Reflections from Rose To niv classmates: As the first part of our medical education comes to a conclusion, so closes this book. Through pictures and words, we have attempted to capture a flavor and feeling of the time we have spent at Temple. In addition to viewing this yearbook today as a composition of the trials and triumphs which we call medical school, I hope that you will be able to look at this book in the future, and remember our friendships with fondness. It is said that the journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step, and I think that we have done an exceptional job of capturing this first step in The Skull. I would like to thank the many members of our class for their contributions towards this book. Your endless hours of dedication and hard work have made Skull '93 a publication which reflects the quality and caliber of the education we received at Temple. We went to great lengths to ensure that each member of our class is represented here, and regret that resources and photo availability have prevented us from including everyone as often as we would have liked. The past several years have been a time of growth and development for all of us. We have gone from reading Embryology to delivering babies. Some of us have witnessed additions to our own families, and all of us have made countless new friends. We will take many things with us when we leave Temple, and I hope that this book offers an excellent sample of these treasures. Once again, I would like to thank all those who have helped to make this work a success, and most of all, I would like to thank all of my classmates for making medical school a special time in my life. Until we meet again, my friends . . . “Be skilled, be learned, be aware of the dignity of your calling. But please don’t ever lose sight of your own simple humanity ... I ask of you, possess your skills, but don’t be possessed by them. You are entering a very select group. You have a monopoly on medical care. Please be careful not to abuse this power that you have over the rest of the people . . . Thank you for taking on the enormous responsibility that you have — and for having the strength to have made it to this day. I don’t know how you’ve managed to learn it all. But there is one more thing you can learn about the body that only a non doctor would tell you — and I hope you’ll always remember: the head bone is connected to the heart bone. Don’t let them come apart.” Good Luck! Alan Alda M'A'S'H DEDICA TION Ellen Tedaldi, M.D. Associate Professor of Internal Medicine If you met Dr. Ellen Tedaldi on a street corner you might not guess that she is a physician. You probably wouldn’t realize that she is an expert on HIV disease. You may not even appreciate that she has volunteered as a physician in Central America or that she was AOA in medical school. What would strike you, however, about Dr. Tedaldi is that she is a warm, caring and energetic individual who will go out of her way to do whatever she can for you. These qualities have enabled her many accomplishments, and it is because of these qualities that the class of 1993 dedicates our yearbook. The Skull, to Dr. Ellen Tedaldi. Dr. Tedaldi was bom in Toledo, Ohio, and then moved to Japan with her father who was in the Navy. The oldest of seven children in an Italian-Irish household in Yonkers, New York, she developed a sense of responsibility, service and lead: ership at an early age. While in Japan, Dr. Tedaldi contracted polio and was confined to a body cast for the sixth, seventh and eighth grades. Despite this setback, she went on to excel in high school, becoming president of her senior class. It was during this time that Dr. Tedaldi began to develop social awareness. In addition to holding part-time jobs since the age of fifteen. Dr. Tedaldi was also involved as a teenage mentor for inner-city youths of Harlem. Although her high school guidance counselor felt that a career in nursing would best suit Dr. Tedaldi and her family, she was determined to become a physician. Going on to college and majoring in Biology, Dr. Tedaldi continued to investigate the many opportunities available in the field of medicine. Taking time off during college, Dr. Tedaldi began to volunteer as an assistant in Clinical Research at a hospital in the South Bronx. Performing pulmonary function tests, radionuclide scanning and data collection provided her with insight into some of the aspects of medicine in an inner city. Dr. Tedaldi completed her Bachelor of Science degree at Cornell University in 1976. Having concentrated in anatomy and physiology and having served as a research assistant certainly prepared Dr. Tedaldi for the challenge of a medical education. yet she credits another experience with providing the best preparation for medical school. “Being a waitress. she recounts, “is probably the best preparation for medical school. It is a service oriented position, where you interact with all different types of people and must respond to a variety of individual needs.” Whatever foundation Dr. Tedaldi built her medical education on, it ELLEN TEDALDI, M.D. I 7 surely was solid as she continued to excel as a medical student. In 1980 Dr. Tedaldi received her Doctor of Medicine from SUNY-Buffalo, after being inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. Being attracted by the challenge of Internal Medicine, Dr. Tedaldi served her medical residency at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She was intrigued by the difference between the midwest and her home in Yonkers. Dr. Tedaldi stayed at Hennepin County as Chief Medical Resident where she refined many of the clinical and teaching skills which are so evident to us a Temple. During this time, she also developed another interest. Taking a six week vacation. Dr. Tedaldi went down under to Australia and discovered scuba diving, an activity which she