Esther Sue Barnes, PPM northwestern University B.S. Biomedical Engineering TUSP.M Class of 2007: Despite this country's healthcare limitations anti insurance frustrations you’ll be forced to face, and the multitude of disgruntled and ungrateful patients you'll treat throughout your career, please never loose sue of 1.) your roots, 2.) why you chose to become a physio an in the first place and 3.) the notion that, despite the time, energy, and money you’ve invested into this career, treating patients is not an entitlement, but a privilege And if w e look and listen closely enough, we can learn more from our patients than anybody. To quote my favorite “revolutionary,’’ Ernesto Che Guevara (August 20, 1969) in a speech to Medical Students “The doctor, the. medical worker, should go then to the heart of their new work, which is as a person among the masses, a person within the community. Whatever happens in the world, by always being close to the patient, by knowing his or her psychology so deeply, by being the representative of those who come near pain and relieve it, the doctor alw ays lus a very important job, a job of great responsibility in social life. Wc must then begin to erase our old concepts, of practicing chant)-, and come ever closer and even more critically to the people by practicing solidarity. We should not draw closer to the people to say: Here wc are. We come to give you the charity of our presence. to teach you with our science, to demonstrate your errors, your lack of refinement. your lack of elementary knowledge. W'c should go with an investigational teal and with a humble spirit, to learn from the great source of wisdom that is the people. Dad anti Mom: Thank you for instilling in me die values of hard work, diligence, gratitude. compassion, and respect that you so well exemplify yourselves. You’ve always encouraged me to remain an individual and true to myself when it seemed an easier path to conform, and you’ve supported me through the hard times, without judgment You've instilled in me the importance of responsibility, accountability, being true to your word, taking pride in your work, and lending a helping hand. The lessons you've taught me, mostly by example, arc invaluable and indispensable, and I cannot thank you enough for that 20 Temple School of Pocfiatric Medicine
