School of Podiatric Medicine TEMPLE UNIVERSITY bntitutional vl Program BgMi it SOWt PA 19107 Samue 1 J. Spadone.D.P.M. Dear Graduates of the Class of 2010: I bid you congratulations on your accomplishments and sincere wishes for success in all your future endeavors. In this vein. 1 must ask each of you a simple question Have you ever flown a kite? Bear with me a moment before concluding that I've taken a giant step off the deep end. You arc about to leave the artificial womb of academia and enter the real world. I-Ct’s take stock of that world The economy is bad The reimbursement climate for your professional services is already not what you hoped for and Medicare is rattling its sabers about an additional twenty plus percent fee cut. The profession's inclusion in Title XIX is anything but certain Docs any of this cause you anxiety? Yes, there is much uncertainty ahead and much to worry about for some, but not you. You have come a long way during the past four years and. while from day to day it may have seemed that you didn’t leant much. I assure you that you have amassed a formidable array of knowledge and skills, litis is a certainty. I know because I have been tracking your professional development since your first day on campus. You arc well prepared to embark on the next stage of your professional lives and I believe better so than most. 1 will pass along something I learned from Dr. Harvey Lemont years ago: The Chinese character for crisis also represents opportunity. As you go forward, take courage from this fact for it reflects a universal wisdom and you will do well. Oh. that bit about flying a kite. It's a thought often associated with Winston Churchill but one he actually borrowed; the original author is unknown Do not fear the winds of adversity Remember: A kite rises against the wind rather than with it. Again, congratulations and warm wishes for the future. Sincerely. Assistant Dean. Institutional Research and Program Integrity
