UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE 3400 NORTH BROAD STREET PHILADELPHIA, PA 19140 10 FACULTY 92 STUDENT LIFE 166 SENIORS 334 RESIDENCIES 342 PATRONS AND ADVERTISEMENTS DEDICATION JOHN STODDARD WAY, PH.D. Most of us in the class of 1997 will remember hearing Dr. Way’s famous question. Are you asking me or are you telling me? , in his booming voice with a great big smile on his face. Bom John Stoddard Way in Elmhurst. Illinois on December 14th. 1928, to a father who was a life insurance agent and mother a homemaker, as the 3rd of five children, he spent his childhood in Wheaton. Illinois, hunting, fishing, building huts and doing projects around their home Band and orchestra were his main interests as a drummer from junior high through college. High school was at Wheaton Community. He spent his first two years of college at Dubuque University in Iowa (1946-1948) majoring in psychology and sociology then being an adventurous type hitchhiked to Provo. Utah where he transferred to Brigham Young University in 1948. He left in January 1949 when he was accepted into the University of Iowa, where he graduated in June 1950 with a degree in Psychology. He worked as a research assistant in anatomy at Northwestern University School of Medicine in Chicago for around one year where he fell in love with the nervous system and anatomy in general. This opened the door to what would become his career. His stay was cut short by the Korean War when he was drafted, but promptly released following a physical examination which revealed an old knee injury incurred in gym class. Dr. Way describes this event to me as he laughs to himself. A fellow classmate had jumped on his back in gym class and at that instant he heard and felt the famous pop which indeed turned out to be w hat most medical students will immediately recognize as a meniscal tear. He returned to his job at the university and remained there until September. 1951. In September 1951. he returned to the University of Iowa and completed a Masters Degree in Special Education of the Physically Handicapped. Concurrently, he look another course in anatomy in which he excelled and enjoyed immensely. He found he preferred leaching, and the year after he obtained his Masters Degree he taught a class of physically handicapped grade school students. However, this was not completely fulfilling for him. Dr. Way then applied to the department of anatomy at the University of Iowa for admission to their doctoral program. He fulfilled his premed courses in a record amount of time and went on to start his Ph D. in 1951 and obtained his doctorate in I960. During this time he was a teaching assistant to occupational therapy, physical therapy and med students in anatomy. He continued on as a Post doctorate and joined the faculty in 1962. In the meantime. he developed a strong interest in the field of comparative ncuroanatomy investigating brains of armadillos, opossums, and anteaters. During his time as a postdoc he met Dr. David Allbrook, who at the time was head of the department of anatomy at the University of Makerere Medical School in Kampala, Uganda. He managed to keep in touch with him, and found himself in Australia teaching a course in neuroanatomy to medical students for two months in the summer of 1966. He enjoyed this experience immensely and returned home to the U.S. and proclaimed to his wife that they were going to Australia in March of the following year. Unfortunately. due to the death of a faculty member in the department at the University of Iowa, their journey was postponed until June 1967. His 26 month stay in Australia was very enjoyable and he returned to the U.S. with mixed feelings in 1969. He then joined Temple University’s Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology in the Pall of 1969. when recruited by-friend and colleague Dr. Ray Truex. Dr. Way had met Dr. Truex in conferences and had kept in touch by sending him “hearts” from different native Australian animals for research. Dr. Way taught medical, dental, occupational therapy and physical therapy students and continued his research in ncuroanatomy until his retirement in January. 1994. He was well liked by the students and faculty and w ill always be remembered by the students who were fortunate enough to be taught by him. He always looked for a way to make students enjoy their learning experience in neuroanatomy and general anatomy with his enthusiasm, humor and easy demeanor. Dr. Way is a well-travelled man who has been to almost every continent. Some of the places that he has been privileged to visit include the Amazon. Australia. Austria. Bali, the Central African Republic. China. Fiji. France. Germany. Holland. Italy, the Philippines. Poland and Thailand. He recounts many tales of his travels. 