Graduation is a cultural tradition considered a rite of passage from one platform in a student’s life to another. It has its origins in antiquity where many tribes were found to be celebrating their passing from youth to adulthood through various customs and observances. Today’s graduation ceremony is a manifestation of this ancient rite of passage in the modern context. An important part of the graduation ceremony is the giving of the hoods. The origin of the hood lies with the Celts and the Druids (the Celtic priests). Among the Celts, only the Druids wore mantles which had hoods attached to them as a mark of their rank in the society. In the schools of the Middle Ages, the hoods were worn as a covering to resist the frigid temperatures. Gradually, it was integrated into the academic system with much symbolic significance. Now, the wearing of hoods symbolizes a kind of authority, a high standing, or to identify a new graduate’s institution and degree. A hood is always black in color, but the edges and lining have individual significance. The hood is lined in silk with the official colors of the institution conferring the degree. The edging of the hood is velvet, with a particular color representative of a field of study. The official colors of Temple University are cherry and white. The dark green velvet signifies medicine. One of the great continuing traditions is the presence of hooders - indiviuals who symbolically bestow the medical degree upon each graduate. The senior class chose four individuals to assist with the placement of the hoods. These distinguished members of the faculty were selected not only for their superior quality of teaching, but for their passion, hard work, and dedication. Each hooder has committed themselves to challenging the minds of medical students and encouraging future doctors to maintain integrity to the profession. It was from these mentors that we were able to become true physicians. Thank you Dr. Harbison for allowing us to become surgeons for at least 8 weeks of our lives. Thank you Dr. Reeves for always putting us, the students, first. Thank you Dr. Schneck for inspiring us during anatomy and setting the stage for the rest of our careers. Thank you Dr. Sterling for your continuous support and dedication to our learning. 4 n-MPl.K IMYI-RSITY OI; MI-DICIXK Sean Harbison, M.D., FACS Professor, Surgery Kathleen Reeves, M.D. Office of Student Affairs Professor. Pediatrics Carson Schneck, M.D., Ph.D. Professor. Anatomy and Cell Biology Professor, Radiology DEDICATION 10 DR. CAROLINA RETAMERO Professor of Psychiat ry and Behavioral Science “My teaching philosophy is to help my students fight the stigma of mental illness through understanding. I also try to help them understand what persons with mental illness are going through and make then aware of society’s trend to isolate persons with mental illness. I try to make them aware of the many important contributions persons with mental illness have made to society and that recovery is not only possible but should be our goal. There is no doubt that the road to becoming a doctor is extremely dependent on the support that we receive throughout our training. Family, friends, teachers, patients, and mentors all shape the way that we have grown and matured during these past four years. Family and friends help us through the tough moments and encourage us to continue. Teachers and patients give us the knowledge and experience that we will use for the rest of our careers. But our mentors give us a template for the kind of physician we aspire to become. Each year the graduating class dedicates the yearbook to an outstanding faculty member and teacher who has devoted him or herself to the task of medical student education. This honor is given to someone who shows a great interest in molding the future generation of physicians through their commitment and innovative teaching methods. The dedicatees do not simply convey information through words on a slide, but they go a step further to create new, interactive teaching styles that make us think differently about learning the material. They inspire us and guide us. They make us the doctors that we will soon become. This year, the class of 2012 has chosen Dr. Carolina Retamero, M.D., Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, for her outstanding commitment and enthusiasm for medical student education. This great honor also gives Dr. Retamero the privilege of addressing the class at the 2012 Temple University School of Medicine graduation ceremony. Dr. Retamero grew up in Caracas, Venezuela where she lived until she came to the United States for her residency in Psychiatry. She excelled not only in academics during her school years, but she was also an award winning mi;ski1.1 5 DEDICATION swimmer who