Spadone, D.RM. Assistant Dean for Institutional Research and Program Integrity Congratulations on attaining this milestone in your personal and professional lives. You have successfully traversed a long path that few embark upon and still fewer complete. Even as today marks the culmination of years of effort and sacrifice, it heralds the onset of even more of the same before you can truly begin to reap the rewards you deserve. I have every confidence that each of you will persevere and sooner rather than later find light at the end of the tunnel. What is this almost forgotten light? Is it a mythical thing, a Jungian archetype of our collective unconscious? I suspect for many it represents the prospect of broadening your horizons, to devoting more time and energy to personal and family lives, recreational pursuits, and more, all made possible by the end of unremitting study. You arc already far along the learning curve in this profession. By the time you complete residency training you will have progressed somewhat further. You will make still more progress, albeit incremental, along this path until you achieve board certification, but learning does not end there. You can never reach a point at which you have learned all there is to know. New knowledge and understanding arc being developed at exponentially increasing rates, far faster than any of us can assimilate. At this juncture you must transition to becoming selective learners, able to sift through the morass and keep up with that most germane to your needs and those of your patients. The ability to be selective has its foundations in your ever increasing knowledge base and it is this selectivity that will enable you to broaden your horizons as you so richly deserve, but you must continue to leant throughout your lives in order to support this ability.
