In 1978 he became Director of the Blood Bank at Temple University Hospital. His duties have since expanded to include Deputy Director for Clinical Affairs and Oncology in the Section of Hematology Oncology and advancement to the rank of Associate Professor. Dr. Eisenstaedt has involved himself in the Temple community, serving on the Admissions Committee, the Faculty Senate Steering Committee, and the Medical Residency Selection and Advisory-Committees. Ills interest in medical education has continued to grow as demonstrated by his planning and participating in the alternative Hematology course. His skill as a medical educator has been appreciated and recognized by the student body. In 1984 he received the Golden Apple Award for distinguished teaching and In 1987 the Russel P. Moses Award for excellence in clinical teaching. Dr. Eisenstaedt's life is more than medicine. Recently married. his wife Haney, a Bostonian by accent and birth, operates a cooking school. A dedicated runner, he has been seen running down Broad Street at rush hour, as well as making laps around Rlttenhouse Square. An avid rock and roller, he owns nearly 1000 albums, with current favorites being the Bongos, Richard Thompson and the Del Puegos. Dr. Eisenstaedt stands as a role model for physicians in training. He has a multi-dimensional life; is intelligent, but not ego-centric; and is self-confident, without being belittling. When Dr. Richard Eisenstaedt first appeared In Kresge A to lead a clinical correlation in biochemistry, he immediately showed those qualities which have endeared him to our class. When we were hungry for the clinical realities of that abstract science. Dr. Eisenstaedt provided us with an example of an ideal physician, lie combined intelligence and a broad knowledge of medicine with compassion, grace and humility. He further demonstrated these traits on the floors, where he was accessible to both students and patients. Mo question was ever viewed in a negative manner, but encouraged and answered with thoughtfulness and enthusiasm. Dr. Eisenstaedt was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. The son of a pathologist, he has known since the age of 4 that he wanted to be a physician. As a child he would often accompany his father to the lab, where he showed his budding scientific interest by writing his own autopsy reports. He remained focused on medicine through his undergraduate education at the University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated with honors. He attended the University of Illinois, Abraham Lincoln School of Medicine where he was elected to AOA. He trained at Tufts Mew England Medical Center Hospital for his internship, residency, and fellowship In Hematology and served as Chief Resident. 8
