FROM THE Dear Class, Our journey through medical school has come to an end, but our careers are just beginning. It is hard to believe that just four years ago, we sat in orientation and heard how we would be learning about the human condition” as medical students and future physicians. Since day one, we formed teams to learn anatomy and physiology, accd RATs, tackled workshop problem sets, and developed examination skills in Doctoring. Slowly but surely, as we interviewed and examined patients, scrubbed into OR procedures, and wrote progress notes, we witnessed each other grow into our future roles as physicians. Outside of the hospital and classroom, we also volunteered and worked at schools, community centers, clinics, and homeless shelters throughout Philadelphia, across Pennsylvania, and around the world. We published research, presented at international conferences, and lobbied at local and state tiers of government. In doing so, we embodied the belief that as medical students and future doctors, we are responsible not only for the health of the patients we treat, but also for the well-being of the community around us. Next year, we will spread out across the country as residents, bringing our hard-working and enthusiastic Temple spirit wherever we go. We will always look back fondly on our accomplishments here and remember where our journey began! Congratulations Class of 2017! Best Wishes, Mike Tzcng, President Marina Baskharoun, Vice President Jonathan Ragheb, Community Service Chair TEMPLE UNIVERSITY 83

FROM THE DEnn or SCHOOL Congratulations, Physicians of the Class of 2017. Four years ago, you came to medical school eager to earn your MD degree at an institution of academic excellence and social conscience. Now you’ve done precisely that. The education you received-four years of rigorous training-transformed you. Yet it also held sacrosanct your desire to make a difference in the world. That, as you know, is the one thing no medical school can teach you. Yet it is the most essential element of doctoring of all. Heed this advice as in the months and years ahead: Keep fanning that flame. That, more than anything else, will fortify and renew you. There's no question that we face daunting challenges on the healthcare road ahead. But if you stay close to your calling and true to your goals, you can excel no matter what the conditions. We, too, have a goal at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine: To watch our alumni become more determined—and more capable—than ever before. Your class is exceptionally well-prepared to shine among the scores of leaders we have launched thus far in our 116-ycar history. Hats off to you, Class of 2017. You make us proud. Larry R. Kaiser, MD, FACS Dean, Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University Senior Executive Vice President for Health Affairs, Temple University President and CEO, Temple University Health System 82 LEWIS KATZ SCHOOL OF MEDICINE
