! i i TEMPLE UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE 1987 SKULL 1 From the Historians Dc3r fellow patients, SKULL 87 STAFF We've made it. Through four years of a prolonged medical admission at Temple University Medical School our minds have gone from mere regurgitation devices to skilled, synthesizing, thinking machines — or so we hope. The EDITOR-IN-CHIEF yearbook staff has attempted to document our hospital stay with the most j en Chavin complete record possible. This record would not have been possible had it not been for extraordinary history-taking and exhaustive physical diagnostic testing. Every class member deserves thanks for providing us with an accurate personal MfirP to fill their own senior page. Special kudos are extended to those who provided especially creative layouts, and to those who managed to submit them on time. A patient’s chart would remain relatively empty without the gathering of consultants. Our gatherings were extensive, and some individuals require recognition: Andy — for his undying patience. Kick — for his everpresent humor, Lisa — for her everpresent husband. Naomi — for her versatility, Nancy — for the seniors, Dave — for his level head, Scott — for his shuttering abilities, llene. Diane Pam — for their perseverance, Robin — for her fast fingers, and Bruce — for starting as creative input and ending up with no dead space. We owe a great debt to Nadine and Jeff, whose patience and openmindedness allowed the invasion of the mob and virtually total disruption of their lives over more than a month. Bill and Harry were life-savers with periodic glucose surges provided at the revolving doors of Independence Place. We made our presence known early, and over four years have contributed to significant improvements in medical education at Temple. This yearbook, unlike any other patient s chart, has explored, uncovered, and hopefully captured that which is most important to the class of 1987. As we embark on our medical careers and travel down whatever paths we choose, the chart assemblers wish you joy and fond remembrance upon reviewing your old records. Richard S. Eisenstaedt, M.D. In August of 1983 a group of hard-working, intelligent young men and women gathered for the first time. Older than most entering medical school classes, the class of 1987 would bring many outside experiences to their medical education. The diversity within the class would become apparent early In their medical training, due in part to their strength of character and vocal nature. As the years passed, respect and understanding grew, unifying the class by allowing the diverse qualities of its individuals to remain strong. Appearances would have us believe that the class of '87 could not decide between preclinical or clinical influences, or that we were unable to unite on whether academia or community medicine offered the most valuable examples on which to focus. Appearances can be. and often are. deceiving. When the class of 1987 was faced with the decision of choosing a faculty member who best represented the values of the class, it seemed only natural that we. the class of 1987, were unable to select one person. Two physicians. Dr. Todd Sagin and Dr. Richard Eisenstaedt, stand out as role models for the class of 1987. Tor them, critical thought is essential for development of a competent physician. A skilled teacher requires critical thinking from his students, by constant probing, seeking the best that his students can offer. Both Dr. Sagin and Dr. Eisenstaedt will be long remembered for their skillful questioning. Having experienced life outside the classroom, the class of 1987 has an understanding of the difficulties the physician s life can bring. Balancing life in the hospital, office and at home can be a trying, oftimes impossible task. Drs. Sagin and Eisenstaedt have managed to reconcile these concerns without having to sacrifice quality along the way. Many physicians in our experience have portrayed the aforementioned qualities. To the class of 1987 Drs. Sagin and Eisenstaedt exemplify that which we value most — respect and concern for one's fellow man. Both are consummate professionals, but their depth of feeling for their work and their patients is readily apparent to all they have contacted, for their concern, support and caring, we honor Dr. Todd Sagin and Dr. Richard Eisenstaedt with our yearbook. 5 Our first year of medical school presented us with many challenges, both to our intellects and emotions. As Director of Introduction to Primary Care course. Dr. Sagin offered us stimulating, provocative discussions of medical, personal and ethical issues. At a time in our lives when wc were overwhelmed by the sheer number of facts presented to us, he gave us insight into the problems we were confronting and provided us with a reminder that medicine is intended to treat the spirit as well as the body. His involvement in activities increased during his undergraduate years at the University of Rochester. Combining the burden of a large course load with an active extracurricular life, he developed a skill for juggling many projects at once. He graduated with a BA in English