Your achievement of the D.P.M. Is a true accomplishment. It was not easily obtained, but nothing of great value is ever reached without frustration, hard work, much sacrifice and dedication. You have demonstrated these qualities over tho past four years. You worked, you found ways of caring, and you gavo so very ouch back to us. You have now met the challenges of academic and clinical experience. National boards, externships, and finally, the run for the residency, while keeping your sense of perspective and wit in tact. You have developed personal and professional relationships! some have begun families sod watched them grow. You have worried about grades, groceries, and your gross national dobt! During all this you never failed to sharo ur.seTT-ishly your tine and talents with us. You set goals and objectives which made PCPK and all of us better. It is my hope that, in addition to the vast knowledge you have gained, you also have found new dimensions added to your understanding and to your fond memories. Tho friends you have made, the experiences you have shared, have not only added to your llfo, but have surely enlarged our horizon . Cordially, ‘■rfanico A. A fantco A. Perguson, Ph.O. vice President for Student Affairs PENNSYLVANIA COLLEGE OF PODIATRIC MEDICINE tICHTH Af RACE STREET PHIlAOEl RHIA. PENNSYLVANIA I9I0T • |JI5 Dcpjnmtn: of Academic Affairs lifting To The Class Of 1986 On behalf of the faculty. I want to congratulate each of you on the successful completion of a demanding four year educational experience. You have been prepared to enter a rewarding profession and begin a career of providing competent and compassionate podiatric care to those In need. You are also about to enter a career of lifelong learning which will require making your graduation a launching pad toward a conroitment for continuing education. Without question, you are better trained podiatric physicians at an earlier stage In your careers than your predecessors. With that training, however, you must maintain an inquisitiveness and sense of observation that leads to the discovery and creation of new knowledge. More than just the delivery of podiatric medical services, each of you has the obligation to contribute to your profession, not just exploit it. You owe it to your forebearers and your successors who have made and will make their contributions to the relief of pain and cure of disease. The faculty and I wish you the pleasure and rewards attending the practice of podiatric medicine. You have earned it and we are proud to welcome you as colleagues. May the best days of your past be the worst days of your future. Good luck and best wishes. Oavid A. Axler, Ph.O. Acting Oean From the Desk of the Editor of Achilles '86 Dear Classmates: This is it! This is the book everybody has been waiting for, including me. And the pleasure is all mine . . . I hope this book will remind you through your professional lives that, as somebody once said, These Were The Best Times Of Your Life. Despite all the frustrations, I still want to thank everybody who had anything to do with the creation of Achilles '86 . My best wishes to all of you. Sincerely, Eugene Shapiro P.S. Picchione Nancy Ann Quimby 6 By The Unanimous Vote Class Of 1986 Is Proud To Present: Best Professor Dr. Carl Abramson Best Clinician Dr. Gary Bauer Dear Mom Dad, I don’t understand this camp P.C.P.M. There’s no grass, no place to park, and the Liberty Bell is still cracked. I woke up this morning and was awed by the beautiful view of Eddie’s Tatoo Parlor and enjoyed the sweet country smell of one day old Chinese food, diesal fuel and the bums roasting on the subway vents within the confines of our campus. Our first activity was an endurance event called Orientation”. The competition started easily with coffee and donuts; however, people started passing out during the Anatomy history. Don't worry, it’s all on tape. While all the guys were sleeping, one tall, skinny kid was scoping out girls and tantalizing them with his Sea Breeze” Cologne. As if this isn't enough excitement for one day already, Head Counselor Hoffer capitalized on our alertness. She said something about a pony and camp getting a lot worse before it becomes better. The next day started early with fire engine Reveille. Our first activity, Embryology, was as useful as Assistant Counselor Newman. The few test questions Harrington gave us were inversely proportional to his amount of alcohol consumption the night before. Our next activity was held with Uncle Frank. Nothing else looks like him! He tells us stories under the starry nights while some kid known as Gumbara cheech” and his bunk mate seemed to be very concerned whether or not Uncle Frank runs a residency program. BARKY CORN Our third activity lived up to its name It’s gross”. This activity taught by a Junior Counselor, Bobby Boyd and his round assistant KEN MINTZ, an Olympic triathalon winner. Some campers were here before the season began at a program known as SARP, (Slow and Retarded People), who think they know more than the rest of us. . . tell me counselor Churchill 'bout the Romberg Sign, will the test be valid if the patient is blind . . . DOROTHY J ROWELL . . . tell me Doc Shapiro if it's true, would a D.P.M. make a trip to the zoo . . . Our 4th activity involved wildlife appreciation. Bleeding dogs to death was only the beginning, even the frogs got “pithed” off. Question: “is it_________in here or is it just a. (hot; me) b. (cold; you) c. (boring; us) Answer: C _? Question: Why monkey fell from tree? Answer: Dead! Last week, instead of being bored with Biochemistry, the girls' camp played an intramural football game. Captains, lead their team with pride as if they were trying out for the ultimate schneiding team . . . . Last night I had a terrible nightmare. I found my hand rotating around my pencil from dorsal medial distal to plantar lateral proximal. I get the feeling that I'll be playing with my pencil a lot throughout the next 3 years. Please send money!! I wish you were here. Dear Mom and Dad, Why did you send me back to camp. Mrs. Gurney, Mrs. Kay, and Mrs. Zabner didn't send their kids back. I am beginning to hate it here. Things like mandatory attendance and Micro are running me ragged. Our first activity this year was podium back diving taught by Roman Dzarski. After considerable practice, several