The members of the Department of Clinical Pharmacy congratulate you and wish you much success upon entering our profession of Pharmacy. Medicinal Chemistry The Department of Medicinal Chemistry teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses. The undergraduate courses include: chemical equilibria and the fundamentals of analysis as these concepts apply to the measurement of pharmaceutical and medicinal substances in dosage forms and clinical samples: biochemistry as it describes mammalian processes in general and systems subject to modulation by pharmacologically active substances in particular: and medicinal chemistry, the chemical basis of treatment of disease. The graduate courses offered by faculty of the department range from analytical instrumentation through spectroscopic determination of structure, physical medicinal chemistry, chemical pharmacology and toxicology. You would think after all of these years I wouldn't have to study. Peter Doukas. Ph.D. 12 Richard Golder. Ph.D. John Stedman. Ph.D. Pharmacology In the beginning there was the physiograph that ushered in the pharmacology laboratory. In between there were many graphs showing some drugs were acting and others refractory. All worked on mice. rats. dogs, and frogs that provided data entered into logs. A scratch here, a bite there no one wanted to inject, but did so on a dare. Questions were answered by Mahalik, McDevitt and Lemke. but were always a little different from Mann and Gautieri. We learned all the procedures to identify the unknowns, but never realized they were the same as the knowns. Those correct rejoiced, but the others were sad. for they truly felt they had been had. Did you know that ASA injected into a pregnant long haired malomute causes ototoxicity? Ronald Gautieri, Ph.D. — Chairperson Looks like a little extracurricular Cognosy action to me. Robert Thompson. At meetings and conventions students discuss topics of interest to the profession of pharmacy. This year the Temple Chapter of Student APhA superceded previous membership drives by recruiting over 120 members. Temple also hosted the Regional Midyear Meeting. Many students were actively involved in the planning and execution of this very successful convention. Record attendance was also achieved for the Annual Meeting in Montreal. In the 1983-84 academic year Temple Student APhA showed renewed enthusiasm for pharmacy and we look forward to even greater achievement in the future. 22 President — Regina Gamrat Vice President — Diane Haugh Sccrctary Treasurer — Mike Fox Executive Asst. — Charles Cervino Advisor — Dr. Paul Zanowlak 23 SNPhA The Student National Pharmaceutical Association (SNPhA) is the student auxiliary of the National Pharmaceutical Association (NPhA). SNPhA was established in 1972 and NPhA was founded in 1948. The SNPhA chapter at Temple University is also affiliated with the Greater Philadelphia Pharmaceutical Society which is the local NPhA chapter for the Philadelphia area. The goals of SNPhA are many. Paramount among these is to provide health care information and counseling for minority and underpriviledged communities which are often neglected by other health professional organizations. The organization also undertakes to promote the profession of Pharmacy to minorities by increasing their representation in the field, and it strives to develop the leadership qualities of its membership. S 24 Secundum Artem Secundum Artem is a yearbook run by the students of Temple Pharmacy School. This year the staff of the yearbook attempted to put together a book with a touch of uniqueness. The staff had a multitude of responsibilities which included the following: raising funds, organizing the book and selling it. All in all it was an experience that will never be forgotten by those who were involved in the creation of the yearbook. 25 Lambda Kappa Sigma The 1983-84 year has been a time of both tradition and transition for the sisters of the Alpha-Alpha chapter of Lambda Kappa Sigma. In the fall, the year began with the traditional freshmen luncheon. The rest of the semester was filled with more LKS traditions: T-shirt sales, dinners, the excitement of pledging, supporting Children's Hospital and last but not least the famous LKS bake sales. Spring brought a mixture of the old and the new. In keeping with tradition, we enjoyed the annual semi-formal with Kappa Psi in April. As usual, everyone had a great time. Spring of '84 also brought the re-institution of the Hygia Day celebration. Another new event was the LKS Bon Voyage party before the Lilly trip. 26 President — Robin DICesare Vice President — Sherri Torbey Treasurer — Sue Rushln Recording Secretary — Linda Hlrsch Corresponding Secretary — Anne Marie Lehany Social Chairperson — Linda Barton Pledge Mother — Chris Shalamanda Advisor — Dr. Elaine Mackowlak 27 V 4 ME! This year brought with it many changes, the most important of which was the changing of our faculty advisor after the resignation of Dr. Ronald Gautieri. We wish to sincerely thank Dr. Gautieri for his many years of service and dedication to the fraternity. We also give best wishes to his successor. Dr. Robert Thompson. As another generation of Men dedicated to a Profession graduate, we wish them the best of luck and success in the future. Never forget us . . . you’ll never be forgotten. Phi Delta Chi The year 1983-1984 can be looked back on as a rebuilding year for the fraternity at 1211 Allegheny Ave. Phi Delta Chi’s future was looking uncertain, but thanks to a large pledge class the fraternity has been revitalized. The past year has been filled with extensive house renovations; the house is now fully heated and all rooms are rented. In addition, the frat held a successful blood drive, donated to the Phila. SAPhA convention, held raffle sales and had numerous successful parties. Overall. 1983-84 has been an excellent year for the brothers and sisters of Phi Delta Chi. President — Jennifer Kristick Vice President — Sue Melnick Secretary.'Treasurer — Ralph Bcrtolino Advisor — Dr. Peter Doukas 30 I 1 President — Rob Frankll Vice President — William George Secretary Treasurer — Suzette Thomas. Mario Spina Fund Raising Chairman — John Gatto Social Director — Kathy Kuty Pledge Master — Charles Lebegern Fiery Dragon — James Powell File Keeper — Mike Lacey Advisor — Dr. Paul Zanowiak 32 Rho Pi Phi This past year was, once again, a very successful year. A pledge class of 18 was initiated in the fall and 9 more in the spring. The parties at Rope continued to be the focal point of action. We found it necessary to open up the street for the first party in the fall! Some Rope members contributed, on the fraternities behalf at the SAPhA convention in Philadelphia by helping to raise money. Many of the brothers and sisters were inducted into Rho Chi’s honor society. The entire fraternity owes great thanks to graduating members Ed Melber and Mario Spina for making Rho Pi Phi what it is today. 