6 Kieran T. Mahan, D.P.M. Vice President For Academic Affairs And Dean Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine KIERAN T MAHAN. OPM . FACES WCI rvivctxr KM AOOtMlC MIAMI AAC WAX TO THE CLASS Of 1991 Congratulations on your graduation. To aach of you, 1 know thia event signals a completion, the culmination of your four years at PCPM. But now, more than aver, graduation with tha professional degree is merely the first of many continuing steps in your career. A profession like ours requires you to commit yourself to life -long learning: through residencies, preceptorships, continuing education programs, the literature, and professional dialogue with your colleagues. Satisfaction with doing things the same way they have always been done is a formula for mediocrity. He have an obligation to our patients, our profession and ourselves, to constantly strive to improve our knowledge and techniques. On your graduation day you will take a solemn oath to care for your patients in an ethical and conscientious manner. In many ways, you have yet to understand the true meaning of the oath you will be taking. The patients that you have seen and taken care of during your years at PCPM have always been someone else's patients. In your residency, you will also not have the full responsibility for the patients you work with. As you begin practice however, the weight of that responsibility will quickly fall upon you. You will be facod with many ethical decisions. The manner in which you resolve these issue must always be predicated upon doing what is best for the patient. The rewards of this profession are many, but the most important ones are the satisfaction you will receive from healing another person, and the lasting relationships that you will develop with your patients and colleagues. Congratulations and welcome to our profession. Fraternally EIGHTH AT RACE STREET • PHILADELPHIA. PA 19107 • 21S-O29-OT0Q mmm

You are also about to enter a career of life-long loarning which will require making your graduation a launching pad toward a commitment for continuing education. without question, you are better trained podiatric physicians at an earlier stage in your careers than your predecessors. With that training, howevor, you must maintain an inquisitiveness and sense of observation that leads to tho discovery and craation of new knowledge. More than just the delivory of podiatric modical services, each of you has the obligation to contribute to your profession.