campers could actually do this from the sitting position. Some of our other activities of the year included a course taught by two famous celebrities. Jack Benny and Olive Oil. While Benny exposed pertinent and relevant pathologic facts, most of the kids present are betting their care packages as to how many times he will look up. Mandatory attendance became mandatory absence as activity group size fell to an all time low of about twenty. One clever camper even tried getting away with a stuffed replica of himself in order to pass roll call. Dr Arden, your lectures arc unsurpassed by anyone at this institution. We even have an activity which combines the astute knowledge of our Pathology Department with the mechanics of Airco Technical Institute. A counselor known as King Harold and his court jester. Dr. Axelrod (AKA George Smith), taught us how to park a car within the sinus tarsi of a supinated foot. Although we learned about phasic muscle activity, it was never really clear just what phase of the gait cycle the extensor phallucis longus is active. Dr. Lenny Jacobs was in charge of Wednesday mornings. We thought we were learning a lot of Pharm until we met Counselor Confusion . . . AKA Brittner. We have just been informed that Roche labs will be here on May 1st, 1999. . «r PAUL STAUNTON How the hell should we know what color the monkey's eyes were in the video tape . . . We were excused from this course. By the way Mom, you would be proud of me .... I made the List. NO, not the Dean’s List, the “Talking List” (Gumbara Cheech’s Research Project). Guess what, tomorrow we are taking a tour of the world’s only shoe museum............ . . . . This is more fun than any human being should be allowed to have. •Well Mom and Dad, that’s it for now. Please send money! I wish you were here. 12 Dear Mom and Dad, This camp sucks!! We descended into the clinic which was uncharted territory for most of us. Any patients interested in seeing Valeria, dial her personal telephone number, 1-800-maim-me. If the line is busy, look in the dark room. If the light is on, you know she is there. Let me tell you about some of my new clinic counselors. Some of them specialize in “L.A.S.E.R. Empire Strikes Back podiatric technology. They are friendly and often display all of the warmth of a union strike. Another counselor is trying to recruit patients to NASA’s Space Program .... You know, like an astronaut. Boot camp starts at 13:30 sharp, with full podiatric ammunition. Hey, anybody got a lozenge . . . One elder Tuberly Counselor used to be real happy until the “West Coast Kid showed up and now everyone gets a full body ROM exam along with a brand new set of California surfboards. m Hey, anybody got a lozenge? Anyone interested in slam dancing lessons .... Call the Community Health and Physical Rehabilitation Department. Our on hands surgical training was limited since the surgery department moved to 16th Girard. Suzy Synapse denies all connections to the statement “the lights are on but no one is home. Hey, anyone got a lozenge? n Clinic passed slowly with us watching procedures and passing instruments ad nauseum. Thusly, the “Leberace of clinic proceded to henceforth and here to fore procure our intellect on the subject of Peripheral Vascular Diseases. Having done a residency in Reconstruction Surgery of the English Language, Dr. PVD, continued to dazzle us with his thesaurus-like style. Hey, anybody got a lozenge? Getting to Dr. Witkowski's Office was the introduction to our next activity. The tag team of managed to capture the essence of boredom in their note service transcription more than the class itself. This is Forensic Podiatry, population 15. My partner’s name is Zaslow M.D., Ph.D., J.D., D.O., F.A.C.F.S., D.D.S., D.V.M., M.S., B.A., R.P.T., R.P.H., C.P.A., D.P.M., M.O.U.S.E., my name is Newman, D.P.M. Podiatric Law res ipsa loquiter. Hey, anybody get a lozenge? Our last activity of the year was neurologic jeopardy. He supplied the answers and we supplied the questions. As the year was winding down, like my two friends’ hair, things began to get a little tense. One camper took it upon himself to relieve his tenison the VMI way on an unarmed clock while the rest of the class got off on tape throwing. Continued on p122 Thomas E. Aal, D.P.M. Clincians whose egos were high as the sky Who busted your chops and made you cry. Who grilled and grilled till your brains got sore. Till your insides cried out I cant take it anymore. Then there were those who cared a lot and listened to you when you were in a spot, who bent over backwards to help you through, who'd do anything to comfort you. It's been an experience It's been a chore. THANK GOD, don't have to take it anymore. A special thanks to Dr. Burk and Dr. Fenton who had faith in me. A very special thanks to Mr. Newman and Diane Brown who were always there when I needed an ear and a shoulder. The biggest thanks of all goes to my son whom I love and who had the patience and understanding through all my years at PCPM, to realize that I couldn't spend time with him. Demetri, Jr. D.P.M. University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, B.S. Throughout my life, I have had one thing that was constant, and that was my Lord. He has taken me since birth and watched over me, never leaving my side. He has blessed me with loving parents, who gave all their love and wisdom to me, and were satisfied by a simple smile on a little boy's face. He has blessed me with true friends, who have shared their lives with me, and I with them, to better learn to love my fellow man. He has blessed me with the gift to love with my heart, so that I might experience the joy He has set aside for me. And now, as one chapter in my life comes to a close, I am thankful to Him for all these things, and look forward to the New Beginning that now awaits. GJD Mom and Dad - I know of no greater joy than being your son. Thanks for everything. I love you. Dennis D. D’Onofrio D.P.M. Saint Lawrence University, B.S. The Road Not Taken Two roads diverged in a yellow wood And sorry I could not travel both and be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth, Then took the other just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same. And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I -I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. R.