participated in many national and international competitions. She attended medical school at the Universidad Central de Venezuela directly after high school. After graduating in 2002, she immediately began practicing in a rural Venezuelan town named Carayaca. As a new graduate, she was in charge of the government based medical facility 36 hours at a time while simultaneously preparing for Step 1. During this time she managed hundred of traumas, obstetrical deliveries, and illnesses, gaining an exponential amount of knowledge and experience in a short period of time. 61 i: in i: l i i:ksh n or ii m She finally began her Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences residency in 2004 at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia. There she was immediately impressed with the “instant gratification” that psychiatric patient care provided her. Two years later, Dr. Retamero found herself established in a new city and recently married. With a long-held interest in medical education, Dr. Retamero proudly accepted the position of Associate Clerkship Director of Medical Student Education for the Department of Psychiatry at Temple University in 2008. Her focus on “team based learning” included weekly psychiatry-themed Jeopardy games as well as small-group learning sessions for students. These innovative teaching techniques helped to increase the mean Psychiatry shelf exam score while allowing Dr. Retamero to do what she enjoys most: interact with medical students. In her brief time at Temple University, Dr. Retamero has already received the 2010 Golden Apple Teaching Award in recognition of her excellence in medical student education. Additionally, Dr. Retamero is the first clinician from the Department of Psychiatry to receive the School of Medicine Yearbook Dedication since 1985. In only four years, Dr. Retamero has left a lasting impression on both her students and the Department of Psychiatry. We are sure this is only the beginning of a long career filled with achievements and recogition for Dr. Retamero. Although she is a mentor to many students, Dr. Retamero would like to thank Dr. Ruth Lamdan for the outstanding role she has played not only in her psychiatric career but in all aspects of her life. Dr. Lamdan, former Director of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry, was key in Dr. Retamero’s transition from resident to attending being “the best person to come in and learn from...about everything, not just psychiatry.” On behalf of Dr. William Dubin M.D., Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychiatry, and the rest of the department of psychiatry: “The dedication of this years yearbook to Dr. Carolina Retamero by the Class of 2012 is an accomplishment that the entire Department of Psychiatry shares with pride. Dr. Retamero is committed to student education and her creativity and enthusiasm have revolutionized how psychiatry is being taught at Temple. The faculty members of the Department of Psychiatry congratulate her and thank her for her extraordinary efforts.” By: Suzette Delgado Eric Silverman Till-Skil l 7 It was a special gift to have had a dean who worked to improve the educational experience not only through administrative means, but also through personal interaction with the students. We all know of Dean Daly’s great accomplishments while serving as the dean of our medical school. He spearheaded the project that eventually became the Medical Education and Research Building, and all of us can attest to the great impact this has had on our education. We were the only class that spent preclini-cal years in both Kresge and MERB, and for that reason we have a special appreciation for the effort Dean Daly put into this incredible task. He took the reins when the medical school found itself in the difficult position of being placed on probation by the LOME and facing a migration of faculty away from the institution. His passion and vision for the resurgence of the school reversed the previous trend and began to attract new physicians and educators. He worked to revamp the curriculum and restored our LCME accreditation. He took our school GOODBYE ' DEAN JOHN DALY Professor of Surgery from its downward skid and elevated it to a level it had not previously attained. And while all of these accomplishments were vital in supplying us with the resources to obtain a first-rate medical education, Dean Daly did not stop here. He invested even more time into our education. During first year anatomy, he led the discussion of the abdomen in one of the four class modules. He also attended presentations at the end of our Neurology rotation, and contributed both feedback and a question or two at the end of each and every student talk. He would always make time for us, the students. From an amicable “How are you doing?” as we would pass him in the lobby, to a meeting scheduled exclusively to listen to our input on the current state of the medical school, Dean Daly was unparalleled in his dedication to each and every one of us. 8 n: in.!