Kenneth R. Cundy, Ph.D. Hospital Epidemiologist We are proud to dedicate SKULL 1992 to Dr. Kenneth R. Cundy for all he has given to the Class of 1992. As an educator, advisor, rugby mentor, and friend he approaches everything with zest and vigor. He has given us the extra something that made our years at Temple that much more gratifying. 1 expect a lot from myself, says Dr. Cundy, and 1 expect others to be equally self-critical. This is a motivating philosophy that has served those who came in contact with him in good stead. As an educator he feels, 'The sum majority of what is learned in medical school is not achieved through lectures alone. Those who were fortunate enough to have interacted with him in small groups or personally, know well his one-to-one style and have seen his commitment to Temple not only as an educator, but also as someone who has been dedicated to the University as a whole for twenty-seven years. 1 consider Temple as part of my family, says Dr. Cundy, and we certainly consider him as part of ours. Long before he knew what a diplococcus was Dr. Cundy lived in the farm belt of South Dakota and grew up in the shadow of the family Guernsey dairy business. He completed his undergraduate training at Stanford and received his Master's Degree in Microbiology at the University of Washington. He earned his Ph.D. in Comparative Pathology (Microbiology) at the University of California (Davis), and in 1965 Dr. Cundy began his postdoctoral fellowship here at Temple in Public Health and Clinical Microbiology, a program he would later come to direct. Here he has remained, proudly serving Temple in many capacities. In addition to his roles as professor and advisor, he serves as Course Director for the Microbiology Course, Chairman of the Second Year Progress Committee, Chairman of the Infection Control Committee, and Hospital Epidemiologist, and has served one term as President of the Medical Faculty Senate and three terms as President of the Temple University Faculty Senate. His enduring commitment to the Medical School has been recognized formally in 1976 and

Romance That Began in Okinawa Culminates in Marriage of Rock Springs Girl and Californian Atl Asx«ls Episcopal church In Cannrl, Calif,, was th« scene of an impreunr weddm ceremony at 4 o'clock the afternoon of November 30 when Capt F.lai Scfcia-ctattr of San Fcancoco became the bride of Kenneth R. Cundy of Berkeley. Calif. 1985 with two Golden Apple awards presented by the students in recognition of his teaching. The University has also honored him wilh the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1985 and the prestigious Stauffer Award for Distinguished Faculty Service in 1987. I lis dedication to being involved does not stop with Temple. Dr. Cundy serves on the Board of Directors for the Philadelphia Opera Guild, the Friends of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Sketch Club, and the Society Hill Town Watch. His church involvement and activity with their AIDS outreach program only add to this list of accomplishments. Dr. Cundy and Elsie, his wife of 35 years, whom he met when she was an Army nurse and both were in the military service on Okinawa in 1955, reside in their beautifully restored home in the Society Hill section of the city. In 1957 she retired after 22 years in the Nurse Corps, and worked as a nurse at Temple Hospital until her second retirement in 1988. They share pride in the home that they have created and are looking forward to Dr. Gundy's retirement. Retirement will give us time to spend together, he says. Even as they look forward to new ventures. Dr. and Mrs. Cundy continue to share in all they do for Temple and their rich investment in the community. Dr. Cundy is formally retiring at the end of this year, which will be a great loss to the School of Medicine; however, it will be hard to keep him away. He already has several projects to continue at Temple after retirement. 1 will miss most being able to watch students grow, says Dr. Cundy. My dual existence at the hospital and med school lets me see them develop into fine clinicians. We owe much of that development to people like him. He takes what ho does seriously, yet his humor and good nature color his demonstrations and even break tensions before exams. He will be sorely missed. Dr. Cundy continues to give much to medical education and for this reason we, the Class of 1992, acknowledge his efforts and kindness by dedicating our yearbook to a man of excellence — Dr. Kenneth R. Cundy.
