We traveled from distances near and far to embark upon our goal of earning a medical degree. We came from different cultures, and backgrounds, which contributed to the diversity that embodies one of the many unique characteristics that distinguishes Temple from other universities in Philadelphia. Although we each had our own interests, we all had one common goal: to become competent, confident, compassionate physicians. In the last four years, we have been able to arm ourselves with a greater knowledge of all that encompasses the field of medicine. Moreover, throughout our journey, toward a medical degree, our endurance both as individuals and as a class was repeatedly put to the test. The result has been a greater awareness of one's self and a commitment to arrive at our final academic destination. On May 20. 2004 we arrived at the end of the road of our medical school journey together and achieved our ultimate goal of becoming doctors. As we look back on all of the memories we have to share, it is evident that we are prepared to embark upon yet another journey toward a successful future career in each of our chosen fields of specialty. Our final destination on this particular day is reached upon receipt of our medical degrees. -Cat Schermer. Editor Temple University School of Medicine 3 DEDICATION Derrick Russell errick Russell was born at Temple University Hospital on September 15, 1954. He grew up ______ with three loving sisters named Beverly Ling- lam, Karen Stevenson and Dr. Lisa Croft, in a busy North Philadelphia home, not too far from Temple’s campus. His mother worked as a hair stylist at the family-owned business and his father was a teacher. Derrick resided in North Philadelphia up until the age of ten, at which time, he decided to move to Pitman, New Jersey. Derrick lived with relatives and attended Pitman Memorial Middle School. After four years away from home. Derrick returned to Philadelphia and completed his high school education at Simon Gratz. Whether it was swimming laps, shooting hoops or competing in a tennis match. Derrick had a love for sports and kept quite active. After graduating from high school in 1973, Derrick was ready to face the working world and find himself a challenging job. He enrolled in the JFK Business Technical School for retail merchandising and received a certificate that enabled him to specialize in management and sales. It was during this time in Derrick's life that he met his first wife and began to start a family. Derrick has two sons from his first marriage:Derrick P. Russell, Jr, who currently attends Community College and is employed as a construction worker, and, Dar-rone P. Russell, who is a full-time dad to four children. Derrick then remarried on April 30, 1983 to Vanessa Thompson-Brown. After a few years of marriage, Der- 4 2004 Skull rick and Vanessa had Lindsey, who currently resides in in Midlothian, Virginia and attends Manchester High school. Derrick is proud to share that his daughter has been selected to represent Virginia as a Student Ambassador in England and France this summer. 2004. Derrick proudly joined the Temple community in September, 1997. He was initially hired as a temporary library clerk at the medical school. Within a year. Derrick was made a full-time employee and planned to stay for an indefinite period of time. “Temple is amazing! he remarks. “I am proud to work at an institution of higher learning where diversity is second nature. It is like working at the United Nations! 1 treasure the opportunity to meet and deal with people of many cultures and backgrounds.” The Class of 2004 considers Derrick an asset to Temple University. Jeff Conly, a member of the graduating class shares, “Derrick is a great guy and the best part about visiting the library'. He has a way of making everyone feel like he is your best friend. You can't walk by the check-out counter without a friendly, outgoing hello and a few welcome minutes of good conversation.Derrick has a way of giving a humorous dose of reality to the sometimes trivial hardships of medical school. Temple University School of Medicine 5 DEDICATION Derrick is considered a great friend to all. It takes a special kind of individual to touch the hearts and lives of so many on a consistent basis. If there was a PhD in human nature, Derrick would most definitely be a recipient of such a degree. Another member of the graduating class, David Zo-bian, shared some personal comments,“I call him ‘Rex' because he is a king. I would visit him after almost every test. No matter how hard the exam, how destitute I felt. Derrick always put a smile on my face and really put things into perspective.” Derrick truly values the students’ experiences throughout four years of medical school at Temple. He Freeman Biomedical Information Center says, “It is paramount that the students receive effective service consistently. I respect their decision to pursue a medical education and I admire their perseverance to graduate.” “Throughout the years,” Derrick says, “I've learned to recognize the first year T can conquer the world’ gleam: the second year ‘what did I get myself into’ gaze; the third year ‘no more lecture hall' hooray, and. the fourth year ‘I can't believe I did it!' leap.” Derrick experienced what we experienced. He always took the time to ask us the details of our studies and had an active part in helping us to see that there was a successful light at the end of the tunnel. 