It was a special gift to have had a dean who worked to improve the educational experience not only through administrative means, but also through personal interaction with the students. We all know of Dean Daly’s great accomplishments while serving as the dean of our medical school. He spearheaded the project that eventually became the Medical Education and Research Building, and all of us can attest to the great impact this has had on our education. We were the only class that spent preclini-cal years in both Kresge and MERB, and for that reason we have a special appreciation for the effort Dean Daly put into this incredible task. He took the reins when the medical school found itself in the difficult position of being placed on probation by the LOME and facing a migration of faculty away from the institution. His passion and vision for the resurgence of the school reversed the previous trend and began to attract new physicians and educators. He worked to revamp the curriculum and restored our LCME accreditation. He took our school GOODBYE ' DEAN JOHN DALY Professor of Surgery from its downward skid and elevated it to a level it had not previously attained. And while all of these accomplishments were vital in supplying us with the resources to obtain a first-rate medical education, Dean Daly did not stop here. He invested even more time into our education. During first year anatomy, he led the discussion of the abdomen in one of the four class modules. He also attended presentations at the end of our Neurology rotation, and contributed both feedback and a question or two at the end of each and every student talk. He would always make time for us, the students. From an amicable “How are you doing?” as we would pass him in the lobby, to a meeting scheduled exclusively to listen to our input on the current state of the medical school, Dean Daly was unparalleled in his dedication to each and every one of us. 8 n: in.!•: L'xivi-Ksrn ofmkdicixi-:

Dr. Retamero has already received the 2010 Golden Apple Teaching Award in recognition of her excellence in medical student education. Additionally, Dr. Retamero is the first clinician from the Department of Psychiatry to receive the School of Medicine Yearbook Dedication since 1985. In only four years, Dr. Retamero has left a lasting impression on both her students and the Department of Psychiatry. We are sure this is only the beginning of a long career filled with achievements and recogition for Dr. Retamero. Although she is a mentor to many students, Dr. Retamero would like to thank Dr. Ruth Lamdan for the outstanding role she has played not only in her psychiatric career but in all aspects of her life. Dr. Lamdan, former Director of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry, was key in Dr. Retamero’s transition from resident to attending being “the best person to come in and learn from...about everything, not just psychiatry.” On behalf of Dr. William Dubin M.D., Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychiatry, and the rest of the department of psychiatry: “The dedication of this years yearbook to Dr. Carolina Retamero by the Class of 2012 is an accomplishment that the entire Department of Psychiatry shares with pride. Dr. Retamero is committed to student education and her creativity and enthusiasm have revolutionized how psychiatry is being taught at Temple. 0 DEAN LARRY KAISER Professor of Surgery Throughout our four years the Class of 2012 has had the unique opportunity to first experience the transition from Kresge to MERB and then welcome a new Dean, Dr. Larry Kaiser. Last April, Dr. Kaiser was appointed as the new CEO of Temple University Health System, Senior Executive Vice President for the Health Sciences, as well as Dean of our medical school. Though it has been merely a year since the transition, and many of us have not had the pleasure to meet him, Dean Kaiser has been very busy helping further the success of Temple University as a hospi- tal system, medical school and research facility. Once named a “Top Doc” by Philadelphia magazine, we are fortunate to have the highly experienced and honored cardiothoracic surgeon join the ranks of Temple after holding prior prestigious posts in academia. In the past year, he has demonstrated his talent and passion for leadership while spearheading the merger of Temple with Fox Chase Cancer Center, allowing for the healthy growth of Temple during these rough financial times. We are proud to call Dr. Larry Kaiser our Dean, and excited to see how his future efforts will shape the Temple community and impact the next generation of doctors.
