TEMPLE LWIVER ITT SCHOOL OF NEDICLVE 3400 X. BROAD STOEET 1 1111 AOE1JMIIA. I A 10140 10 SENIORS STUDENT LIFE 252 FACULTY 342 RESIDENCES 350 ADVERTISERS He greeted us freshman year with his overview of anatomy and his breakdown of the medical student work-week, reminding us to take time for ourselves and our families. He guided us through our basic sciences, utilizing his homemade embryology models, his histology Kodachromes and his reassuring sense of humor. He insured our success in the clinical sciences by providing us with both a solid foundation in anatomy and insight into problem solving. These words were written in the 1993 SKULL about J. Robert Troyer, PhD., the year he retired after forty years of service to Temple University School of Medicine. Dr. Troyer taught Gross Anatomy, Ncuroanatomy, Embryology, and Histology for 39 years. After obtaining his AB degree from Syracuse University in 1949 and his Ph.D. in Histology and Embryology from Cornell University, he began his distinguished career at Temple in 1954 as an Instructor of Anatomy. He was promoted to Assistant Professor in 1959, Associate Professor in 1963, full Professor in 1969, and finally. Chair of the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology in 1978, a position he held until his retirement in 1993. Dr. Troyer's prolific career produced numerous publications, including research papers, abstracts, and textbook chapters. Most of his research centered on neurosecretion in hibernating animals and cmbryologic abnormalities. By far, Dr. Troyer will be remembered most by the faculty and students for his ability to teach. Thousands of Temple medical students through the years have witnessed his creative teaching methods and attempts to get his students to visualize the developing embryo in three dimensions as he rotated plastic bags, twisted balloons and climbed ladders in front of the classroom. He contributed over 450 hours of teaching each year, including laboratory and didactic lectures, as well as outstanding review sessions prior to major exams and national boards. It was this dedication that earned him 22 teaching awards during his tenure. Among these were several Golden Apple Awards for outstanding teaching; the nationally renowned Lind-back Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1972; and the George A. Sowell Award for Teaching Excellence in the Basic Sciences in 1982; and in 1989, he received a Temple University Great Teacher Award. He was also the first John Franklin Huber Professor of Anatomy. In 1990, the Anatomy department honored him by establishing the J. Robert Troyer Award, which is given annually to the medical student with the highest cumulative grade point average in all four courses taught by the Department. His contributions to Temple were acknowledged on many occasions, including having three yearbooks dedicated to him and participating as a hoodcr in four graduation cont. on page 7 Making music with sister Joan. Dr. Troycr is also the first individual to have the yearbook dedicated in his honor posthumously. When interviewed shortly before his retirement in June 1993, he told the On Call newsletter that his most significant contribution to Temple Medical School was heading a curriculum committee of 200 faculty and student members, whose task it was to determine a core curriculum containing the minimum material students should know after completing four years. He was pleased that they produced a curriculum that lasted 17 years. Dr. Troycr's sincere concern for students, despite his many responsibilities and obligations, was quite evident over the years. He was passionately concerned about the quality of instruction students received, stating in the same 1993 interview, Temple medical students deserve outstanding teaching. And as any of the many Temple students who had him as an instructor can attest to, outstanding teaching is just what they received. Sadly, Dr. Troycr passed away on September 10,1993 after a battle with leukemia. Despite his illness, he continued to teach with the enthusiasm and ingenuity that permeated his career. He always had a kind or funny word, and a ready smile and twinkle in his eye. As members of the last class that he taught, we were fortunate enough to have had this special man touch upon our lives. Although we may forget what becomes of the pharyngeal pouches and brachial arches, we will never forget Dr. Troycr's warmth, approachability, and sense of humor. It is with great pride that we, the Class of 1996, dedicate our yearbook to Dr. J. Robert Troyer. Dr. Troyer and wife Ruth with David and Susan, Mother's Day, 1960. The hood’s silken lining is the color of ihc university conferring the degree, and the velvet indicates the special area of study. The colors of Temple University arc cherry red and white; dark green represents medicine. Hooders are individuals who symbolically bestow our degrees upon us. Each year the senior class chooses four individuals to place Academic Hoods upon us at our graduation ceremony. These distinguished individuals were selected not only for superb quality of teaching, but also for their hard work and dedication to the Class and Temple University School of Medicine. Our four years in medical school have been easier and more