Paul's wings, because a little later he bounced off every player on Hackensack's team to score twice in the last quarter. Jack Francisco put on a drop kicking performance as he made four for four. We ran into a little trouble with Leonia and lost 28-O. N0oks Sposa and Charlie Hayes played an unu- sually good game in this tilt. The two lrishmen, Murphy and Zurlini, along with the rest of the team tried to stop the Teaneck High- waymen, but lost l9-6, with Deerfoot Swanson again doing the scoring honors. On the last and most memorable game Tenafly romped over a greatly favored Cliffside Park team for their second major upset of the season. On the kick-off in the second half, the most spectacular play of the season took place. Swanson grabbed the ball on the 20 and started across the field only to reverse the ball to Hatten, who struck off for pay dirt to the bewilderment of the opposing players. Al Swanson, Al Smith, and Tony Sposa all contributed touchdowns as we crushed Cliffside 25-O. The fellows ended the season with a four win and five lose record with Coach Meotti's immortal quotation still ringing in their ears- You say you've had enough??? Okay, take a lap!ll TIGER ELEVEN ' Sposa, Captain, Paul Wittreich. 1213 P f COACH CLARK Football, Baseball L Q f mv 'll COACH PARMER CGA Basketball, Baseball Tre iH YOCKER5 C , Basketball l K ' ,5 A . :ffl f .,,. , v.,f,, .ma T1 G' f mgwf 5' ra a eil ig' lag F X Za lu' , Q l 9 2? Of the .first team only three members were seniors, a set-up L is T , K a is ,Q Q 3 QR? is time Henry stopped the opposition from what seemed like a sure goal, Another top player on the squad was Colin Tait, who played the first half of the season at half back and then moved up to center forward. The team, formed around the nucleus of Witt, Welter and Tait, fellows who played every minute of the eight games, consisted of Witt at goal, Bokese and Shaet at fullbacks, and Claxton, Welter, West, who filled in along the halfback line. Keck and Nelson on the wings, Sproul and Swanson at the insides and Tait at center forward made up the line. John Ackerman was team manager, rounding out a well formed team. The best played game of the year was on a muddy November 3, when the Tigers clashed with a powerful Englewood eleven and not only held the Maroons to no goals but went on to outplay them and score a goal, only to have it called back on a technical rule, We had our bad day on October 20, when the Hackensack Comets ran over us by a score of 6-O. So despite the mediocre record and with nine returning veterans, the i949 soccer team should be in the thick of the fight all the way. B The baseball team, bolstered this season by such veterans as Bochese, Sposa, Maxwell, Thomas, Barretta, Smith, and Desmond, was faced with the problem of bettering their third place position of last year. if : , . ,f 1' Sligilllwgll 3 I I tl Give it t XA xiel Swish! A pass to Smitty and, oopsl Ah, that's better . . . and we opened our season ith a decisive victory over St. Cecelia. Under the new coaching of Bill Parmer the Tigers blossomed into a team - enafly hasn't witnessed for a long time. Opening the league season against Englewood, we fought to a draw and then lost by a score of 44-40 in followed that up with a 44-4O decision over Ridgefield Park. In this game Maxwell had his night and broke the N overtime. Against the much favored Comets we broke our 37 game mystical jinx, defeating them 55-43. We N. N. J. I. L. foul shooting record by one point, giving him a total of I2 fouls made for a new record. The next seven games we . . . and there goes Benedict in for a driving lay-up and Reno taps the rebound in. Do you remember those terrific hook shots of Reno's and Big Smitty retrieving them off the backboards and-oh my-complications-he dropped it again. TIME IN-and we proceeded to play a greatly improved brand of ball only to lose to Teaneck, Rutherford, and Leonia by one, two, and two points, respectively. With the rest of the ball club consisting of Agresti, Engle, Beaumont, and Graf we ended the season with 7 won and I3 lost, losing our last game to the Firemen by 46-45. The Tigers entered the State Tournament, defeated Ridgefield Park and then were eliminated in the sec- tional quarterfinals by Lodi. Congratulations for his record breaking I2 points in foul shooting are extended to Bob Maxwell, our outstanding player of the season, who not only took scoring honors in the N. N. J. I. L. fight, but also took first place honors on the League and All-County teams. The freshmen team is also congratulated for its excellent season under the fine tutelage of Coach Meotti and we sincerely hope that 4.1 their future teams will make as fine a showing in the J. H. Tourna- ment as they did. 69 iv-Y I ,aff M' ' , Y NM :si V' 1 J. v. socCER E YQ- 5 , -W UI'- W I J. v. FOOTBALL 4' J , .Q ,J V el Yu Z ff ! X 'djgjf ' J T 1 el J. v. Last year's loss of the league championship to Englewood by one point laid a good foundation for revenge by the TIGERS, Under the fine guidance of Coach Yockers, track has risen to greater importance in recent years, and has been high in the winning column. The fact that cross country track has taken a firm hold in Tenafly sports, should encourage our future harriers.
