DEDICATION Derrick Russell errick Russell was born at Temple University Hospital on September 15, 1954. He grew up with three loving sisters named Beverly Ling- lam, Karen Stevenson and Dr. Lisa Croft, in a busy North Philadelphia home, not too far from Temple’s campus. His mother worked as a hair stylist at the family-owned business and his father was a teacher. Derrick resided in North Philadelphia up until the age of ten, at which time, he decided to move to Pitman, New Jersey. Derrick lived with relatives and attended Pitman Memorial Middle School. After four years away from home. Derrick returned to Philadelphia and completed his high school education at Simon Gratz. Whether it was swimming laps, shooting hoops or competing in a tennis match. Derrick had a love for sports and kept quite active. After graduating from high school in 1973, Derrick was ready to face the working world and find himself a challenging job. He enrolled in the JFK Business Technical School for retail merchandising and received a certificate that enabled him to specialize in management and sales. It was during this time in Derrick's life that he met his first wife and began to start a family. Derrick has two sons from his first marriage:Derrick P. The Journey Towards Our DESTINATION ffl n August 24, 2000 we began a challenging and exciting journey at Temple University School of Medicine. We traveled from distances near and far to embark upon our goal of earning a medical degree. We came from different cultures, and backgrounds, which contributed to the diversity that embodies one of the many unique characteristics that distinguishes Temple from other universities in Philadelphia. Although we each had our own interests, we all had one common goal: to become competent, confident, compassionate physicians. In the last four years, we have been able to arm ourselves with a greater knowledge of all that encompasses the field of medicine. Moreover, throughout our journey, toward a medical degree, our endurance both as individuals and as a class was repeatedly put to the test. The result has been a greater awareness of one's self and a commitment to arrive at our final academic destination. On May 20. 2004 we arrived at the end of the road of our medical school journey together and achieved our ultimate goal of becoming doctors. As we look back on all of the memories we have to share, it is evident that we are prepared to embark upon yet another journey toward a successful future career in each of our chosen fields of specialty. Our final destination on this particular day is reached upon receipt of our medical degrees. -Cat Schermer. Editor Temple University School of Medicine 3