enjoyable due to individuals such as these, and they have served as great inspirations to us all. Hooders for the Class of 1996 are: Dr. Concelta Ifarakal, Professor Ementus of Pharmacology: Dr. Carson Schneck, Acting Chairperson. Department of Anatomy and course director for Gross Anatomy: Dr. Ronald Tuma, Chairperson and Professor of Physiology; and Dr. John S. Way. Professor Emeritus of Anatomy and Cell Diology. On behalf of the Class of 1996. the yearbook staff wishes to thank each of them for the time they have taken to guide us through the beginning stages of our medical careers. As much as this degree means to me, her coming into this world is by far our greatest accomplishment. My wife, Bcrmanie, and I are very fortunate to have her. To my parents, this medical degree is a source of personal pride as they managed to teach their children to dream and to be bold enough to go after and achieve their highest goals. I credit my success to them as I only had to walk the road that they worked so hard to pave for me. I thank them from the bottom of my heart. To my family, this degree represents the sweet fruit of hard sacrifices that we had to make in an effort to make this a reality. I thank my wife. Bermanie, for her strong support and her incredible understanding without which, 1 contend, none of this would be possible. To my six-month old Sade Imani, I hope this degree will help provide a nurturing and supportive environment conducive to personal and educational growth. To my friends and other relatives, who are too numerous to mention, I simply say “Thanks!” To those who believed and supported me, your faith in me was my backbone. To those who had doubts about my chances, your skepticism served as positive energy which fueled me along the way. I will forever be grateful to all of you! To me, this medical degree represents the culmination of a long and arduous road filled with potholes and at times seemingly insurmountable obstacles. It is a living proof that hard work and perseverance ultimately pay off. I also learned that goals are never too lofty to be reached and courage, effort, and persistence can make a reality of the most remote and improbable dreams. Poth j 134 Shavm Puppala The Fisherman’s Dream Sometimes when pressures grow too great, it’s wise to pause and temper your gait. To seek a spot in the quiet zone, a gentile place for man alone, Picture it now in your mind’s eye, a sleepy sun, a lazy sky. With virgin timber of towering height, a hideaway—no soul in sight, Hear the gull scream his plaintive call, relax and let peace reign above all, Now lie on the bank of that crystal stream, follow a cloud, dream a dream. Then cast a line to that shady nook, feel the jolt as the Fish slams the hook. Take it easy, don’t horse him—just let him go, respect his power, play him slow. He’s almost yours now, but no, not yet, what a ridiculous time to drop the net. Oh well, no matter, it was all just a wish, and there’s more to Fishing than catching a fish. There is no greater formula for success in one’s own life than deliberately seeking out the needs in other people’s lives and then devotedly Filling them. Thank you Mom and Dad. The very righteous presume know I know and create edifices from dogma and canon in which to relive their tradition — sin is the notion of going outside the established bounds. But the Universe is more than a small, safe zone in which one is spared the pain of decision — it is immense and tumultuous — full of surprise where sometimes good things turn out badly and bad things turn out good, and choice may not be between good and bad but bad and worse, and sometimes a valid solution may be none of the above. The pilgrim acknowledges think don't know and seeks the understanding to find Oneness with the Universe. If lucky, the journey will discover the Buddha is the Buddha only to the Buddha — one’s own path is the enlightened Way to become all of what we can be — and the unanswered question that unlocks the unlived life within us is “What do I want”. Some of us enjoy a brief moment of know I don't know — unhampered by all preconceptions, unrestrained by expectations, free of guilt and worry we now become fully open to realize who we really are. We discover we are a part of not apart from everybody and the true answer to the question “For what am I” is “Not for my own sake . The few ticks of magical aha roll us back to think I know. Today you again graduate. We stand up and cheer your commitment, hard work and accomplishment. Today you are also ready to go out and continue to learn. LONG, M.D. Your perseverance through all the adversity that you have experienced in your life in the past eight years has made me respectfully envious of your accomplishments. You are truly “everything I wish I could be”. J've told you repeatedly that becoming a doctor is the greatest accomplishment any human being could achieve, but I feel that I have topped that by having “my hero” accept my hand in marriage. I am truly, truly proud of your accomplishments but I know that I'm not as proud as I’ll be for the accomplishments that are in your future. Cousins 381 TEMPLE GRADUATES OF 1996 The moment is at hand! Some good dreams do come true. From the first personal belief in oneself as a potential