5 Janet Quiz and John prior to marriage. The Ways (1957) In one tale, he tells of how he was visiting this eldest son. who was at the time in the Central African republic working in the Peace Corps. He befriended the local pygmies and spent some lime with them sleeping in the bush and scouting for wild elephants along the swamps. One night in particular he had an almost ethereal experience when he described the moon as being so bright that it blinded his eyes to look at it directly. It was a never to be forgotten experience. Another tale is that of a trip to the Philippines where his daughter and son-in-law were stationed. His son-in-law directed a naval research unit. They had to live under strict conditions, and he saw his son-in-law only a few days out of the month he visited because the Philippine rebel army blamed him and his colleagues for the introduction of AIDS and some other infectious diseases into the Philippines. He recounts being driven in armored cars and never taking the same route from the house. He then recounts talcs from his numerous trips to China where he was hospitalized after being in a motor vehicle accident and also of returning with his brother and his sister-in-law, a China bom woman, who left her home in Shanghai 50 years earlier when she tied the country during World War II. In June 1951, he married a fellow graduate student by the name of Janet Gutz and they had five wonderful children together. Janet obtained a Masters degree in Guidance and Counselling and then went on to work as an administrative assistant in the College of Nursing in Iowa. Their children are Kathleen. Margaret. Benjamin. Steven and John and he also has five beautiful grandchildren. Currently, he spends his re- tirement planning trips and remodelling his home. He says the days seem to go so quickly and he exclaimed that he was like a proverbial chicken without a head running around trying to do so many things. In the words of John S. Way. we will keep it simple and say that, it is with great pleasure and pride that the class of 1997 honors Dr. Way with the dedication of the 1997 Skull. —Bunmi Bccklcy Dr. Way at retirement party with faculty members. The hood’s silken lining is the color of the university conferring the degree, and the velvet indicates the special area of study. The colors of Temple University are cherry red and while; dark green represents medicine. Hoodcrs are individuals who symbolically bestow our degrees upon us. Each year the senior class chooses four individuals to place Academic Hoods upon us at our graduation ceremony. These distinguished individuals were selected not only for superb quality of teaching, but also for their hard work and dedication to the Class and Temple University School of Medicine. Our four years in medical school have been easier and more enjoyable due to individuals such as these, and they have served as great inspirations to us all. Hooders for the Class of 1997 are: Dr. Richard Eisenstaedt. Deputy Chair, Department of Internal Medicine; Dr. Bennett Lorber, Section Chief, Infectious Diseases; Dr. Sally Rosen. Associate Dean for Student Affairs; Dr. Gerald Sterling. Department of Pharmacology. On behalf of the Class of 1997, the yearbook staff wishes to thank each of them for the time they have taken to guide us through the beginning stages of our medical careers. Sally Rosen. Success brings hope, hope inspires fresh desire, and desire gives zest to life and joy to labor. This is true whether your days be spent in the palaces of the powerful or in some little green byway of the world. Therefore, while yet you have the strength, cherish a desire to do some useful work in your little comer of the world, and have the steadfastness to labor. For this is the way to the happy life: with health and endearing ties, it is the way to the glorious life. Amy M. Evangelisto. M.D. YEARBOOK STATEMENT FOR BRA I) PADDOCK Although I was born in New Jersey, my family moved to Florida when I was very young. As a boy. my goal was to play professional football. In high school. I played for South Plantation High, where my coach. Nunme Robinson, taught me a great deal about life as well us football. I attended Duke University on a football scholarship. My freshman year. 1 got injured, worked hard to come back from my injury, then showed a great deal of potential Each subsequent year. I repeated the same cycle of injury, setback, comeback, and excellence. After my third operation. 1 realized that my dream of becoming a professional football player would never be realized. I decided to put my economics degree to use by going into banking. I worked for a year as a financial analyst for a large savings and loan in Miami. My future was bright, but I still felt that something was missing in my life. Since the end of my football career. I had been searching for other sources of personal fulfillment. During the course of my introspection. 1 looked to my religion. I became increasingly disillusioned with business, as I perceived that my only reward would be money. 