and Psychology in 1978 and then attended medical school at the University of Pittsburgh. Upon graduation, he furthered his medical career with a demanding but rewarding year at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. After spending another year pursuing goals outside of medicine in Chicago and Alaska, he returned to the Philadelphia area to complete his residency in Family Practice at Chestnut Hill Hospital. Dr. Sagin is a native of Springfield Township, outside of Philadelphia. During his formative years he enjoyed involvement with political and social organizations and relaxed by playing the piano, clarinet and guitar, though not all at once. 6 Dr. Sagin first came to Temple to undertake a fellowship in faculty Development for family practitioners, and to work toward a masters degree In Public health. In 1983 he accepted a last minute assignment to direct the Primary Care course for the incoming freshmen at the School of Medicine. To Dr. Sagin. this became the year's most rewarding endeavor. he has followed up his interest in teaching and faculty development as Associate Director of the Family Practice Residency Program at Abington Memorial hospital. As he continues juggling activities. Dr. Sagin graduates from Temple Law School in June. Dr. Sagin emphasizes the importance of the time he spends with his family. he married his high school sweetheart. Wendy, and participated in the delivery of their two children, five-year-old Alana and three-year-old Aaron. Family time is often enjoyed through hiking, backpacking, and camping. Dr. Sagin's special interests in medicine include public health law. medical malpractice and health care distribution. These fields are recognized as among the most rapidly changing in medicine and areas of great concern and interest to us all. .As we graduate Temple to begin our new careers. Dr. Sagin leaves us with this farewell message: Medicine is a field with vast opportunity and limitless potential. The real challenge is not how to make an economic living but how to make medicine satisfying and rewarding, and to contribute to its development. Dr. Sagin's insight, support and encouragement will provide continuous inspiration to us as we pursue our goals In medicine. 7 When Dr. Richard Eisenstaedt first appeared In Kresge A to lead a clinical correlation in biochemistry, he immediately showed those qualities which have endeared him to our class. When we were hungry for the clinical realities of that abstract science. Dr. Eisenstaedt provided us with an example of an ideal physician, lie combined intelligence and a broad knowledge of medicine with compassion, grace and humility. He further demonstrated these traits on the floors, where he was accessible to both students and patients. Mo question was ever viewed in a negative manner, but encouraged and answered with thoughtfulness and enthusiasm. Dr. Eisenstaedt was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. The son of a pathologist, he has known since the age of 4 that he wanted to be a physician. As a child he would often accompany his father to the lab, where he showed his budding scientific interest by writing his own autopsy reports. He remained focused on medicine through his undergraduate education at the University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated with honors. He attended the University of Illinois, Abraham Lincoln School of Medicine where he was elected to AOA. He trained at Tufts Mew England Medical Center Hospital for his internship, residency, and fellowship In Hematology and served as Chief Resident. 8 In 1978 he became Director of the Blood Bank at Temple University Hospital. His duties have since expanded to include Deputy Director for Clinical Affairs and Oncology in the Section of Hematology Oncology and advancement to the rank of Associate Professor. Dr. Eisenstaedt has involved himself in the Temple community, serving on the Admissions Committee, the Faculty Senate Steering Committee, and the Medical Residency Selection and Advisory-Committees. Ills interest in medical education has continued to grow as demonstrated by his planning and participating in the alternative Hematology course. His skill as a medical educator has been appreciated and recognized by the student body. In 1984 he received the Golden Apple Award for distinguished teaching and In 1987 the Russel P. Moses Award for excellence in clinical teaching. Dr. Eisenstaedt's life is more than medicine. Recently married. his wife Haney, a Bostonian by accent and birth, operates a cooking school. A dedicated runner, he has been seen running down Broad Street at rush hour, as well as making laps around Rlttenhouse Square. An avid rock and roller, he owns nearly 1000 albums, with current favorites being the Bongos, Richard Thompson and the Del Puegos. Dr. Eisenstaedt stands as a role model for physicians in training. He has a multi-dimensional life; is intelligent, but not ego-centric; and is self-confident, without being belittling. If we can grow to be physicians In his mold, we will be doing a service to our profession, our patients, and our families. 9 Carson Schneck. M.D.. Ph.D. Joseph Baum.
