The School of Communications and Theater was founded in 1966. and Robert R. Smith is the current dean of the school. The School of Communications and Theater includes the departments of Journalism. Radio-Television-Film, Theater, and the Speech department divisions of Rhetoric and Communication and Speech-LanguageHearmg. The Journalism department was organized as a separate department in 1927. Temple University was the first institution of higher learning in the Philadelphia area to offer a major concentration in this field. Those who have received degrees for this study now number more than 2000. The Radio-TelevisionFilm department was organized as an instructional division in Ktl. Temple became one of the first universities in the nation to offer a bachelors degree specifically in broadcasting. The department has built a tradition of leadership in both commercial and educational broadcasting. The division of Speech-Language-Hearing which also moved to the School of communi- cations and Theater in 1986. has developed over the past 30 years into one of the finest such programs in the country. Until 1931 the theater program at Temple was entirely an extracurricular activity with undergraduate groups serving as producing organizations on campus. In 1931. with the opening of Mitten Hall and its theater facilities, the University acquired its first faculty member to teach theater and develop it first formal courses. From this begining, the Theater department has become nationally known for its excellence in both its undergrad- uate and graduate programs. Academics 25

I The School of Business and Management was founded in 1918, and William C. Dunkelberg is the current dean of the school. It is the goal of the School of Business and Management to provide to its students high quality educational opportunities which are responsive to these needs. The attainment of these needs depends not only upon trainmg in a specific area but in the comprehension of the interrelation of education- al content. This is encouraged by the attitude of the instructional staff as well as by the extracurricular activities that are conducted within the school. Degrees are offered in Accounting, Economics, Finance. Health Administration, Human Resource Administration, Legal and Real Estate Studies, and Management. 24 Academics

The College of Education was founded in 1919, and Richard M. Englert is the current dean of the college. The College of Education provides its students with the best possible preservice, inservice. experience, and continuing education for educational professionals. The College of Education imparts to its students a thorough knowl- edge of subject matter and familiarity with the competencies essential to professial practice, also the development of the scientific aspect of education through the emphasis on the spirit of inquiry and research skills. Programs are offered in Art Education, Elementary Education, Special Education among many other programs. 6 Academics
