Temple University Ginsburg Health Sciences Library LEWIS KATZ SCHOOL OF MEDICINE TEMPLE UNIVERSITY 3500 North Broad Street Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 1914D The 2016 I DD SOLEMNLY SWEAR BY THAT WHICH I HOLD MOST SACRED: That I will be loyal to the profession of medicine and just and generous to its members; That I will lead my life and practice my art in uprightness and honor; That into whatsoever house I shall enter, it shall be for the good of the sick to the utmost of my power, I holding myself aloof from wrong, from corruption, and from the tempting of others to vice; That I will excercise my art solely for the cure of my patients, and will give no drug, perform no operation for a criminal purpose, even if solicited; That whatsoever I shall see or hear of the lives of others which is not fitting to be spoken, I will keep inviolably secret. These things I do promise. As I am faithful to this my oath may happiness and good repute be ever mine. The opposite if I shall be forsworn. 2 Lewis K tj School or medicine Administration ....................................1 □ Faculty Support Staff........................... Today’s graduation ceremony is a manifestation of an ancient rite of passage in the modern context. An important part of the graduation ceremony is the giving of the hoods. The origin of the hood lies with the Celts and the Druids (Celtic priests). Among the Celts, only the Druids wore mantles, which had hoods attached to them as a mark of their rank in society. In the schools of the Middle Ages, the hoods were worn as a covering to resist the frigid temperatures. Gradually, it was integrated into the academic system with much symbolic significance. Now, the wearing of the hoods symbolizes a kind of authority, a high standing, or a new graduate’s institution and degree. A hood is always black in color, but the edges and lining have individual significance. The hood is lined in silk with the official colors of the institution conferring the degree. The edging of the hood is velvet, with a particular color representative of a field of study. The official colors of Temple University are cherry and white. The dark green velvet signifies the field of medicine. One of the great continuing traditions is the presence of hooders - individuals who symbolically bestow the medical degree upon each graduate. The senior class has chosen four individuals to assist with the placement of these hoods. These distinguished members of the faculty were selected not only for their superior quality of teaching, but also for their passion, hard work, and dedication. The hooders have committed themselves to challenging the minds of medical students and encouraging us as future doctors to maintain the integrity of the profession. It was from these mentors that we were able to become true physicians. Thank you, Dr. Garg, for your devotion to our clinical development and for encouraging us to serve the world. Thank you, Dr. Goldberg, for inspiring us even through the hardest times. We can only hope to have your passion for medicine for the rest of our lives. Thank you, Dr. Grubmeyer, for laying down a solid foundation during our pre-clinical years. Thank you, Dr. Peet, for your mentorship and advice, but most of all for getting us through the crazy ride that is medical school! 4 Lewis Katz Scmuo or MEDICINE When did you know you wanted to become a doctor? “Where I am from the highest pinnacle of a job you could have is to become a doctor. I did not want to be a doctor. I wanted to be an astrophysicist. At MIT one of my closest friends steeped into a bad depression and I did not know what to do. He handed me a poem about ‘doing cartwheels’ on the roof and then I took him to MIT Counseling Service. After that experience, I worked on a suicide hotline in California that taught me that I did not want to be psychiatrist but I learned a lot and realized that I enjoyed helping people . Why Ir fectious Disease? “I like to solve puzzles and to figure things out by helping out the other doctors. I was really good at remembering bugs and antibiotics. It is fun! We also get the best stories. For example, I had a young woman with two ulcers in the same area in both legs. Cultures from the ulcer grewr very unusual bacteria. I asked the patient what she liked to do for fun and her husband replied 'She likes to be covered in mud!’ That was an odd statement. This particular bacterium grows in soil. The patient then told me she had her pants rolled up when she went riding her four-wheeler and got covered in mud. Do you think cardiologist get great stories like that? TtMPu university 5 Why Temple? “I went to a doctors party the night before my interview at Temple. Yes, I skipped my pre-interview social. Of course at that party 1 bumped into two Temple doctors! We talked for a long time. On my interview day, 1 thought that everyone was so nice and friendly. That was it! I wanted to go to a place where people work together and not pin against each other”. Tell us about your involvement with medical school students. “I really enjoy teaching as well as serve as a mentor to students. I started as an advisor for the LGTB group. I then began to branch off and got involved in teaching students. I was elected to the Teaching Committee because I wanted to learn how to teach you guys. 1 taught Microbiology for a while and then the Curriculum Committee asked me to teach Biostatistics as well. The students really energize me! Now I am at the Admission Committee and recruiting outstanding students for Temple. Oh, and I am also the advisor for Parkinson College! One of my latest projects is to enhance the medical school’s curriculum in gender, sex and sexuality. 