physician and healer, through all those premed courses and laboratories, to life beyond the MCATs, and to life beyond Gross Anatomy, you have progressed, grown, and at last approached the portal called “physician”. It is time to celebrate and to rejoice. It is also time to reflect. Graduation is also Commencement — new beginnings. Poised to enter your respective residencies, you will glean in the upcoming years vast amounts of clinical technology and skill. These years must also be the initial years of gaining essential elements in the art and wisdom of medicine. The wisdom of medicine has many components. It begins with a belief in the goodness of life, in the richness of loving nurturing relationships and in the bounty of service. It can grow if nourished with a personal faith, commitment to family and self within that family, with time to laugh and play and with a sense of joy that hard, but fulfilling, work can provide. It matures with the physician recognizing that healing must be addressed to the whole person. A well body with a troubled mind is a troubled person. A medically healthy child or spouse who is physically or psychologically battered is an unhappy, but also, unhealthy person. Conversely, the patient for whom technology provides no cure can receive succor with the sensitive compassion of a caring physician. And so, we wish you well on this sojourn, may it be a journey of many miles and many rewards, a journey of service and of wisdom. Six Temple grads tell why they chose Abington Memorial Hospital. Abington is a well respected, large suburban hospital that retains excellent academics without losing its community feeling. I think patients receive excellent care at this institution and I have referred members of my own family here. I enjoy having residents in other specialities to curb-side consult — everyone is very friendly and approachable. As I was born at AMH, I feel like 1 have come full circle by completing my residency training here! Karen Bader. M.D., Temple '93 — Family Practice I chose Abington because of its broad hospital resources and support for patients in the hospital and at home. There arc friendly, cooperative residents in all of the departments. Abington has true dedication to teaching, a great approachable attending staff, and a broad patient base to help you learn to treat the same disease in many different psychosocial contexts. Veronique Bart man, M.D., Temple ’93 — Family Practice Abington offers an excellent clinical facility with a wide range of teaching cases and the academics of a university program all provided in a friendly community setting. Deborah FI. Junkin, D.M.D., Temple ’95 — Dentistry I came to Abington Hospital because I wanted an excellent surgical training program combined with the attributes of a community hospital. Mark Zeblcy, M.D., Temple 89 — Surgery Abington Memorial Hospital offers a suburban-based residency which, for me. is the population I intend to serve in the future. There is a strong emphasis on primary care — health maintenance — and patients who arc motivated toward that goal. University affiliation allows for exposure to individuals with a wide variety of diagnoses and the opportunity to broaden one's knowledge base following these individuals over lime.” Barbara Gavin. M.D., Temple ’94 —Internal Medicine The diverse community population and the incredible academic program provide the best of both worlds, giving me training equal or superior to any other program. May your futures be filled with health, happiness, and love. WE DID ITU! PARTING SHOTS... A last look at the Class of 1996 397 From Angela and Monique, to our fellow classmates: As unbelievable as it may seem, our medical school careers have finally come to an end. From Gross Anatomy lab to the cramped seats of Kresgc A B to our clinical clerkships, we have shared many experiences - some good, some bad. Our goal in putting this yearbook together was to capture as many of those moments as we could. While dealing with the never-ending demands of fourth year (subinternships, residency applications, interviews, and rotations), we also had the formidable task of generating a book reflective of our four years at Temple. We hope this book will serve as a keepsake, a reminder of friendships made and relationships built. We would like to thank all who helped us with this task. Special thanks go to Vito. Melissa, and Lan for their creativity and lending a hand when we were really in a bind. We are especially grateful to Karolynn and her staff for working tirelessly to raise the funds needed to get this book published. A very special thanks to those parents, faculty, alumni, and businesses who supported SKULL '96 financially with their contributions. Lastly, wc must thank Dr. Kenneth Cundy, Dr. Sally Rosen, the Dean’s Office staff. Cheryl Arthur, and Mcrin Studios for their lime, energy and patience. In addition, we thank Lou Guarrieri for his technical advice, flexibility, and suggestions. And. of course, we also appreciate the support of our friends and families - especially around deadline time! Wc wish the Class of 1996 the best of health, luck, and success as wc go on to the next phase of our careers. Hope to sec you all at reunions! 1996 SKULL STAFF Co-Editors Angela C.
