Unique in the sense that the benefits gained by each individual is truly special to that person. It would be difficult for an outsider to perceive the experiences of Temple and cherish the moments as we do. The time spent here may have seemed like an eternity to some, but to others it had slipped by so quickly that it seemed like yesterday we had entered the building at 3307 N. Broad for the first time. Together we struggle to reach the same goal to carry the initials of R.Ph. after our names. But each one accomplished it in their own special way. While attaining our goal we also added to our lives many unforgettable moments and friends. It is true that not every hour was filled with laughter and good times but hopefully the good times outweighed the bad. Within the pages of this book we have tried to capture some of those moments. Years from now these pictures may bring a smile to many or perhaps a tear to some. But it will reflect your own unique experience at Temple. 4 5 6 Joseph D. McEvilla. Ph D.-Dean Adelaide Van Titus. M S.-Assistant Dean John Lynch. Ph.G. The Class of 1982 remembers these two men well. Although they are no longer teaching in the classroom, they are an intricate part of making Temple Pharmacy School what it is today. Mr. Fred Gable served his last year as Assistant Dean, before retiring, the year the graduating class entered pharmacy school. Mr. John Lynch, a former professor of pharmacy, is still the curator of the Pharmacy Museum, located on the fourth floor. The following is a list of Professors Emeritus of the Temple University School of Pharmacy: Herbert M. Cobe, Ph.D. Frank H. Eby, Ph.D. Edward Fackenthal, Ph.D. Arthur James. Ph D. Theodore Kallelis. Just as the striving for physical strength, dexterity, and beauty serves no ultimate aim, such as to make us rich, famous, and powerful, but is its own reward, since it enhances our life-feeling and self-confidence, since it makes us happier and more resilient and gives us a greater feeling of assurance and health, so the striving for “education, that is. for improvement of the mind, is not an arduous journey toward any definite goal, but a gratifying and fortifying broadening of our consciousness, an enrichment of our possibilities of life and happiness. Accordingly, true education, like true physical culture, is at once a fulfillment and a spur; always at the goal and never stopping to rest, it is a journey in the infinite, a participation in the movement of the universe, a living in timelessness. Its purpose is not to enhance particular abilities; rather, it helps us to give meaning to our lives, to interpret the past, to be fearless and open toward the future. —Herman Hesse Richard Golder. It is because of their dedication and knowledge that the foundation for a successful and prosperous career is reconstructed in the mind of each student. Going beyond the walls of the classroom, there are those teachers who are always ready to hear a problem whether it be academic or personal. It is this special quality that binds the faculty and student body and reinforces the structure. As each class passes thru the doors of the school, they leave taking with them a little part of each professor, whether it be good or bad. that in some way has molded our idea of “The Professional Pharmacist. 18 19 20 In September of 1979, we walked thru the doors of Temple University School of Pharmacy—somewhat frightened and confused, but full of ambition. So much ambition that we quantitatively analyzed the shear forces” of our manic depressive state, where during our manic phase we pulled all nighters that increased our sympathetic outburst ; followed by our depressed phase which required massive amounts of THE Rx —JOE'S (Beer?-what part of the plant, leaf, stem, root, or draft?) . . . where metabolism and elimination aren't nearly as rapid as intake and absorption leading to the usual side effects. Yet. above all, thru our compliance with the therapeutics and proper dose regimens of our disease state”—we managed to pull thru!!! Paul M Adams Rho Chi. Phi Del. Mr. Ashbaugh. a graduate of Temple Pharmacy School, started his career in the Public Health Service, which led to his present position. As he told us at a symposium held from 12:20-1:30, he has found his pharmacy career very rewarding. We also have to mention Mr. Fred Gable, who introduced Mr. Ashbaugh. and gave us a thorough history on him from the time he left Temple Pharmacy as a graduate to the present. The pharmacy school sponsored a luncheon for him and faculty members. and the Alumni Association also held a dinner in his honor that evening. A taste test was conducted this year under the supervision of Dr. Zanowiak and two of his research students. Sue Reichenbaugh and Sue Whitmire. A grant was given to the school by the Wyeth Co. to manufacture and test different flavorings for their Phenergan® cough syrup. Miscellaneous 66 Country and Western Party 68 Miscellaneous 70 Miscellaneous coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress, working together is success Class of 83 Packing summer dreams away ... coming back to a world of books and classes is what September means to the Junior Class. As the excitement of freshman year has dwindled and it is too soon to consider graduation, the class of Eighty-three settles back into the routine only to find that there were many new things to encounter. New words and definitions found their way into our vocabulary. Words like Pharmacognosy. Radiopharmaceutics. nicotinic receptors and pharmacokinetics expanded our knowledge in the field. We were asked to perform some once thought to be impossible tasks. But. come spring, there was hardly a soul who cringed at the thought of injecting some animal who has sacrificed its' life for science. Tuesday was not just the day after Monday, but it was the last 24 hours to write-up and memorize this weeks' drug list. This in-between year started new friendships and strengthened old ones. As the year closed it was obvious that the end was approaching, for now we could finally see the light at the end of the path. 74 J A .' ■ ■ E. Aaronson A. Angclucd K. Many more days in the months ahead were to be spent in room 101 and later in room 110. Days filled with Green Sheets, Pharmacy handouts that resembled books, surprise quizzes and What’s My Line? contestants posing as Anatomy professors. New acquaintances developed into old friends and unfamiliar buildings became second homes as the novelty slowly changed into the routine almost without our realizing it. Going to Doc’s was as common as studying, and Thursday night parties were responsible for many Friday morning regrets. Now we have to plan and hope that for whatever tomorrow has in store, we will be able to accept the challenge and because of this become a better person. It is important that we never forget the friendships we have made along the way, the knowledge we have acquired, and the many, many memories encompassing both of these aspects. Temple University has not only taught us the moral connection that a Pharmacist should stand for. it has given us the opportunity to be a friend . . ., and for this, we will be forever thankful. 98 99 101 GOLD The Parents of Steven Albertson “We graduate to begin,” Best Wishes and Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Edw.