1 make sure that this included in the appropriate times in the curriculum . What is your favorite memory at Temple? “I loved working with my medical students while in Residency. We would get into all sorts of trouble but did not get caught! Q Sc A with The Class of 2016 One word to describe Dr. Bettiker? Sweet, as the candy he he keeps in his top shelf in his office, wholehearted and infectious. One memory with Dr. Bettiker? How caring he was with his patients at his HIV clinic, he went above and beyond for each of them. VVc can only aspire to become incredible physicians as he is. One thing Dr. Bettiker has taught you? Besides having someone do your statistics for you. Dr. Bettiker has taught me to approach each patient as a blank slate with an open mind and fresh eyes. If you could be a bug, which one would it be and why? “I would be Toxoplasma. I would hang out in the brain. 1 would oversee everything and not cause too many problems”. If you could be an antibiotic, which one would you be and why? “I would be Imipenem. It has broad coverage and is involved in many things. It's sort of a left-handed molecule, gives you another perspective and a different way of approaching things”. What is your favorite spot in Philadelphia? “I love to walk and bike in Fairmount Park. I also like to eat! My favorite restaurant is Garces Trading Company”. What advice do you have or our class after graduation? “There are times to be very serious and buckle down to work. But there are many times to let loose. There are times to do both! Don’t forget to have a balance between the both. Intern year is fun but it is a learning opportunity that you don’t get again . Temple University 7 All around Philadelphia 8 Lewis Katz school or Mroicmi TUnk jou si TO DUR ADMINISTRATION, FACULTY AND SUPPDRT STAFF The class of 2016 would like to express their gratitude to the people who have guided us along this tremendous journey. Anatomy - where 99% of us realized we wouldn't be honoring every block in medical school. Also where we wondered if we could sublet our apartments for a month while we moved into the lab. 2. Biochemistry - a necessary subject to answer the question “how does fomepizole work? correctly exactly one time in rounds. 3. Histology - learning the normal function of the body by looking at slides that you'll never see or use again, until the Pathology rotation you show up for 2 hours a day as a fourth year. 4. Neuro - how to “pleasantly” argue with group members professors during RATs. 5. Doctoring - where no one volunteered to be the one to check for the femoral pulse. Also where we practiced being non-judgmental and said things like “you do cocaine? Ok, good.” 6. Internal Medicine - where I learned how to write assessment and plans that were approximately as long as a Stephen King novel. 7. Surgery - there are actually 3 ways to cut the knot: “too long,” “too short, ’ and “get out of my OR. 8. Pediatrics - the only rotation where patient rapport is built by the coolness of your socks. 9. Ob Gyn - where you get yelled at for saving “oops” when you mess up a suture during a C-section. Also, a place for guys to pretend they understand the menstrual cycle with questions like “what size tampon do you use? You know, for the flow?” 10. Psychiatry - “so you couldn’t sleep because your roommate thinks he is Jesus, the bed is an altar, and he was preaching to you all night? ...Makes sense. I may just be the medical student, but I can guarantee someone here is getting more Haldol. 11. Family Medicine - interrogations that end with “ok, fine, I'm not taking my metformin.” 12. Neurology - where you can round for 5 hours, discuss every tract and neuronal pathway, write an extremely detailed note, and still just discharge the patient to inpatient rehab. 13. Radiology - a rotation spent sitting behind your resident in the dark, trying to hide the light from your phone, while occasionally saving, “yeah, I see it” at random. 14. Emergency Medicine - working up a patient until you get bored, then admitting them to medicine. Also, a high-octane environment fueled by “I thought it would be a good idea to drink a beer through my anus” and similar geniuses. 15. Everything after September 15th of Fourth Year - saying “I have a thing to go to every day around 10 am. 16. Medical School - where I learned, worked, laughed, cried, worked a little more, slept (a little), hid from attendings, crammed for exams, had the occasional “sick” day spent at the park, was built up and just as quickly humbled, forgot more than most people learned in a lifetime, brought life into the world and watched it leave in the same week. It made me better, worse, funnier, cynical, compassionate, understanding, and probably a little weird to people who don’t see what we see everyday. And best of all, I met some of my best friends, and the love of my life (love you Becca!). And I can’t imagine doing anything else with these years. Thanks to everyone who made it special! -Andrew Coulter TlMPLt UNIVERSITY lewis Katz School or medicine Class of 2016: Joel C. Rosenfeld, M.D., M.Ed.. FACS I want to extend my warmest congratulations to the Class of 2016 of the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University and especially to our class of Temple St. Luke’s regional campus students who have spent their entire second, third, and fourth years training at St. Luke’s University Hospital in Bethlehem. Thank you for all your efforts to develop and