In one tale, he tells of how he was visiting this eldest son. who was at the time in the Central African republic working in the Peace Corps. He befriended the local pygmies and spent some lime with them sleeping in the bush and scouting for wild elephants along the swamps. One night in particular he had an almost ethereal experience when he described the moon as being so bright that it blinded his eyes to look at it directly. It was a never to be forgotten experience. Another tale is that of a trip to the Philippines where his daughter and son-in-law were stationed. His son-in-law directed a naval research unit. They had to live under strict conditions, and he saw his son-in-law only a few days out of the month he visited because the Philippine rebel army blamed him and his colleagues for the introduction of AIDS and some other infectious diseases into the Philippines. He recounts being driven in armored cars and never taking the same route from the house. He then recounts talcs from his numerous trips to China where he was hospitalized after being in a motor vehicle accident and also of returning with his brother and his sister-in-law, a China bom woman, who left her home in Shanghai 50 years earlier when she tied the country during World War II. In June 1951, he married a fellow graduate student by the name of Janet Gutz and they had five wonderful children together. Janet obtained a Masters degree in Guidance and Counselling and then went on to work as an administrative assistant in the College of Nursing in Iowa. Their children are Kathleen. Margaret. Benjamin. Steven and John and he also has five beautiful grandchildren. Currently, he spends his re- tirement planning trips and remodelling his home. He says the days seem to go so quickly and he exclaimed that he was like a proverbial chicken without a head running around trying to do so many things. In the words of John S. Way. we will keep it simple and say that, it is with great pleasure and pride that the class of 1997 honors Dr. Way with the dedication of the 1997 Skull. —Bunmi Bccklcy Dr. Way at retirement party with faculty members. Dr. Way in Anatomy Class with students. With young child. China. 1994. Just arrived at Minm uifh t..„ Beijing. 1990 after hospitalization for auto accident.

HOODERS Hoods are a relic of medievalism in modern academic life. The hood’s silken lining is the color of the university conferring the degree, and the velvet indicates the special area of study. The colors of Temple University are cherry red and while; dark green represents medicine. Hoodcrs are individuals who symbolically bestow our degrees upon us. Each year the senior class chooses four individuals to place Academic Hoods upon us at our graduation ceremony. These distinguished individuals were selected not only for superb quality of teaching, but also for their hard work and dedication to the Class and Temple University School of Medicine. Our four years in medical school have been easier and more enjoyable due to individuals such as these, and they have served as great inspirations to us all. Hooders for the Class of 1997 are: Dr. Richard Eisenstaedt. Deputy Chair, Department of Internal Medicine; Dr. Bennett Lorber, Section Chief, Infectious Diseases; Dr. Sally Rosen. Associate Dean for Student Affairs; Dr. Gerald Sterling. Department of Pharmacology. On behalf of the Class of 1997, the yearbook staff wishes to thank each of them for the time they have taken to guide us through the beginning stages of our medical careers. Sally Rosen. M.D. 8 Bennett Lorber. M.D.
