You are now at one of the many fulcrum that you will experience in life. This year, your life as a student ends and your life as a podiatric physician begins. It would be easy and sale for me to review your past lour yean and locus on highlight of your student life. But the unfortunate reality i that the highlights that I would choose would not be the same ones that you remember. My highlights relate to the integration of the school, the uiitiation of our clinic expansion, or the development of new distance learning techniques. Your highlights will be the friends that you made, the first surgery that you completed, or the late night cramming session m which you realized that there is a relationship between academia and professional performance. I am going to choose the more difficult task; that t predicting your future. When you open this book In ten years. I predict that you will be well on your way to a happy and successful life. You wdl be In practice. Your loans will be amortizing. You most probably will have married, or found a partner. You may have children, and those children will be on the verge of taking you to soccer games. Halloween tours and birthday parties. A good percentage of you will be solo practitioners, but the majority of you will be in practice with other podiatrist or other doctors In ten years, the crises that we face today win all be solved, but others will have taken their place. The single constant that wr team to deal with is crisis confrontation. Managed care will still be with us, HMO1 will look a lot more like today's PPO's. MEDICARE will be expanded. Just because of the development of new techniques and the arrtral of the baby boom generation. Although I doubt that there will be a single payer system. 1 predict that there will be ahnoat universal healthcare available in some form The question that I cannot answer now, is what type of man or woman will you be in ten year . Here it what 1 want the answer to be. I want you. first lo be a man or woman with a strong family. Your parent , siblings, spouse and children will be the center of your strength and your life Next, I want you to be up (o date, and proficient in your practice. Every patient that you see is no! only treated by you. they ore treated by the profession of podiatry. Today, you become that profession. Your skill not only elevates you. it elevates your chosen profession. These are the skills that we have given you. I predict that you wtU use them, improve upon them, and be rewarded by them. Thank you foe your years here. John Mattiacci, DPM Dean Dr. Mattiacci