1 began looking at careers that were more rewarding in terms of non-financial gratification. I feel that those w ho are most in need of service arc those w ho arc ill Improving a person’s health not only improves his her quality of life directly, but also indirectly, by giving that person the strength and capacity to achieve his her ow n goals. Aftet much soul searching. I found the courage to make major changes in my life, and I left my banking job to pursue medicine. I returned to school as a post-baccalaureate student at the University of Pennsylvania in order to fulfill premedical course requirements. Later, while waiting to start medical school at Temple. I worked full-time as a nuclear medicine technician's assistant Throughout medical school my career decision has been confirmed. The abundant opportunities to help people arc greatly satisfying, and 1 feel that I am in the right place. Additionally, the acquisition of scientific knowledge is intellectually stimulating to me. As I went from one rotation to the next. I enjoyed all of them. Throughout medical school, my brother Scott w as a great source of support. £ it' fD ____________ I I decided upon the specialty of Family Practice at the end of my third year of medical school Having enjoyed all of my clinical rotations, I knew that I would like to practice a little of each area of Medicine, and that no other specialty would give me the breadth of knowledge and opportunity that Family Practice offers. Additionally. I enjoy treating the “whole patient . Most patients have diverse health care needs. The specialist addresses one or two of those needs. In Family Practice, I feel that I can best meet all of my patients’ needs. Although my experience with athletics ended in disappointment. I appreciate that the same qualities I learned by playing football - dedication, persistence, diligence, and teamwork • have enabled me to be successful in other areas Focusing my efforts on my goal of becoming a physician. I have done well in medical school. I believe that these same qualities w ill allow me to be a successful physician. Abington combines the variable educational opportunities of a large hospital with a diverse outpatient experience that I was looking for in a Family Practice Residency. Either inpatient or outpatient. I am able to see many diseases in many different psychosocial situations. Also, a friendly approachable staff makes an excellent chance to learn easily. Robert Hermann. M.D., Temple ’96 — Family Practice I chose Abington because it offers the best of both worlds — a community hospital with a strong academic focus. The attendings and other residents are approachable, dedicated to leaching and providing excellent patient care. The training that I have received has prepared me to practice anywhere Lean no Bcidlcr, M.D., Temple '94 — Family Practice Abington offers an excellent clinical facility with a wide range of teaching cases and the academics of a university program all provided in a friendly community setting.” Deborah H. Junkin, D.M.D., Temple ’95 —Dentistry If you want a great foundation in OB GYN. Abington is the place. The new LDRP delivery suites allow for state-of-the-art obstetrical training. The strong presence of all of the subspecialities plus the absence of Fellows ensures an outstanding surgical and academic experience. Compared to oilier programs. Abington residents do more hands-on surgery, more high-risk Obstetrics and more Gynecology. Plus, the community environment makes residency less a painful rite of passage and more a natural part of your ongoing medical education. Joseph Zebrowitz, M.D., Temple '94 — OB GYN “Abington Memorial Hospital offers a suburban-based residency which, for me. is the population I intend to serve in the future. There is a strong emphasis on primary care — health maintenance — and patients who are motivated toward that goal. University affiliation allows for exposure to individuals with a w ide variety of diagnoses and the opportunity to broaden one's knowledge base following these individuals over time. Barbara Gavin. M.D., Temple ’94 —Internal Medicine “I chose Abington's Surgical Residency Program because of the program's dedication to turning out well-rounded general surgeons who can compete in practically any field, whether as a well-founded general surgeon or a resident qualified for almost any type of Fellowship. Plus, you have all of the benefits of a large community hospital. Jessica Palumbo, M.D.. To our Classmates: From Gross Anatomy to Graduation and everything in between, our class has shared laughter and tears while making memories during our medical education at Temple. Our years together have come to an end and there has been much fun along the way. We have attempted to capture these fond memories from first to fourth year in this book and hope this w ill serve as a keepsake of our years together. While dealing with sub-internship, interviews and away rotations we were able to compile a book reflective of our memories w hile in school. With a lot of time and effort (and a bit of luck) we acquired photographs and ideas from our class and created an enduring memory. We would especially like to thank our staff for endless hours of near exhaustion as well as sheer enthusiasm, even in the face of impending deadlines! We found that w ith a touch of perfectionism and an endless supply of white-out we could accomplish anything. We also w ould like to thank our advisor. Kenneth Cundy. Cheryl Arthur, whose title never quite described her invaluable role: the Dean's Office, for fielding phone calls and collecting pictures; and Merin Studios, who provided us w ith excellent photography services and materials. In addition, we would like to thank Lou Guarrieri.