•: L'xivi-Ksrn ofmkdicixi-: 0 DEAN LARRY KAISER Professor of Surgery Throughout our four years the Class of 2012 has had the unique opportunity to first experience the transition from Kresge to MERB and then welcome a new Dean, Dr. Larry Kaiser. Last April, Dr. Kaiser was appointed as the new CEO of Temple University Health System, Senior Executive Vice President for the Health Sciences, as well as Dean of our medical school. Though it has been merely a year since the transition, and many of us have not had the pleasure to meet him, Dean Kaiser has been very busy helping further the success of Temple University as a hospi- tal system, medical school and research facility. Once named a “Top Doc” by Philadelphia magazine, we are fortunate to have the highly experienced and honored cardiothoracic surgeon join the ranks of Temple after holding prior prestigious posts in academia. In the past year, he has demonstrated his talent and passion for leadership while spearheading the merger of Temple with Fox Chase Cancer Center, allowing for the healthy growth of Temple during these rough financial times. We are proud to call Dr. Larry Kaiser our Dean, and excited to see how his future efforts will shape the Temple community and impact the next generation of doctors. Dr. Stitt’s trek to Temple was circuitous in nature. After growing up in the Boston area, she attended Reed College in Portland, Oregon before earning her Ph.D. at California Institute of Techonology. She then spent some time in New York completing post-doc work before becoming a radiant fixture on the Temple campus in 1991. While here, Dr. Stitt concentrated her research efforts on bacterial transcription mechanisms. If there was one word that could accurately describe Dr. Stitt, it would be “dedicated”. In the face of ailing health, she IN MEMORIAM DR. BARBARA STITT, PhD Associate Professor of Biochemistry 1949 - 2011 would sign herself out of the hospital to cross the street and give lectures to medical students, only to then have to trek back to the hospital to be readmitted. Fighting through health issues, Dr. Stitt never lost sight of her commitment to students. Her dedication to educating graduate students and to encouraging their ventures into new research frontiers led her to be a recipient of the Dawn Marks Memorial Award - an award that graduate students bestow upon professors deemed to have their best interest at heart. Outside of the lab and classroom, Dr. Stitt was an avid collector of contemporary and antique glass art, eventually coming to gather an extensive collection of European and American pieces. When not focused on finding unique glass pieces to add to her stockpile, she shifted her focus towards collecting African fabric. Dr. Stitt felt a sense of obligation to uphold her end of the bargain to teach future doctors of the world. In unison, we thank her and promise to always remember her resilience and dedication. 30 n : ipi.i{ i i Kitsrn oi' mi-dicim- IN MEM0R1AM MARTIN WHITAKER JR, MSW Senior Academic Counselor for Reeruitcment, Admissions, and Retention 1960-2011 The email gravely announcing Mr. Whitaker’s untimely demise left shockwaves rippling through faculty members, administrators, and students alike. We were all used to seeing his welcoming smile, hearing his words of encouragement, and taking note of his extensive bowtie collection. How was it possible that the same man that we had just shared a laugh with was no longer with us? Mr. Whitaker was a native Philadelphian who never quite left. Early in his life, he made his mark as a leader by becoming a Life Scout in the Boy Scouts of America Troop 632. He strongly believed in giving back to the community that helped him to get to his station in life. This is evidenced by his work with the local youth. Using his natural athletic ability and his gift for mentoring, Mr. Whitaker served as the assistant track coach for the girls on the Morris Estate Track Club where they lovingly referred to him as “Coach Marty”. Mr. Whitaker attended Seton Hall University in South Jersey where he earned his B.S. in social work before he moved on to Temple to complete his masters. While at Seton Hall, he developed a knack for fencing and continued to showcase his prowess in track and field. Once brought to Temple to work with the office of admissions, he concentrated his efforts in increas- ing the presence of underrepresented minorities and sought to counsel all students throughout their respective journeys in medical school. It is here that Mr. Whitaker further developed