enrich our regional campus, as well as our local community. I also want to congratulate the many students who rotated with us for their required and elective courses. You should be proud of your accomplishments. We certainly are proud of you. It has been a true pleasure to see you develop into knowledgeable, caring, and skillful young physicians. As you are aware, the education of a physician occurs over three stages - undergraduate - medical school, graduate - residency and fellowships, and post graduate - continuing medical education. You are embarking your second stage, beginning a residency. You have learned a great deal of information in the past four years. Now you will be applying that knowledge and the skills you learned for the treatment of patients in the specialty you have chosen. You have been taught the importance of continuing education. We know that you will provide excellent care to your patients. We urge you to remember that you will always be an ambassador for the Lewis Katz School of Medicine and St. Luke’s University Health Network. Sincerely, Joel C. Rosenfeld, M.D., M.Ed., FACS Chief Academic Officer St. Luke’s University Health Network Senior Associate Dean and Professor of Surgery Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University lewis katz School or medicine CONGRATULATIONS to everyone in the Class of 2016 on achieving this milestone in your education! In 2013, our clinical campus became part of the Allegheny Health Network, an integrated delivery network that includes seven hospitals in western Pennsylvania, a physician organization and 2,100 affiliated physicians, a research institute, ambulatory surgery centers, Health + Wellness pavilions and a diverse array of home and community health services. We are proud of what our network has accomplished in the past year. The AHN Cancer Institute is a world-renowned cancer center rated in the top 5 percent nationally for quality care in 2015. according to Comparion Medical Analytics. AHN’s cardiovascular disease program at Allegheny General is recognized by CareChex®, a division of Comparion, as the best in western Pennsylvania in 2015 for medical excellence, patient safety and patient satisfaction. The network’s heart transplant program is ranked in the nation’s top 10 programs by Comparion based on the same measures. Allegheny Health Network, carrying on a long tradition of our Pittsburgh based hospitals, understands that undergraduate and graduate medical education constitutes a core function of our hospitals and faculty. Our Temple students play an integral role in this. Their enthusiasm, intelligence, and empathy for our patients continually remind us of how remarkable they are. Every caregiver contributes to the exceptional clinical outcomes that play such an important role in the distinguished recognitions we have earned, and I thank Temple students who completed their learning experiences on our campus for your contributions to these successes. You have demonstrated that you have the knowledge and skills to be outstanding physicians and you can be proud of your accomplishments. The faculty’ and staff at Gcisinger Health System have enjoyed being part of the medical school education for many of you. As an organization, we strive to HEAL, TEACH, DISCOVER, and SERVE. The skills that you develop in medical school are the foundation. Your challenge is to build on these skills as you enter the next phase of life-long learning. We know that you are prepared to provide excellence in patient care as both future leaders and team members in systems that will increasingly require innovation and quality'. If you spent time at Geisinger as a clinical campus student, or simply as a student on a single rotation, we hope that you gained some insight into the importance of system design and innovations that lead to optimal patient outcomes. We hope that you also realize that it is still an incredible honor to he fortunate enough to share the relationship between a physician and a patient. Frdm our deans The Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University has produced scores of leaders in medicine during its 115 year history. Now you and your classmates have joined the ranks of graduates who are advancing academia, clinical practice, industry, and human service across the globe. You came here four years ago. keen to learn medicine at an institution of academic excellence and social conscience. The education you received — four years of rigorous training -- transformed you, yet held sacrosanct your desire to make a difference in the world. That, as you know, is an intrinsic essential. Medicine long calls, and so much more. Yes. we survived all of it with the help of loved ones and a set of about 200 other “crazy individuals who also chose to endure this rollercoaster yet thoroughly rewarding journey called medical school. We will always remember that first time we delivered a baby, saw our first trauma code, drew blood, got called doctor, did chest compressions, and the unfortunate scenario of seeing a patient die. Not many other careers provide you with all of these experiences and their respective range of emotions. This is the beauty of medicine. We are all heading to the next step in our careers. As intimidating as that sounds. I am certain we will excel no matter where we go. Temple has prepared us for that next step. Most importantly, we are making that next step alongside a truly special group of individuals. Hard work, collegiality, and empathy. These are the qualities that define the Class of 2016 and that is the