continues to enjoy. She jokingly states that one day she will open a clinic in the Caribbean; the mornings for the patients of the land, and the afternoons for the creatures of the sea. The ability to manage a variety of medical conditions is what drew Dr. Tedaldi to remain in General Internal Medicine, however, the satisfaction of working with a diverse population is what drew her back to the East Coast. Returning to New York City, Dr. Tedaldi took a position as an Associate in Internal Medicine and Clinical Medicine at the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center. Once again in the melting pot. Dr. Tcdaldi’s sense of social responsibility became evident. In 1986 she came to Temple University, and became an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine and Section Chief of General Internal Medicine in 1991. These positions she holds today. In addition to her many administrative and patient care responsibilities. Dr. Tedaldi is admired by us all for her academic contributions to medical education at Temple. As an attending on the ward service, many of us have been able to experience first-hand her compassion towards the ill, her approach-ability as a teacher and her expert skills as a clinician. Dr. Tedaldi’s greatest impact on the Class of 1993, however, came at one of the most exciting — and intimidating — parts of our education: physical diagnosis. During the Introduction to Clinical Medicine, Dr. Tedaldi was instrumental in transforming us into clinicians by providing us with the skills necessary to perform a complete history and physical examination. Most of us felt at least some apprehension the first time we were to perform the exams, and some of our faces were as pale as the crisp new labcoats we wore (with pock full of every diagnostic instrument a' manual 8 known to medicine). Each one of us. however, got through this monumental time, and most of us can tribute Dr. Tedaldi with easing some of our anxieties and calming some of our fears. It was not only the facts about the H and P that Dr. Tedaldi provided us with. Her endless energy, her thoughtful teaching, and. most of all, her ability to treat us as peers made physical diagnosis a rewarding educational experience. The ability to perform an H and P is crucial to our education and will be critical in our medical careers, and we thank Dr. Tedaldi for providing us with such a solid foundation. To know Dr. Tedaldi is to know that she is dedicated to care for those suffering from AIDS, and has become widely known for her work. She is also a board members for the Philadelphia FIGHT (Field Initiating Group for HIV Trials) and is the Internist in the Family Care Clinic at St. Christopher’s where she cares for the HIV positive parents of pediatric patients. She has made multiple presentations about HIV disease on numerous occasions throughout Pennsylvania. Dr. Tedaldi participates in many other activities within the School of Medicine. She is a member of the Educational Advisory Committee, the Residents Admission Committee and the Committee on the Status of Women Faculty. In addition to having a medical practice crammed with caring for patients and teaching students. Dr. Tedaldi has recently become a wife and is soon to become a mother. Calling all of their friends together for a Halloween party. Dr. Tedaldi and her husband. Lonnie, surprised the costumed group by announcing that this would be their wedding reception. She and Lonnie were married at a small ceremony, and the costume party which followed provided for an unforgettable reception. Dr. Tedaldi expects that many aspects of her life will change as motherhood develops, and she is excited about the many rewards her new family will offer. Dr. Tedaldi has had a unique entrance into the medical field, and continued to develop her practice in a remarkable wav. She offers this advice to the Gass of 1993, “Don’t forget the reason why you have chosen medicine. If you remember that you arc part of a helping profession arid that you are there tor the patients, then everything involved with your careers will be much more worthwhile.” Thank you for these words Dr. Tedaldi, but most of all thank you for the countless actions which have made you an unparalleled role model for each of us. 9 Each year four faculty mem-6ers are cfiosen to place Academic Hoods upon the members of the graduating class. The people whom we have chosen have not only been superb instructors, but have also been great inspirations to us. Thanh you Jot your time and dedication. J. Robert Troyer, Ph.D. Chair, Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology Concetta HarafcaC PfuD. Course Director, Pharmacology HOODERS Carson D. Schnecfc, M.D., PfuD. Course Director, Human Gross Anatomy Hoods are a relic of medievalism in modem academic hje. The hood’s silken lining is the color of the University, and the velvet indicates the special area oj study. Temple’s colors are Cherry Red and White; dark green velvet represents medicine. Hooders symbolically bestowe our degrees upon us. Richard S. Eisenstaedt, M.D. Clerkship Director, Internal Medicine 10 A SPECIAL THANK YOU He greeted us freshman year with fiis overview of anatomy and his breakdown of the medical student work-week, reminding us to take time for ourselves and our families. He guided us through our basic sciences, utilizing his home-made embryology models, his histology Kotachromes and his reassuring sense of humor. He insured our success in the clinical sciences by providing us with both a solid foundation in anatomy and insight into problem soCv-ing. Dr. Troyer's contribution to our education far exceeds what any textbooks or laboratory could provide. He was committed to molding us into pfiysicians — and not only was he successful — he was unequaled. We were honored to have him as a hooder on graduation day. After receiving his BA from Syracuse