his skill for counseling students, a role he filled for over 20 years. Even with a full plate, Mr. Whitaker always found time to have a little fun through Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. A member for 32 years, he was an established gifted stepper and led the “Philly All Stars” to international acclaim. Known as “Mr. Wiggles”, he brought a unique skill and distinctive style to the step team for over 6 years. There is no guarantee that the Temple community will ever be able to fill the void that Mr. Whitaker left in his departure, for in him we lost an advocate, a mentor, and a friend. There is no way that we could ever pay him back for his dedication and service but we are forever thankful and will always remember him. You have demonstrated that you have the knowledge and skills to be outstanding physicians and you can be proud of your accomplishments. The faculty and staff at Geisinger Health System have enjoyed being part of the medical school education for many of you. As an organization, we strive to HEAL, TEACH, DISCOVER, and SERVE. The skills that you develop in medical school are the foundation. Your challenge is to build on these skills as you enter the next phase of lifelong learning. We know that you are prepared to provide excellence in patient care as both future leaders and team members in systems that will increasingly require innovation and quality. If you spent time at Geisinger as a clinical campus student, as a semester student or simply as a student on a single rotation, we hope that you gained some insight into the importance of system design and innovations that lead to optimal patient outcomes. We hope that you also realize that it is still an incredible honor to be fortunate enough to share the relationship between a physician and a patient. As you progress through your careers and become responsible for creating the healthcare systems of the future, remember the words of our founder, Abigail Geisinger, “Make it the Best”. LUKE’S HOSPITAL CLASS OF 2012: I want to extend my warmest congratulations to the Class of 2012 of Temple University School of Medicine, and especially to our fifth class of Clinical Campus students who spent their entire third and fourth years training at the St. Luke’s Hospital in Bethlehem, PA, and to the many students who rotated with us for required courses and electives. You should be proud of your accomplishments. We are proud of you. It has been a pleasure to see our Temple students develop into knowledgeable, caring, and skillful young physicians. St. Luke’s Hospital, Bethlehem, PA, is a full-service institution and a Level I trauma center. It is one of five hospitals in the St. Luke’s Health Network. We have won numerous national awards and recognition for patient care. We have also been designated three times in a row as one of the top 100 Best Places to Work in Pennsylvania. A significant part of our mission is the education of physicians at all levels (undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate - CMB) as well as nurses and allied health professionals. We are one of the oldest Temple University School of Medicine affiliated hospitals. Six years ago St. Luke’s became a clinical campus. This year, the first group of 31 students started in the Regional Medical School of Temple University School of Medicine St. Luke’s Hospital and Health Network. We are especially proud of our relationship with the Temple University School of Medicine and the part we play in the development of young physicians. 1 wish you much success as you start your next phase of medical education. We also continue to enjoy having the main campus students join us for their required and elective rotations. Our campus achieved a milestone in June 2011. The Temple University School of Medicine Clinical Campus in Pittsburgh is now sponsored by West Penn Allegheny Health System (WPAHS). WPAHS, a physician-led five-hospital health system, includes Allegheny General Hospital and The Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh, Forbes Regional Hospital in Monroeville, Allegheny Valley Hospital in Natrona Heights, and Canonsburg General Hospital in Canonsburg, Pa. We are proud that all of our hospitals routinely receive national recognitions for quality care. Some highlights for hospitals where our students complete core rotations include the following: Allegheny General has often been named among the nation’s “Best Hospitals” by U.S. News World Report, including 2011-12 recognition as one of the nation’s best regional hospitals in 9 areas of excellence. The Western Pennsylvania Hospital is the first in Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania to have earned w Magnet Recognition® for excellence in nursing services from the American Nurses Credentialing