It has become a tradition each year to dedicate the yearbook to someone whose gifts in a special way have influenced this year's graduating class. This year, the Class of 1983 of Temple University's School of Medicine is pleased to dedicate Skull ’83 to Concetta Harakal. Ph.D. She is not only a teacher and researcher of high academic standards but a humanist, commited to people and especially to students. She was born in Colledimacine, in the Province of Chieti of the Abbruzzi region of Italy and emigrated at the age of eight with her family to Philadelphia. She grew up in Philadelphia receiving her A.B. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1945, her M.S. from Temple University in 1950 and her Ph.D. in Pharmacology from Temple in 1962. She began as an instructor in Pharmacology at Temple in 1957 and eventually became a full professor in 1976. Some of her major research areas involve cardiovascular pharmacology, vascular smooth muscle pharmacology, and hypertension with over sixty publications at present. For many of us our interactions with Dr. Harakal extend beyond the classroom. Some of us first met her as nervous medical school applicants during the interview process - she has served as a member of the Admissions Committee since 1978. For others, she became a sophomore year advisor always willing to discuss academic or personal problems. Even as a lecturer she extended beyond the podium, doing whatever she could to clarify the material she presented. Her excellence in teaching has not gone unrecognized by others. She has received three Golden Apple Teaching Awards, the Chapel of the Four Chaplains Legion of Honor Award, the Sowell Memorial Award for Excellence in Basic Science Teaching, and the Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching. Dr. Harakal is a dedicated teacher, a committed researcher, and a devoted wife - in essence a special person and we are truly proud to dedicate Skull '83 to her. 5 The Class of 1983

T he Class of 1983 (Harolds Story) This is Harold, a member of a rather unique graduating class. Even though he never attended one lecture, or examined a patient, or spent a night on call, he has been a little part of each of us for the past four years. In fact, you might say, all together our class made up Harold. This is his story.
