ASSISTANT DEAN FOR INSTITUTIONAL RESEARCH AND PROGRAM INTEGRITY Samuel f. Spadone, D.P.M. Assistant Dean for Institutional Research and Program Integrity School of Podiatric Medicine TEMPLE UNIVERSITY 2IS-SJS-5239 r » 2IS-S29-IM9 .vtb w-mw 'trrv Vj Dear Members of the Class of 2012: Charles Dickens (1859] began his A Tate of Two Cities with what is arguably one of the most widely recognized statements in English literature: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us. we were all going direct to heaven, we were all going direct the other way .... Docs this strike a familiar chord as you look back on the last four years? Decades from now as you contemplate your life's work. I hope you will conclude that your studies here were, indeed, the worst of times you have ever known because this means you will have been spared much that others will suffer. I also hope that you will not look back and consider the past four years to have been the best of times because each of you deserves to derive increasing satisfaction from your life’s work, or as Dickens put it, to go direct to heaven. Nearly thirty-five years have passed since George Plimpton was invited to give his (in)famous Class Day address to the 1977 graduating class at Harvard University. Mr. Plimpton’s advice to the Class was decidedly unconventional: “Stop ... Don’t go ... Go back to your rooms and unpack!” Mr. Plimpton's words were clearly informed by his satirical wit, but they no doubt resonated with the anxiety at leaving Mother Harvard to enter the “real world harbored by some soon-to-bc graduates. Some of you too may harbor doubts about finding your way in an uncertain world. Don't—you are well prepared for the challenges of the unknown. As an unidentified writer once noted, “Do not fear the winds of adversity. Remember: A kite rises against the wind rather than with it In closing, my wish for each of you is that you will boldly achieve what no podiatrist has achieved before. Live long and prosper' Sincerely, Samuel J. Spadone, D.P.M. Assistant Dean 12 Y Temple I nhersity School of Podiatric Medicine