Center, an achievement only about 6% of the nation’s hospitals can boast. Its almost hard to believe that the time has finally come for us to enter a new chapter and start our careers. Just a few short years ago we began this journey coming from different backgrounds and experiences, excited to find what our futures held. Congratulations from the 2012 Class President At Temple we’ve had one-of-a-kind experiences like realizing Dr. Schnecks unique ability to memorize all of our names before meeting us and standard ones like braving through and conquering second year. Some things well never forget include celebrating the end of rotations together at class events, the feeling we had as third years when we saw a classmate we hadn’t seen in weeks or months, and most recently the wonderful feeling of enjoying fourth year. These past few years have been great and I feel honored to have shared my experience with such an amazing group of people. Our class has been an active one, passionate about making differences in the lives of others. Now that we are entering a new phase in our lives we have the ability to do that and more. Because it makes a vast difference whether or not it works!’' “If you have a cat at home, put his favorite food in a dish. Then just before he starts to eat, snatch the dish away. Before he scratches you, look at his pupils. That’s an SNS response.” “Is everyone bright-eyed and bushy-tailed this morning?” “Do you know what the deferens stands for of ductus deferens? Because you have to defer to your partner in order to use it.” “The descending colon should actually be called the ass-ending colon.” “My primary care doctor doesn’t like giving rectal exams. She says her finger is too short. I always tell her, ‘No, its not!”’ “The prostatic utricle, where the Mullerian ducts merge, is called the vagina masculina. I bet you guys didn’t know you were all bisexual!” “Because men see breasts everywhere, that’s why these are called the mammillary bodies.” In response to his question why we call it the vagus nerve, one student replied “I guess it’s because the vagus nerve does so many things that I really don t have the ‘vaguest’ idea.” “ Males have three erectile structures-1 corpus spongiosum and 2 corpora cavernosa, but female have four erectile structures-2 bulbs of the vestibule and 2 crura of the clitoris. So females have more erectile organs than males...doesn’t that burst your bubble guys?” “What are the contents of the peritoneal cavity? A small amount of peritoneal fluid and an occasional venturesome sperm.” “In my medical school class there was a student who always had his hand frantically up in the air to ask questions. This came to evoke a very audible sigh of ridicule from the class, but he never stopped asking questions. So we named him “gluteus maximus” because it was general consensus that he was the biggest ass in the class.” INI SKI I I 243 On Behalf of the Pharmacology Department: Best Wishes to the Class of 2012!! School of Medicine TEMPLE UNIVERSITY' 244 i i: iii.i: l i iKsrn oi mi dk i i; CHOOSING A SPECIALTY Many medical students sweat and fret when it comes time to choose which residency is right for them. They try imagining their future, asking their loved ones, and sometimes even try “no guarantee questionnaires in a desperate attempt to pick the right field of medicine for their future career. The problem is simply not knowing the essence of each specialty. As most medical students are familiar with coffee, a technique has been developed that compares the essence of each field of medicine with the everyday task of drinking a cup of coffee. Each student simply needs to find the cup of coffee that most appeals to him or her, and a specialty match is made! Control: A cup of coffee Dermatology: Look at the coffee, then go home. Emergency Medicine: Coffee to go Family Practice: Savor the coffee with your family and friends, then prescribe a Z-Pack. General Surgery: Drink the $ % !!(§) coffee NOW! Gynecology: Make the coffee uncomfortable by using a very cold spoon. Internal Medicine: R o tea, chocolate milk, Captain Morgan’s, juice, water, etc.... TEMPLE 4 UNIVERSITY i hool of Medicine Obstetrics: Deliver the coffee. Opthalmology: Which coffee looks better: Coffee one or coffee two? Orthopedics: Take the coffee cup, smash it and stomp on it. Get a prosthetic coffee cup, toss it on the ground and consult medicine to clean up the mess. Otolaryngology: Scope the coffee. Pediatrics: You are too young for coffee. How about some Kool-Aid? Psychiatry: Figure out which side of the house in the sky your patient is in then put some Zoloft in his coffee. Radiolog)': Liquid consistent with coffee but cannot rule out tea, chocolate milk, Captain Morgan s. Urology: I would not drink that coffee if I were you...