6 2004 Skull Wally Baker reflects on Derrick's vibrant personality. “He takes a personal interest in getting to know all of the students, including their names, that he possibly can from the first day of medical school. Derrick takes his work seriously and adds a very special charm and enthusiasm for all that he does. He is a personality that we w ill always fondly remember from our days at Temple University.’' This special dedication to Derrick and all of the touching and meaningful comments made by students throughout the years could fill more pages than an entire yearbook can hold. Derrick was there for each and every student at one time during four years of our med- ical school education. He witnessed some of our highs and supported us through our unfortunate lows. Derrick was consistently available to celebrate the successes and repeatedly encouraged us to stay focused, recognize our goals, aim to achieve all and never give up! The Class of 2004 is so fortunate to have had the opportunity to benefit from Derrick's enthusiasm and devotion to the students at Temple Medical School. It is with gratitude and many thanks that we honor Derrick Russell with the dedication of the 2004 Skull. Destination M.D. WE LOVE YOU DERRICK! Temple University School of Medicine 7 GUIDING US THROUGH THE JOURNEY The graduation hood each student receives is a relic from medieval times which remains as a great tradition in present dag academia. The hood is lined in silk with the official colors of the institution conferring the degree. The edging of the hood is in velvet, with a particular color representative of the field of studg to which a degree pertains. Temple University's official colors are cherrg and white, while dark green signifies medicine. HOODERS □r. Amy Goldberg ne of the great continuing traditions o at Te nple University School of Med-__icine is the presence of hooders; individuals who symbolically bestow the medical degree upon each graduate. The Senior Class chooses four individuals to assist with the placement of hoods on each of the members of the graduating class. These distinguished members of the Temple University School of Medicine Faculty were selected not only for their superior quality of teaching, but, for their compassion, hard work and dedication to patient care and the practice of medicine. Each hooder has commited themselves to challenging the minds of medical students and encouraging future doctors to be the best that they can be. □r. Valerie, In 1994. w hen Valerie was working as an RN. and noticed that almost all of the attending physicians she worked with were divorced (at least once), she made the declaration I would rather drown myself in the Hudson River than ever marry a physician . Valerie maintained this stance as she began attending graduate school in Baltimore, only changing the declaration to I would rather drown myself in the Baltimore Harbor . But as the saying goes...man makes plans and the Almighty laughs. Yea...even when Miles and Valerie got married in 1997. he did not have plans on going to medical school, and so Valerie’s wish came (technically) true. Thank You Miles would like to thank all the people who have helped him reached this momentous occasion: Valerie, for making sure Miles did not starve to death in the face of countless free and incredibly un-kosher lunches. Rami (son) and Jessica (daughter) for wailing to be bom until the day after finals in the fall semester of 200! (despite warnings they would never make it 39.5 weeks. Ira and Rita Levin for paying the most expensive Temple dues EVER. Naomi and George Rotter for keeping their grandchildren clothed and fed. Jen Badik for keeping Miles awake during lectures. The Temple teaching stall for providing class notes for when Jen failed to wake Miles up. Itamar Levari for making studying more interesting by belting on the correct answer. (Miles is still up two kosher meals, and a can of coke) The Biochemistry instructors for scaring Miles into losing 20 pounds after the semester. Miles intends to pursue a career in pathology. His love of the basic sciences and deep interest in providing the most accurate diagnosis has in part led to this decision. Of course, medicine is not Miles’ sole interest in life. During medical school he was able to keep up with a softball league, pick-up ping-pong games and study Jewish legal cthical issues in medicine. When his wife. Valeric left her career in health-care information systems to stay home with the children, she did the only thing that made sense and completely enmeshed herself in Miles' academic professional life. She has helped purchase books, watched Dr. Sch-neck videos, write Miles’ ERAS application, looks over Miles' shoulder while he does Kaplan Qbank. and of course, is responsible for authoring this yearbook page. In honor of that. Miles has promised that Temple will issue a second degree that reads Awarded to Miles and Valerie Levin. 9D Dr. Miles Levine Or. I also continue to enjoy having the main campus students for their required and elective rotations. Some of the students on required rotations have chosen to return in their senior year for electives. The campus continues to be one of the city's leading teaching facilities, which has attracted medical students from across the country. Two of our clinical campus students (Donald Glaser and Joseph Gatial) have excelled in their academic work and were recognized for their efforts by being elected to the AOA. This is the honorary medical society that accepts only about 10% of the class. Once again, a Temple medical student, Stacey Milan has been nominated as one of the Outstanding Senior Medical Students to the Pittsburgh Surgical Society. I look forward to our continued affiliation with the Temple University School of Medicine and the growth of the clinical campus to be a major resource for the School of Medicine in educating their students.
