continued from page 8 quality residents, and Temple is enjoying a fantastic reputation for producing outstanding surgeons. We will surely miss Dr. Ritchie’s presence as Temple’s Chief of Surgery, but realize his new position with die American Board of Surgery will allow him to exert his positive influence in a much bigger way. The American Board of Surgery sets rigorous standards of testing and certifying surgeons, maintains a high standard for educating students, plans curriculum, and fields surgical questions from the general public. The Board also plays a major role in surgical legislation and serves as the spokesman for general surgeons in this country. In short, die American Board of Surgeons is the conscience of American surgery today. Sounds like a very lough job indeed, but knowing Dr. Ritchie, he’ll do it just fine. He admits that it might be more difficult for established physicians to adjust to these changes than those of us just beginning to practice. But one thing is guaranteed to remain constant.... the caring of patients will continue. No matter what you arc interested in or what you end up doing, the patient will always come first. Unfortunately, this is Dr. Ritchie’s last year as Temple's Chief of Surgery. He says he is proud to have participated in all aspects of academic surgery here at Temple, and has felt privileged to work with such outstanding individuals, faculty, residents and students alike. He speaks of his faculty members with fondness and calls them “incredible teachers. Of the residents and students, he is continually amazed at their diverse and interesting backgrounds. They come from incredible places and have done many incredible things. He has enjoyed supporting and nurturing these young surgeons-to-be and gets great pleasure from watching them grow. All-in-all. Dr. Ritchie feels he is leaving Temple’s surgery department in great shape for his successor. “The program is running well, we have very high continued on page 9 8 Skull

A very special thank you... Hoods are a relic of medievalism in modem academic life. The hood's silken lining is the color of the University, and the velvet indicates the special area of study. The colors of Temple University arc Cherry Red and White; dark green represents medicine. Hooders symbolically bestow our degrees upon us. Each year the senior class chooses four individuals to place Academic Hoods upon us at our graduation ceremony. Hooders for the Class of 1994 are: Dr. Carson Schneck, Acting Chairperson, Department of Anatomy and course director for Human Gross Anatomy; Dr. Michael Wang, course director for Medical Physiology; Dr. Concctta Harakal, course director for Medical Pharmacology; Ms. Gloria Greenberg, Curriculum Coordinator. These distinguished individuals were selected not only for superb quality of teaching, but for their hard work and dedication to the class and Temple University School of Medicine. Our four years in medical school have been easier and more enjoyable due to individuals such as these, and they have served as great inspirations to us all. The yearbook staff, on behalf of the Class of 1994, wishes to thank each of you for the time you have taken to guide us through the beginning stages of our medical careers.