33 Alpha Zeta Omega AZO is a fraternity struggling to break with tradition. Not having a house to call our own sometimes brings a feeling of detachment. However, we have new plans for the future. We wish to establish ourselves as a true professional pharmaceutical fraternity. In this respect we want to balance our social activities with the time and effort needed to run professional activities. These activities have encompassed trips to pharmaceutical companies, as well as social get-togethers. We plan to do more in the future, and hope to make a positive contribution to our college community. Directorum — Michael Williams Subdlrectorum — Laura Wescoat Signare — Brian Freeman Excheque — Arthur Patalowski Scargent at Arms — Jonathan Burke Advisor — Dr. Willett 34 Rho Chi Rho Chi is the honor society at Temple Pharmacy School. Each year new members from the 2nd and 3rd year classes are inducted into the society at an annual banquet held in December. Rho Chi also sponsors the Kallelis-Lynch lecture series which honors a member of the faculty who has made a contribution to science through his her research. For the 1983-84 school year the honor was bestowed on Dr. Speaker. The day was a fun filled one for all who attended, bringing together the 3 classes for one last hurrah. It proved to be a perfect ending to another tough year tucked away under our degrees. 40 41 42 44 Gymnasium, Volleyball, Aerobics, Etc. w e’t e J’ st £ e9un UNDERCLASSMEN SECUNDUIA ftRTEIA 4 Class of 85 As we look over the past events in the last year we see ourselves gradually being shaped into RPhs. The fall semester found us battling Pharmacology. Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmacognosy and various other Disease States. This was our first exposure to Dr. Doukas and his 210 parasympatholytic, adrenergic, anticholinergic. sympathomimetic amines. Meanwhile, our heads are spinning between relatively long pre-synaptic cholinergic fibers and relatively short post-synaptic adrenergic fibers. And how could we ever forget those days of Biopharmaceutics and Dr. Kowar-ski's “Can you hear me in the back? . The highlights of our 2nd year included the Lilly trip to Indianapolis. the Annual Christmas Party at DiPinto's, the school picnic at Fairmount Park and of course the fraternity parties. And so as another year comes to an end and we move a little closer to graduation, we look back to find memories and forward to new expectations. I'm telling my mom you won't let me play! Row I: J. After a summer celebrating our acceptances to Pharmacy school it was time to get serious. Mo one relayed that message better than Dr. Baker. The weeks to come were filled with new found friendships, discovering what professional fraternities were all about and studying for quizzes we never expected. As the semester wore on names such as Remington and Stoklosa became a part of our daily conversation. Those good morning greetings from Dr. Martin continued into our second semester. Our work was cut out for us but we were prepared to handle all obstacles before us. This semester we were able to explore our interests in Pharmacy through various elective courses. Some of us selected Health Care with those infamous Green Sheets, while others explored Radioisotopes and Nutrition. The electives were varied but so were our interests. For the first time we were beginning to shape our careers in a more definite way. With only four semesters ahead of us. the intensity of learning our profession was felt strongly. We were confident that we would conquer any obstacle to achieve our goals. Top left: Lean. mean, righting machine. Bottom left: I'm gonna wash that grey right out of my hair. From I. to r. Row 1: S. Billig Class of 984 What seems like three weeks ago. is in reality three years, when one-hundred and forty students convened for one common goal ... to become pharmacists. Throughout our three years at Temple University School of Pharmacy, we have developed vast pharmaceutical knowledge and technical skills, as well as friendships. We will fondly remember our legal beagle. the number of our seat in room 110. and that pH has a small p . We have shared many experiences since the beginning of our pharmacy career, including our trip to Eli Lilly (with upside-down lampshades), various notetaking services, and an abundance of back tests. The years have passed very quickly for most of us. We have grown considerably from our varied experiences both in and out of school, together and alone. And now for the last time we will share one final event together . . . our graduation. From this time on. we will proceed not as a group, but individually to practice to our fullest potential the knowledge we have gained at this excellent school of pharmacy. The Kimbics inspector. There's a season for beginnings When the world is fresh and new, When we shape our dreams of all The things we plan and hope to do, A season for maturing When we think and work and grow. And the season for the harvesting Of all we’ve come to know. And each successive season Grows still richer than the last As treasures of the present Add to memories of the past. This book is an attempt to capture the essence of these memories — the good times shared with friends, the smiles and laughter, and the moments of just being together. For it is with all of these visions that the pages of our minds are filled, and although they are still quite clear, someday they will be blurred with the rest of our past. It is our hope that when this happens, on some quiet evening spent reminiscing alone, our efforts will bring a smile to your heart as you recapture the days of 1983-84. The staff of Secundum Artem would like to say a special thank-you to those people who went out of their way to help make this book a success — Cathy Vasile, for all of her advice and support (both photographic and otherwise); Dan Solari of Cooke Publishing, for his considerable assistance in every phase of this publication; Merin Studios, without whose photographic aid this book would have very few pictures; Dr. Mann for his generous financial support; Ms. Titus and Eileen for their help whenever it was needed; the faculty and students whose writings added that extra touch; and to all of the others who contributed in both big and little ways — it was greatly appreciated!
