I want to congratulate each of you on the successful completion of a demanding four year educational experience. You have been prepared to enter a rewarding profession and begin a career of providing competent and compassionate podiatric care to those In need. You are also about to enter a career of lifelong learning which will require making your graduation a launching pad toward a conroitment for continuing education. Without question, you are better trained podiatric physicians at an earlier stage In your careers than your predecessors. With that training, however, you must maintain an inquisitiveness and sense of observation that leads to the discovery and creation of new knowledge. More than just the delivery of podiatric medical services, each of you has the obligation to contribute to your profession, not just exploit it. You owe it to your forebearers and your successors who have made and will make their contributions to the relief of pain and cure of disease. The faculty and I wish you the pleasure and rewards attending the practice of podiatric medicine. You have earned it and we are proud to welcome you as colleagues. You arrived so full of coraitisent and cnthualas«- and you have weathered the teats of tine and ntroa so wall. It really does not seen' tine for you to join the Illustrious list of those who prccodod you in tho graduation march at the Academy of Music. 1 will not be with you, your family and friends on this wonderful day physically, but I will cortalnly be with you in spirit. 1 know how hard you have worked to reach this goal successfully. Your achievement of the D.P.M. Is a true accomplishment. It was not easily obtained, but nothing of great value is ever reached without frustration, hard work, much sacrifice and dedication. You have demonstrated these qualities over tho past four years. You worked, you found ways of caring, and you gavo so very ouch back to us. You have now met the challenges of academic and clinical experience. National boards, externships, and finally, the run for the residency, while keeping your sense of perspective and wit in tact. You have developed personal and professional relationships! some have begun families sod watched them grow. You have worried about grades, groceries, and your gross national dobt! During all this you never failed to sharo ur.seTT-ishly your tine and talents with us. You set goals and objectives which made PCPK and all of us better. It is my hope that, in addition to the vast knowledge you have gained, you also have found new dimensions added to your understanding and to your fond memories. Certainly, as Kahili Gibran said, ”. . . knowledge is your crown and understanding is your staff; and, when they are with you. you can possess no greater treasures.' Tho friends you have made, the experiences you have shared, have not only added to your llfo, but have surely enlarged our horizon . Hopefully, the knowledge and understanding will help you always to rise above human weaknesses and lead your fellow nan. 1 am proud to have had the opportunity to work with you for the past thrco-and-one-half years; the good timos will long be ronembered, and the stimulating differences and discussions were valuable.