mark we are leaving at Temple, and anywhere we go. Congratulations Class of 2016! Best Wishes. Thank you to all the people that helped get me here: my parents, friends, bunnies and my very first puppy. Daphne. Finally, thank you to Brett for encouraging me throughout this whole journey. I was so lucky to have met you here and can't wait to see what we will get ourselves into next! Congratulations class of 2016! Here is to a bright future 3 Dhahran, Saudi Arabia B.A. Biology Occidental College I want to thank my family, first, for helping me through one of the most difficult experiences of my life. Dr. Queenan my first contact with neurosurgery. Dr. Weinick my primary contact. Dr. Poet who put me in contact with Dr. Weinick, and who communicated so well with everyone involved. I want to thank Dr. Kim who preserved my functional status, Dr. Sterner who helped me through ull the extended difficult)’ that followed, always my advocate. My little bro and his Amanda who sent me absurd hospital gifts that made me laugh while hurting so much. My big bro for coming up to visit while 1 was completely unable to express my appreciation for that act of kindness and support which 1 will never forget. I want to thank my parents for their entire lives of hard work, and knowledge of the fundamental truths of life: that family matters, that preparation is important, that caring is what brings us through the hard times, that honesty is at the center of it all. and for putting in all the hard work and preparation that allowed them to help me when I needed it most. 1 want to thank all of the faculty and administration who allowed me to pursue this degree even though they recommended I should take some time off. Dianne Butera, I was listening the entire time and I understood that you were being the more reasonable of the two of us. and I appreciated all that you said, and I processed it deeply, even though I didn't seem to. I want to thank Dr. Heckman, who pushed me even when I didn't believe in myself, and made that first step back into test taking passible, along with Jordan Malenke, and Kyle Sears, with their insistence on the possibility of distance learning. Of course, 1 can't mention that without Dr. Sterling, who made it possible. 1 want to thank all of my incredible friends for being at the scene, anti calm, and unwaveringly supportive in the endeavor. I want to thank Lauren Brown for being my sister. Joy Reynolds for reading to me in the ICU, along with her precious friend, Sarah Weiss who I feel honored to know. I want to thank Everett Bacon for being exactly who I would have been had he fallen. That random ENT from Penn who stopped and did serial exams even though he understood how minimal the impact of his medical actions were, his conscientiousness and kindness let me breathe and focus on not losing my ability to breathe. Thank you to Andrew Fried, the arbiter of positivity and harbinger of good things to come. I want to thank Peter Nilsson for recognizing that paralysis precludes you from reading books, and sending me books on tape along with the soundtrack that inspired me through recovery even though we had only met once and months prior to the occasion. I want to thank Kyle Sears for riding with me in the ambulance, and for being my visitor, for being my most steadfast studying companion and friend. I could not have made it through my second year without you, and that year defines my experience in medical school. The true hero, though, is Derrick Russell. What would 1 even have thought to do if you hadn't called and left a message while 1 was in the hospital? What would my parents think of me if they hadn't met you? Truly, thank you for ushering me into the library each day with a friendly and warm, lightheaded gesture. You make it easier. You made everything easier for all of us. Each of you have informed what will be my actions throughout life. I love you all, and thank you so much for all you did to support me. The longer I love, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me. is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company...a church....a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past...we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude...! am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and go% how react to it. And so it is with you...we are in charge of our attitudes. - Charles R. Swindoll East Windsor, NJ B.S. Human Biology, Health and Society Cornell University “You are the light of the world... But Thought has need of no such things, For thought has a pair of dauntless wings. On snow and sand and turf, I see Where Love has left a printed trace With straining in the world’s embrace. And such is Love and glad to be. But Thought has shaken his ankles free. Thought cleaves the interstellar gloom And sits in Sirius' disc all night, Till day makes him retrace his flight. With smell of burning on every plume, Back past the sun to an earthly room. His gains in heaven are what they are. Yet some say Love by being thrall And simply staying possesses all In several beauty that Thought fares far To find fused in another star. university 269 We U it, CW oL 2016! 270 Lewie katz School or medicine TempleM aDe TEMI’LC univerbitv 271 Paola Esparragoza jdanna Garcia Editor-in-Chief Co-Editor-in-Chief Lauren Monaco Rachel Kominsky Sanjana Luther Janice Koh Senior Pages Senior Pages Student Life Student Life Mansha Sethi Lyana Labrada Monica LoBue Karla Criner Faculty Staff Faculty Staff Ads Patrons Ads Patrons 272 Lewis Katz School or medicine Printed and Bound m the U S A.
