On October 16, 2011, the Temple community lost a treasured and respected member in Dr. Barbara Stitt. Dr. Stitt’s trek to Temple was circuitous in nature. After growing up in the Boston area, she attended Reed College in Portland, Oregon before earning her Ph.D. at California Institute of Techonology. She then spent some time in New York completing post-doc work before becoming a radiant fixture on the Temple campus in 1991. While here, Dr. Stitt concentrated her research efforts on bacterial transcription mechanisms. If there was one word that could accurately describe Dr. Stitt, it would be “dedicated”. In the face of ailing health, she IN MEMORIAM DR. BARBARA STITT, PhD Associate Professor of Biochemistry 1949 - 2011 would sign herself out of the hospital to cross the street and give lectures to medical students, only to then have to trek back to the hospital to be readmitted. Fighting through health issues, Dr. Stitt never lost sight of her commitment to students. Her dedication to educating graduate students and to encouraging their ventures into new research frontiers led her to be a recipient of the Dawn Marks Memorial Award - an award that graduate students bestow upon professors deemed to have their best interest at heart. Outside of the lab and classroom, Dr. Stitt was an avid collector of contemporary and antique glass art, eventually coming to gather an extensive collection of European and American pieces. When not focused on finding unique glass pieces to add to her stockpile, she shifted her focus towards collecting African fabric. Dr. Stitt felt a sense of obligation to uphold her end of the bargain to teach future doctors of the world. In unison, we thank her and promise to always remember her resilience and dedication. 30 n : ipi.i{ i i Kitsrn oi' mi-dicim-