University, Dr. Troyer went on to earn a PfuD. in Histology and Embryology from Cornell University. He began teaching at Temple University School of Medicine in 1954 as an Instructor of Anatomy. From that time on, his ingenuity and warmth were apparent to all as he became an Assistant Professor in 1959, an Associate Professor in 1963, a full Professor in 1969 and finally Cfuiir of the Department of Anatomy in 1979. Dr. Troyer has held this position ever since. Dr. Troyer's contributions to Temple University School of Medicine have been acknowledged on many occasions, including several Golden Apple Awards for outstanding teaching and yearbook dedications in 1967 and 1986. In 1972, Dr. Troyer received the nation- ally renown Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching, and in 1982, he was awarded the George Lowed Prize for Teaching Excellence in the Basic Sciences. In 1989, he received a Temple University Great Teacher Award. At the end of this academic year, Dr. Troyer will be retiring from his position as Chair of the Department of Anatomy, nearly forty years after coming to Temple. Dr. Troyer's many contributions to the school of medicine are greatly appreciated and will surely be missed. As members of the Class of 1993, we would like to thank Dr. Troyer for his dedication towards our education and his inpm into our lives. Although we may have forgotten which pharyngeal arch becomes the thyroid (fourth?), we will never forget your warmth, appro achabihty and sense of humor. Dr. Troyer, we feel very fortunate to have had you as an Anatomy Professor, and we wish you the 6est as you now go and take time for yourself and your family. With the pressure of classes and the time commitment of hospital rotations, it is easy for students to leave behind the ideals of caring that led us into medical school. The American Medical Students Association at Temple has stood as an opportunity for students to remain involved in their commitments to community service, social justice, and political action. Among its many projects, in 1989 AMSA started the Students Teaching Aids To Students (STATS) program which continues today. We have also been involved in actively supporting women’s right to choose and have supported congressional bills to increase loan availability for students. We have participated in several Task Forces including Women in Medicine and Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual People in Medicine. 212 AMSA has consistently had a large contingency present at annual conventions, as in Kansas City, 1991. Students in their third and fourth years arc elected based on their scholastic excellence and the qualities of integrity, compassion and leadership exhibited on clinical rotations. Members are also elected from faculty and alumni recognizing achievement and leadership in their fields. With their faculty advisor, Dr. Michael B. Love, the Epsilon chapter promotes scholarship, high standards of conduct, and the recognition of these achievements in the medical profession. Honor Board As members of Honor Board, we are elected to encourage our classmates to uphold the tradition of personal and medical ethics as stated in the TUMS Honor Code. In addition, as an organization, we work to educate our classmates and the Temple University Medical Community about current medical ethics issues through lecture series and various media available through the library. 214 SNMA The Student National Medical Association is a focus group for diverse ethnic issues in medicine. SNMA has sponsored many educational and social events including guest speakers. Black History Month activities, and the symbolic black ribbons on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. The friendships we have made will be as long-lasting as the causes we have worked towards. On Call On Call is the Temple University School of Medicine’s monthly newsletter. Each month, a faculty member, student organization or public event that relates to our school is highlighted. Perhaps what most people remember about On Call, however, is the Student Organization Update, where important events such as engagements, weddings, and births were proudly announced. 215 Big Friends Big Friends is a unique program run by Temple medical student volunteers for the children of the TUH neighborhood. Children enrolled at Kenderton Elementary School who were identified as likely to benefit from our program participated as little friends. Community and personal service — this is the ideology of Big Friends. Our group functioned in several capacities: after school tutoring, educational field trips, guest speakers and social events. In an effort to encourage more personal interaction, many volunteers “adopted” a specific child. This evolved into a larger picture when Temple adopted Kenderton. While for some medical students this may have fulfilled the curriculum’s community service requirement, for many it was much more. Big Friends is investing in the children today for their future of tomorrows. 216 Student Council Student Council representatives undertook the task of organizing many class functions, providing information to the class regarding school policy, and communicating class concerns to Student Council, faculty, and the administration. Council members also worked closely with Dean Rosen and Gloria Greenberg to coordinate class lotteries, schedules, and graduation itself. In addition to the class representatives, many members and organization heads attended Council meetings and also added their voices and insights to the inner workings of the medical school. Behind the scenes, members were often the primary motivation for many social gatherings, particularly formals and post-exam picnics. 217 AMWA The American Medical Women’s Association is a group of medical students who plan activities and events geared towards the unique concerns of women physicians. Activities include speakers on women’s issues. Women’s History Month projects, and workshops on balancing career with a family. As the number of women physicians grows larger. AMWA is continually changing to meet their growing needs. Med Notes The Medical Notes Service worked with the students to publish written versions of the lectures twice a week. The service consisted entirely of medical students: a director, several photocopiers, an audiotape distributor, and class scribes. Students who subscribed to Med Notes received an invaluable study tool as well as an occasionally amusing diversion. 218 CMS The Christian Medical Society is a national interdenominational medical fellowship of doctors and students who share the Christian faith. Activities include ethics seminars with Dr. Low Bird, holiday outings with sponsor Dr. Steven Dunn, and food drives. Weekly meetings are a time of fellowship. Bible study and singing. OSR The Organization of Student Representatives was developed in 1970 to incorporate students into the governance of the Association of American Medical Colleges. Its primary role at Temple is to make students aware of the proceedings of the AAMC and U.S. Government which affect medical education. Activities include letter-writing campaigns, student surveys, and the OSR Housing Exchange for students during residency interviews. Family Medicine Interest Group The Family Medicine Interest Group was created to foster a greater awareness of the depth and role of the specialty. It also served as a meeting ground for those interested in the field. Students were sent to the annual convention held in Kansas City. Locally, they attended seminars such as the popular “Strolling Through the Match with Dr. Piotrowski. 4 219 PMS The Pennsylvania Medical Society, along with the American Medical Association, has several functions at the student level. It provides AM A benefits at a very discounted rate, supplements medical student education through local and national symposia and publications, and teaches medical students how they can influence national health care policy through political activism. Activities at Temple include providing refreshments to first years during exams, co-sponsoring the annual Summer Research opportunities Symposium, and offering blood pressure screening. We also host seminars on advanced Directives and Organ Donation as well as a panel discussion on the Use of Animals in Research. Members arc active in the Annual Moot Court as well as national conventions. So, no, PMS is not an organization which celebrates the monthly curse of womanhood! 220 THE WORLD THROUGH ROSE COLORED GLASSES. 221 Was that the phrenic nerve? The original exam was scheduled for June 11-12 It was the first time in memory that Pan I of the exam had been stolen before it was given, said ofTicials at the National Board of Medical Examiners To date, the exam has been canceled only at the one site, however Police are investigating the theft of the exam, taken from a locked room on campus. If. as it scores the exams from around the country this summer, the NBME determines that results seem unusual at any other sites, it will cancel these tests as well. NBME officials said To accommodate the Medical College of Wisconsin students, the school has moved the start of their third-year elective clerkships to after Sept. I. college spokeswoman Teranj Marphctia said. The school also will offer special review courses on the exam this summer. she said. Normally we don't offer review courses because then we would be viewed as a diploma mill, she said. But this was regarded as an unusual situation. In addition to the September exam date, the students will be able to take the Part I exam in June, she said. THE WISCONSIN theft follows two similar incidents within the past year, although those cases were not as serious and caused no exam cancellations, testing officials said. In both cases, the thefts occurred after the exams were given In the first incident, in June 1990. the NBME Part I exam was stolen from an unidentified site. That incident occurred nearly two months after 290 copies of the Medical College Admissions Test were stolen from the University of Texas in Austin About 12.000 students nationwide were scheduled to take the NBME Part I last month The exam also is open to international medical graduates, in preparation for eventual implementation of a single examination open to all. Until recently, IMGs could take only the Federation Licensing Exam, better known as the FLEX The U.S. Medical Licensing Exam, an amalgamation of the NBME and the FLEX, will be phased in from 1992 to 1995. So 5 becomes 4. 6 becomes 5 and so on and so forth Now the figure numbers should gel with the text of the handout. (I feel better, too.) Dr. Grosh is amazed at our high turnout. How do beer drinkers get away with chugging all that beer in a contest? Due to swallowing rapidly and deglutitive inhibition (refer to fig. 5). With each rapid swallow some beer gets into the esophagus. With each swallow the phary nx contracts and the UES relaxes. Peristaltic contractions, however, don't develop until after the last swallow. Yet, after the 1st swallow the LOS relaxes. Vagal activation continuously excites the inhibitory nt without allowing time for the excitatory nt to take over. Essentially the vagus n. is inhibiting the esophageal body and not allowing contractions to develop. Beer has easy access. A little foam lying in the LES will get washed away by secondary peristalsis. 318 Scribe: Caihryn McWilliams ANOTHER WHIRLWIND TOUR OF HEART DISEASE HOLD ON TO YOUR SEATS ... II HISTORICAL A. Your handout is supposedly very helpful and you may want to hold onto it for future reference. Of course, for a select group, burning it in front of Broad St. Eddie’s at lunchtime on Monday may be of great therapeutic value. Whatever turns your trick, so to speak ...
